Shutterbug - 19 December’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and comments this is a surprisiingly durable for such an inexpensive camera. Here’s and excerpt from their review verdict -
“The Pentax K100D Super is a super deal for the new D-SLR photographer. Its rock-bottom price combined with rock-solid performance make it an ideal first SLR for the shooter who’s not already locked into a specific manufacturer’s lens system. For users of Pentax film cameras, it’s a super way to move from analog to digital photography.”
WhatDigitalCamera - 24 November’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and felt the camera was a little too menu dependent. Here’s and excerpt from their review verdict -
“This clearly feels like a stop-gap camera to wring a few extra months of life out of the K100D until a proper replacement comes along, but it’s no less worthy for that. It’s nicely designed, performs well and delivers great results.
There are some negatives of course – the lack of simultaneous Raw+JPEG recording, poor burst performance (making it a bad choice for sports and action), the clumsy menu and the need to use it too often to access key features – but overall this is a good camera at a fair price. Its use of the K-mount lens system, and the millions of old lenses that fit it, make it arguably the best option for photographers looking to build a quality system on a tight budget.”
PopPhoto - 04 November’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and indicates if you’re considering this DSLR it all boils down to price. There are similar priced units that are better cameras. Here’s and excerpt from their review -
“While we’ve criticized the K100D in the past for relegating most controls to the menus, we’ve accepted that such cameras aren’t meant for control freaks like us. With the K100D Super set to Program, it’s a simple pleasure to use — a point-and-shoot with great viewing. The basic controls are accessed easily enough using the function button, and the autofocus finds the subject readily, with little fuss.”
PhotographyBlog - 22 October’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and writes that it’s hard to find fault with the FSLR. Here’s and excerpt from review conclusion -
“Having the arrogance to call your camera ‘Super’ places it justifiably in the firing line for a critical kicking. But having used the camera for more than six weeks, that thought has never entered my head until now. That’s because the Pentax K100D Super ticks very nearly all of the boxes for those wanting an easy to use DSLR that delivers images you’ll want to keep straight out of the camera; and with the minimum of user input and effort to boot. That said, there is enough room to grow built in for those of us who do want to do more than simply point and shoot, and first time DSLR users will have fun experimenting.”
CNET.co.uk - 16 October’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and thought the camera was built solid and delivered great photos. Here’s the review verdict -
“In many ways, the operation and performance of the Pentax K100D Super exceeds expectations, given both its price and ‘mere’ 6-megapixel resolution. For the price, it represents one of the biggest dSLR bargains out there for anyone looking to make the trade up from a compact or swap from a film SLR”
ePhotozine - 27 September’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and offers the following verdict;
“You can’t knock the addition of sensor cleaning and shake reduction technologies, they’re very welcome. With a good build quality, helpful beginner modes and largely easy-to-use controls you have a lightweight, yet solid camera, that’s going to make it easy for the Pentax film upgrader or the newcomer to digital, to gain confidence in the DSLR world. The K100D Super has a better build quality than either the Canon or Nikon entry-level efforts. However, Nikon has progressed the D40 to the D40x and Canon has upgraded the 350D to the 400D, increasing resolutions along the way. This leaves the K100D Super lagging rather far behind at just 6Mp. The question has to be asked, is this enough for what you plan to do with it. If landscape photography is a major interest, where detail and resolution are vital, then really, this isn’t going to be enough for large prints. Otherwise, the K100D Super keeps the Pentax entry-level brand ticking along nicely.”
ComputerActive - 26 September’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and writes;
“Unusually for a budget SLR, it’s possible to keep track of settings using the narrow screen atop the camera in addition to the clear 2.5in screen on the back. Put simply, the Pentax K100D Super is more of a digital camera than you’d expect for the money, and as it can make prints up to A3 size, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it as a first step towards better photographic results.”
DigitalCameraReview - 19 September’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and writes;
“Since my day-to-day cameras are a Pentax K10D and Pentax *ist DL, I was curious how the K100D Super would compare. I expected the camera to perform better than the *ist DL but fall short of the K10D. What I discovered was that the K100D Super is much more like its big brother the K10D than I expected. In short, this is one amazing little camera.
Focus speed of the K100D Super is about the same as the more professional K10D. The 2.7fps continuous shooting performance is great, but the small image buffer of only 5 JPEGs or 3 RAW images severely limits the camera. Image quality is among the best I’ve seen with a 6 megapixel sensor and ISO noise is kept in check thanks to the lower resolution sensor. The full compatibility with every Pentax lens means almost limitless options for expansion and growth of your photographic skills. Colors are rich even at the “natural” image tone setting. In-camera shake reduction and dust removal means that this entry-level camera is remarkably full-featured. Anyone upgrading from a point-and-shoot camera to a DSLR will feel right at home with the auto and scene program modes.
Bottom line, at the entry level price point, the K100D Super is the best value on the market.”
Steve’s Digicams - 18 September’07 - reviews the Pentax K100D Super and writes;
“This lightweight, durable camera was fun to use. While the K100D Super’s 6-megapixel resolution lags behind that of some entry-level models by competing manufacturers, the addition of Shake Reduction (SR) and Dust Removal to a set of mature and useful camera features makes for an attractive consumer dSLR. With the street price hovering around $599 (US) with a 18-55mm zoom lens, the K100D Super is a great value. With a price point that overlaps into consumer digicam territory, the K100D Super offers a compelling choice to point-n-shoot upgraders. Further more, users of Pentax film SLR’s will be tempted to make the jump to digital, with their inventory of K-mount lenses being compatible with the K100D Super AND its integral Shake Reduction feature.”
DPExpert reviews the Pentax K100D Super and writes;
“This is a case of a good camera getting better. The vibration reduction and dust removal are worthwhile improvements to the K100D and well worth the little extra money. No compact or super-zoom pseudo SLR comes within cooee of the quality in this package. Some may fear that 6 megapixels are not enough but the fact is that 6 million well processed pixels will produce high quality A3+ prints – do you need more? Highly recommended.”
