Photo Review

Luminous-Landscape – 26 March’08 – reviews the Ricoh GX100 and thinks there’s a lot to like about this camera. Here’s a summary of their review -
“What keeps the camera from receiving 5 out of 5 stars was the digital noise present in lower ISO settings and too small a buffer for holding RAW images. The lens on this camera is simply outstanding with almost no aberration. Sharpness and resolution were so good the reviewer indicates he has not seen its equal from any pocket camera’s optical system.”
OutbackPhoto – 20 March’08 – reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and felt the LCD screen was smaller than on most DSLRs. Here’s a summary of their review -
“This is really a fun camera to use. However, there were few negatives such as a really slow write time when shooting RAW and you always are capturing JPEGs and RAW which really burns through a memory card. ISO performance was acceptable up to 800 where overall quality degraded. Overall it’s well engineered camera with a nice wide angle coverage.”
CNET Asia – 11 February’08 – reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and thought it had poor dynamic range. Here’s a summary of their review -
“If you are into low light and night photography this cameras CCD shift optical image stabilization system just might be for you. just be forewarned that if the situation requires high ISO settings then be prepared for digital noise. A couple of negative review points were the cameras no very attractive and it tends to be a pretty slow at focussing.”
TrustedReviews – 09 February’08 – reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and felt there were many things that make this an above average camera. Here’s a summary of their review -
“For starters this camera is all abut control, as in, lots of it. More experienced photographers will probably love the GX100. It’s performance is outstanding and it’s only drawback is its picture quality which is not perfect, but that being said it’ll would meet the needs of most people. A much appreciate RAW mode adds even another layer of control. Add it all up and you have a really cool camera all except for the price… which the reviewer thinks will get in the way of a lot of people buying it.”

ThinkCamera – 05 October’07 – reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and thought it had excellent camera control and a very fast operating shutter. Here’s their verdict;
“Coupled with an excellent lens, very good white balance control and a wide usable sensitivity range, this makes the Ricoh Caplio GX100 closer to a 21st Century Leica than just another compact. It’s not perfect, of course; the flash has a tendency to try too hard and randomly deliver full power flash when it should be acting as fill-in flash. But when it works, it works well.”
Good Gear Guide reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and writes;
“The camera is relatively easy to use thanks to the brilliant control layout. While Ricoh certainly has included a lot of buttons on the GX100, everything is where you’d expect it and experienced photographers will find that when they pick the unit up their fingers naturally fall in all the right places. The only exception is the zoom controls, which are stuck in the very top right hand corner and require you to alter your grip to use them properly.”
DPReview reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and feels the GX100 is not as good of a camera as it thinks it is (Which by the way I think is a really strange comment.). They indicate the camera on paper looks like a thoroughbred with all the right features. However they were disappointed in a noisy sensor and as they call it, “questionable operation.” .

Bottom Line: According to DPReview this is a camera that is intended for someone with a lot of photographic experience because they’ll need it to overcome the GX100s limitations.

LetsGoDigital reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and as the reviewer noted it has everything he was looking for in a compact camera. An honest to goodness wide-angle lens, support for RAW, image stabilization and great image resolution. He likes the camera so much that it became his standard travel camera. The one you wan to pack around on bicycle trips and strolls through the park. Hi only complaint is that he chose RAW as his shooting format and in doing so the camera takes a long time to process each and every shot.

Bottom Line: Exemplary operation, sold build quality, and true wide-angle to telephoto makes this a worthy point-and-shoot digital camera.

DPExpert reviews the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and likes the sensor shift image stabilization because it provides rock solid images. Plus the camera at it widest angle displays very little barrel distortion. About the only thing the reviewer did not like was the slow write times to the memory card. The GX100’s RAW files weigh in at 14.4MB so if you factor in how long it takes to write to the SD card and it would probably be enough to keep most people from shooting RAW.

Bottom Line: This camera is a number one recommendation for travelers. Reviewers parting suggestion – make sure and buy the viewfinder.

CNET.co.uk – 7/19/2007 – has reviewed the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and writes, “Ricoh’s rewards for ploughing its own photographic furrow are inevitably mixed. On the plus side, the superb lens is one of the most flexible around — giving great wide-angle performance, true macro close-ups and easy manual exposure. The flash unit is wonderful and the interface, once you get used to it, will make it hard to go back to traditional, time-consuming menus.

In some respects, however, the GX100 does feel outdated. The autofocus system lacks sophistication and speed, image stabilisation is primitive and the price reflects last year’s benchmarks rather than today’s bargains.

Ultimately, what saves the GX100 from being merely an interesting irrelevance in the era of sub-£400 digital SLRs is its solid 10-megapixel image quality, its convenience and size, and that fascinating wide-angle lens.”
ePhotozine – 7/12/2007 – has reviewed the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and writes, “The GX100 is a great camera and more suited to someone with a small business or a keen amateur who needs a wide angle compact with the features of an SLR. The picture quality is good and the build quality is superb. I don’t like the viewfinder being an optional accessory and their are other viewfinders available that will work on the GX100 so why not let the owner use a genuine Ricoh part as standard? I think it is down to money.”
Popular Photography – 7/5/2007 – has tested the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and writes, “The GX100 is a highly competent camera that’s easy and fun for both the casual shooter and the serious enthusiast to use. We like it. But we’d like it more if it cost a little less and had less noise at high ISOs.”
PhotographyBlog – 6/20/2007 – has tested the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and writes, “So overall, if you can live with the noisy ISO 400 setting and high price, the Ricoh GX100 is one of the best compact cameras yet for the discerning shutterbug. A real joy to use, quick to respond and offering a veritable treasure trove of advanced features, the GX100 definitely comes highly recommended.”
Photo Review – 6/20/2007 – has tested the Ricoh Caplio GX100 and writes, “Photographers who are looking for a capable, full-featured digicam with good performance plus a high degree of user adjustability will find the Caplio GX100 meets many of their needs. It’s a pity Ricoh didn’t use a larger sensor chip and we don’t feel it necessary to compromise performance in pursuit of ever higher sensitivity ratings. That said, however, the GX100 is the nicest camera to take pictures with of the pocketable digicams we’ve tested in the past half-year and would be a good choice for situations where you don’t want to carry a bulky DSLR.”
