Cameras.co.uk - 19 February’08 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and was impressed by its overall performance. Here’s a summary of their review -
“As far as super zooms go the H7 is definitely on the short list worth considering cameras. Image quality does display a little purple fringing but no more than its competitors. Colors are strong and vivid with ISO performance remaining impressive up to 400 However, at ISO 1600 most image quality has disappeared, as would be expected… Bottom line - with a huge array of features this camera is still easy to use and produces great looking pictures.”

CNET - 17 January’08 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and notes it has lots of manual and automatic features. Here’s a summary of their review -
“This camera shines primarily when used outdoors and in open daylight, in other words, photos look best under the right circumstances. In fact, the review takes it another step by indicating pictures look best shot at ISO 100 in bright sunlight. Looks to me like the CNET review was real thrilled with the H7’s image quality. In addition they noticed the lens displayed a little distortion, chromatic aberration on the edges of the photo and purple fringing on high-contrast edges.”

Well I guess that pretty much sums up how they feel about the H7’s images quality. Under the right situation, it’s good. Other than that it sucks. Yet, with so many negatives slammed at the camera CNET still chose to award it a 7 out of 10…

Steve’s Digicams - 25 September’07 - reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and writes;
“Once again, Sony has a very capable entry into the mega-zoom digicam market with the DSC-H7. Offering an 8 megapixel imaging sensor, a 15x image stabilized optical zoom and a slew of manual and automatic features, the H7 is a very versatile package that delivers excellent image quality. This is a great choice for someone trying to decide between a smaller digicam or a dSLR. With the ability of this camera to use the 15x optical zoom with image stabilization, and optional smart zoom (not available on a dSLR), this camera is thousands of dollars cheaper than the equivalent options on a dSLR and image stabilized lenses.”

DP Review - 7/13/2007 - has reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and writes, “If you want a genuinely affordable big zoom camera for snapping the family that you can leave on ‘full auto’ all the time - and you rarely print your pictures bigger than 6×4 inches - the H7 is (at as little as $350 online) certainly worth a closer look.

But if you’ve got more exacting image quality standards, want to enlarge more or want to actually use all those advanced features I suspect that, like us, you’re going to find the H7 disappointing. At least the H9 has a great screen to take your mind off the fiddly controls and less-than-stellar results; the H7 is what it is - a budget model that, unfortunately, performs like one.”

Digital Camera Review - 7/3/2007 - has reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and writes, “The H7 achieves what I believe its designers set out to achieve, that is namely, create a point and shoot camera with a massive zoom. The H7 is not a camera to get if you plan on delving into photography or plan on adjusting settings with any ease. However, if you want something you can just pick up, take great photos with (some of the time) and you appreciate the versatility that a 31-465mm lens gives you, then the H7 is the camera for you. Its video features are also outstanding, especially the ability to zoom during recording and the 640×480 @ 30fps. I was impressed with the H7’s shooting modes and the quality of pictures they turned out with surprisingly little effort.

I enjoyed using this camera, especially the power the 15x zoom gave me but as I mentioned earlier its bloated menu, lack of dedicated buttons (perhaps a benefit to some), and inability to change settings rapidly left me craving my DSLR.”

Digital Camera Info - 6/11/2007 - has reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 and writes, “The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 is yet another addition to the ultra-zoom market. This SLR-shaped digital camera comes with a solid set of exposure modes and an interface more reminiscent of compact models than SLRs. Many of the exposure modes and features are the same as the Sony H9, which costs almost a hundred dollars more. The H9 throws in a much better LCD screen and infrared technology for photographing wildlife at night, but if consumers can do without those things then they will be perfectly happy with the H7. The 8.1-megapixel Cyber-shot H7 has a lot of great features: a 15x optical zoom lens with image stabilization, an impressive 2.2 fps burst mode that snaps up to 100 shots, high definition output for musical slide shows and videos, and even trendy face recognition technology that works quickly and effectively.”
