Geo Informatics - 7/12/2007 - has reviewed the Ricoh Caplio 500G wide and they write, “Due to its robustness and Bluetooth communication ability, which is a pro in day-to-day surveying, the price of the Ricoh is steep when compared to other, equivalent, digital cameras. Some aspects of the camera were slightly disappointing but overall the camera can be a good addition to a GIS surveyor’s equipment. What would truly improve the usability of the camera is the inclusion of a small digital compass for heading reference. Alta4 has promised that a clip-on GPS unit with compass will become available in the second quarter of 2007 for a price of around EUR 200.”
Digicam Review - 7/1/2007 - has reviewed the Ricoh Caplio 500G wide and they write, “The camera is very solidly built, as you would expect from such a rugged camera, and will survive water, dust, sand, -10C temperatures, and being dropped. It should be usable even when wearing gloves thanks to the large buttons and good hand grip. If you need something capable of working in poor conditions, and support Bluetooth, wireless and GPS then there is very little else to choose from. Ricoh are one of a few digital camera manufacturers that produce unique digital cameras and they are once again to be commended for this. They are obviously making money by producing unique digital cameras, so it’s surprisingly and disappointing that other companies don’t follow suit, although it’s a shame the price is so high. For the consumer who wants an easy to use point and shoot that will survive a dip in the pool or the sea then the Olympus Mju Stylus 770SW makes much more sense financially, but if you’re requirements are more unique, then the 500SE is a good choice simply because it provides a number of features that no other camera does. If the camera fits your requirements, and the price doesn’t put you off, then the Ricoh Caplio 500SE is recommended.”
GoodGearGuide - 3/21/2007 - has reviewed the 8 megapixel GPS-ready Ricoh 500SE and writes, “There are a few strange design flaws too, such as the lens covering being clearly visible and blocking part of the shot when looking through the viewfinder. We also had an issue with the zoom itself. The 3x zoom 28mm wide angle lens is completely enclosed, ensuring waterproof integrity like the rest of the chassis. However, when trying to reach full zoom extension, the lens would simply zoom back out to the default setting. We could zoom anywhere up to 3x, but as soon as the lens was fully extended it would snap back, and this is very strange to say the least.”
