The Future Of Digital Cameras

Globe Technology recently ran an article examining the future of cameras. Digital cameras are smart but wait and see what’s coming…

You’re taking a picture of grandma and the kids, so the camera chooses the appropriate shutter speed, makes detailed color and lighting adjustments, and warns you that you’re cutting off the top of grandma’s head. You press the button, but the kids aren’t smiling — so the camera waits until they are to take the picture.


And what’s in the picture for the near future?

At a recent exhibition in New York, Canon showed cameras that spot human faces and analyze their expressions. One prototype waited until all subjects in a portrait were smiling before taking the picture. Another detected blinking. These won’t be commercial products for at least a year, says Neil Stephenson, technical marketing manager at Canon Canada Inc. in Mississauga, but they’re features expected to be aimed at the mass market.
