“My gripe with it is that it lacks basic features such as shutter-priority, a zoom and fast focus. The lens is noisy and I find these drawbacks a real shame because I still really like the camera. I just know that I wouldn’t be able to live with the noise and slow performance.”

TrustedReviews
“The Ricoh GR Digital II is a unique and ambitious camera. Despite its lack of a zoom lens it offers a level of versatility higher than almost any other pocket-sized compact camera on the market. Handling, performance and build quality are all of a very high standard, and image quality is excellent at low ISO settings.”

PhotographyBlog has reviewed the Ricoh GR Digital II and they write -
“There are a few downsides to consider, principally the level of noise at ISO 400 and faster, and the high price. Ricoh have always chosen the route of “less reduction, more noise”, maintaining image detail but displaying more artifacts at slower ISO speeds than some of their competitors. Consequently images are noisy both onscreen and in prints at ISO 400 and faster, although you can turn on the in-camera noise reduction at the expense of fine detail.”

CNET has reviewed the Ricoh GR Digital II and they write -
“Sony’s top T-series models and Canon’s most expensive compact models tend to deliver sharper images and don’t nearly cost as much as this Ricoh. Of course, they don’t have manual exposure controls, and the ones on this Ricoh are quite nice. They also don’t have hot shoes, though I can’t imagine how unwieldy the Ricoh would be with a hot-shoe flash on top of it.”

StevesDigicams - 18 March’08 - reviews the Ricoh GR Digital II and warns this not your typical digital camera. Here’s a summary of their review -
“Because of all the additional controls this camera is definitely designed for the more advanced photographer. Image quality and performance are first rate but the price tag is a little on the stiff side. Looking at image quality a little closer the exposure and saturation are outstanding, and the color is very crisp and vivid. ISO performance below 400 was beautiful and even at 800 prints in the 4 x 6 range looked good.”

ThinkCamera - 03 March’08 - reviews the Ricoh GR Digital II and feels this is a highly specialized camera. Here’s a summary of their review -
“Here’s an “old school” style of camera that’ll appeal to a select crowd. It does however have a few chinks in its armor namely its focusing is a little noisy and its high ISO images could be cleaner. The camera clearly is targeted for folks who are looking for DSLR manual type controls but prefer a compact camera. Bottom Line - Huge feature set, great design and ok images.”

DCResource - 22 February’08 - reviews the Ricoh GR Digital II and notes it does not take better pictures than cheaper cameras. Here’s a summary of their review -
“This is a gimmick free camera. Performance was in the unremarkable range with slow startup and shot-to-shot speeds. Pictures straight out of the camera tend to be soft, Ricoh tends to be conservative on in camera sharpening. Although the camera has some nice features including RAW capture it’s just too darn expensive.”

PhotoReview - 14 January’08 - reviews the Ricoh GR Digital II and likes the new “Skew” mode setting that can help straighten vertical lines. Here’s a summary of their review -
“Image saturation is really kept in control unlike a lot of other cameras on the market and skin tones looked particularly good. The GR performance wise was slightly faster than its competitors with fast startup and shot to shot very fast. Image quality was good and digial noise did not create a problem until around ISO 800.”

LetsGoDigital - 05 December’07 - reviews the Ricoh GR Digital II and indicates this is a camera that does not stand out to the crowd but does to the expert. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“t first sight not much seems to have changed but when you put some more time into this new model you will soon find out that some tenth of improvements and renewals have been applied. Bottlenecks from its predecessor, like a too long processing time for RAW images, have been dealt with and improved on the Ricoh GR Digital II.”

Actual Owner Feedback

“This is a very nice camera, with a ton of little tweaks that show Ricoh has again listened to users. But the image quality is virtually identical to the previous model so it’s hard to justify the price. “

“I’ve been using the Ricoh GR II for a little over two weeks now and I must say that it is an excellent camera. For me the primary thing that I needed was a pocket camera with a fast wide-angle lens, easy to use manual controls (shutter speed, ISO, f-Stop, etc.) that can shoot in low light and in the RAW format.”

“…unless you know what you are buying, and you are sure that it’s what you want.”

“I really wanted to love this camera–even like it–but the image quality just isn’t there. Ricoh: please, please figure this out!”
