TrustedReviews - 28 December’07 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and feels the cameras only achilles heel is its image quality. Here’s a summation from their conclusion -
“If you look at camera build quality and specs then you come to the conclusion its price is reasonable. It may not be the prettiest but what it lacks in outward appearance it more than makes up for in effective image stabilization, very fast continuous shooting, and really good low light capability. Compared to other contenders in its class it’s so so and would be great for general picture taking. But its overall image quality was sadly disappointing. “

DPReview - 12 October’07 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and notes the that indoors while using flash the auto focus assist light is a little too bright. Here’s an excerpt from their conclusion -
“So then, the W80 is a camera that is capable of producing surprisingly good results in good light at ISO 100 and is perfectly usable at ISO 400-800 in low light if you don’t want big prints (the church interiors in the samples gallery, for example, are better than I expected), but a camera that falls down in what I consider to be one of the most important areas for a camera such as this; pictures of people indoors in low light - with or without flash. If you’re after a ‘walk around’ camera for scenery then it’s not a bad buy for $200-ish, but if you actually have friends and family, and are still awake taking pictures after sunset it’s hard to wholeheartedly recommend it when there are so many better alternatives out there.”

Imaging-Resource - 25 September’07 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and writes;
“It’s hard to call the Sony W80 the bottom rung in the W-Series because it only gives up a few pixels for a lower price. Otherwise the Sony W80 has all the bells and whistles, making it a terrific bargain. It has a Bionz processor, face detection technology, High ISO, Super SteadyShot, in-camera editing, and HD output signal. The Sony W80 does give away detail to hold onto color at higher ISO settings, but most users won’t mind that tradeoff, particularly if you only plan to make 4×6 prints. The color that the Sony W80 holds at ISO 1,600 is pretty good. HD output — particularly when played as a slide show with the built-in special effects and music — was stunning on the Sony W80, but only for stills.”

DigitalCameraReview - 17 September’07 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and writes;
“The W80 should be just another pretty face in the seven megapixel compact digicam crowd, but where it really counts - the ability to capture super images easily and consistently, the W80 delivers in spades. Bottom line if you’re looking for a compact P&S seven megapixel digicam the W80 is worthy of your consideration.”

Popular Science Magazine - 7/16/2007 - has reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and writes, “Although the best at face tracking, the W80’s image quality across all shooting scenarios fell short of the Fujifilm’s. The Sony located faces almost instantly and held onto them, even as people walked toward the camera. Along with improving focus, the camera’s face detection often yielded better exposure and color balance. But the feature is available in just two modes: fully automatic and portrait. Plus, photos at higher light-sensitivity settings (above ISO 200) showed considerable graininess and less detail.”

DC Resource - 5/26/2007 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and writes, “In a market already oversaturated with ultra-compact cameras, coming out on top requires a pretty solid product. While the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 has quite a few things going for it (such as image stabilization and robust performance), the negatives outweigh the positives, so it’s hard for me to recommend this camera. It’s not a bad camera, it’s just that there are better options out there for your hard-earned money.”

Good Gear Guide - 5/16/2007 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and write, “A solid compact camera that combines speedy operation with above average image quality. If you’re making enlargements the over sharpening may become an issue, but otherwise this is a good choice if you’re after an all purpose model.”

Cameras.co.uk - 5/16/2007 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and write, “The Sony DSC W80 is a mid priced, pocket sized digital camera. It performs well in most situations. I was also impressed by the speed of the camera when taking a photo. In fact when it comes to shutter lag it is the fastest camera I have tested for a long time.”

CNET - 4/2/2007 - reviews the 7.2 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and writes, “The good: Attractive new display; great performance and pictures.

The bad: Small buttons can sometimes feel awkward.

The bottom line: With a shiny new interface, fast performance, and great pictures, the DSC-W80 sits on the top of the budget snapshot heap.”
