T3 reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 and writes;
“That leaves as the main USP the fact that if you ignore the MP3 player and just use the 2GB memory for photos, you’ve got room for a whopping 600 shots. The problem is that even with that in mind, the fiddly side controls, slow start and average features won’t justify the high price to most of us..”

CNET reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 and writes;
“The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 seems like an awkward convergence device from two years ago, or from a time when putting MP3 players in cameras was all the rage. I wish Sony had opted instead to create the more market-worthy Wi-Fi contender we’ve been waiting for. Given the high price for what it offers–huge LCD notwithstanding, there’s really nothing else worth paying a premium for–I have to suggest that you give this one a pass. Get yourself a really nice MP3 player and a top-notch ultracompact instead.”

Good Gear Guide - 7/18/2007 - reviews the Cyber-shot DSC-G1 and writes, “It isn’t helped by the controls, which could be arranged better. There is a thumb stick on the right hand side, along with the main menu and navigation keys. More controls are revealed by sliding the unit into photography mode; things such as the flash, playback and timer buttons. We understand why the controls are configured in such a fashion, allowing you to use the music player without opening the lens, however the orientation of the thumb stick makes it quite difficult to use, and we’d really have preferred if the navigation controls were flat on the back of the unit, as with the majority of other cameras. This isn’t a big gripe, but does slow the process of navigation down even further.”

Photography Blog - 7/16/2007 - has reviewed the Cyber-shot DSC-G1 and writes, “The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G1 is a brave but ultimately flawed attempt to combine a camera, music player, image viewer, wi-fi and storage device into one product. It undoubtedly has the best LCD monitor ever seen on a digital camera, perfect for showing off your photos to friends and family. Hopefully more companies will follow suit and increase both the size and more importantly the resolution of their cameras’ screens. The 2Gb of built-in storage sounds great as a headline specification, but doesn’t really add up in practice. Sure, you can store up to 600 images on the camera, but with rapidly falling memory card prices, it makes much more financial sense to store your pictures in this way than pay the (massive) premium that the G1 demands.”

Digital Camera Info - 5/20/2007 - has a first impressions review of the Cyber-shot DSC-G1 and writes, “The G1 is an intriguing camera with a lot of things on its side. For one, there is the excellent screen; it is high resolution, bright and has a great viewing angle for showing your photos to the world. If you’re a proud parent looking to show your newborn to friends and family, it will show off the apple of your eye at maximum cuteness. And the unusual design is surprisingly effective; the G1 is easy to operate and closes into to a convenient package. But it’s not a compact camera since it won’t fit into a shirt pocket or small handbag.”

Unbeatable.co.uk - 5/3/2007 - reviews the 6.0 megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-G1 and writes, “The Sony G1 is a smart looking camera that is packed with features but for this price we would have liked to have seen a much higher mega-pixel count, especially as Sony have just announced the launch of a 12 mega-pixel compact camera.”

CNET Asia - 5/3/2007 - has reviewed the 6.0 megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-G1 likes the Wi-Fi connectivity. They continue to write, “For a test of its image quality, we took the G1 out. The auto white balance did a good job; even in a tungsten-lit environment, it did fairly well, although, it’s a bit of a stinker that the G1 does not have manual white balance settings. We detected minimal purple fringing and a funny tendency for the story to enhance the green part of the color spectrum.”
