Reviewers Conclusions & Verdicts – (updated 29 November ‘07)

PhotoReview – 29 November’07 – reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and commented the test pictures had wider dynamic range than most cameras in this class. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The FX100 is a great little slimline camera for point-and-shoot photographers but serious enthusiasts will find it somewhat limited. Panasonic has extracted excellent performance from the 12-megapixel imager and image processing system. Image quality is as good as we’ve seen from any compact 12-megapixel digicam and noise is very well controlled up to (and including) ISO 400.”

TrustedReviews – 16 November’07 – reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and notes these are some of the best quality pictures from any camera all except for the noise problem. Here’s an excerpt from their review verdict -
“The Panasonic Lumix FX100 is a difficult camera. While it has excellent build quality, good performance and an exceptionally fine lens, its usefulness is limited by image noise problems. As it is it is hard to recommend it over the slightly cheaper FX33 (or even the FX55), which has a very similar range of features, better image quality and a lower price.”

Rating: ½½½½½
PCWorld – 15 November’07 – reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and comments the camera is a little on the pricey side. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“Though the DMC-FX100 has a higher pixel count than its sibling, the image quality of its pictures was about the same in our lab tests. Color accuracy and exposure accuracy were about average for recently tested point-and-shoots–good, but not outstanding. But in image sharpness, the DMC-FX100 earned the second-highest score among recently reviewed compact cameras.”

Rating: ½½½½½
Cameras.co.uk – 19 October’07 – reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and likes the uncomplicated simple to use design. Here’s an expert from their review -
“The Panasonic DMC FX100 is well worth taking a close look at if you are interested in a tidy, compact digital camera that takes a good photo. It is an unfussy camera and scores highly for ease of use. It has one or two extra features you do not always find on a simple point and shoot cameras.”

Rating: ½½½½½
Macworld – 15 October’07 – reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and appreciated the camera is easy to control even for new users. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“The camera’s menus and controls are well thought out, with most important settings just a click or two away. Travelers will also appreciate the compact battery recharger, which you’ll be using given the decidedly average battery life of 530 shots per charge.”

DCResource – 19 September’07 – reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and writes;
“Photo quality was very good, as long as you keep the ISO sensitivity low. The FX100 took well-exposed pictures, with pleasing colors and minimal purple fringing. Images aren’t really noisy, but they do suffer from noise reduction artifacting, especially as the ISO passes 400. This smudges fine details, make your images look more like watercolor paintings than photographs. This is not a camera for those who like taking high ISO shots! The upside is that noise isn’t really a problem, since the camera is working so hard at reducing it. There’s also quite a bit of corner blurring, especially at the wide end of the lens. Like nearly all ultra-compact cameras, the FX100 suffers from a bad redeye problem, and since there’s no redeye removal tool on the camera, you’ll have to fix it on your PC.”

LapTopMag reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and writes;
“The FX100 takes the guesswork out of ISO with its Intelligent ISO Mode, which detects motion and adjusts the sensitivity accordingly. Intelligent ISO gave us a clear, if artificially lit, picture of a friend sitting in a dimly lit room. When we manually adjusted the ISO, we noticed a big drop in quality between ISO 200 and ISO 400. By ISO 400, the wood table and leather chair looked grainy; at ISO 800, our subject’s dark clothing appeared washed out; and at ISO 1600, the maximum setting, the outline of his body against the background looked fuzzy.”

ePhotozine reviews the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and thinks it’s one of Panasonic’s nicest looking cameras. Because of the large 12 megapixel capture the review indicates it’s possible to get some very fine detailed images. And as long as you stay under ISO 400 you can almost be assured of minimal digital noise.

Bottom Line: Lots of resolution and nice 28mm wide angle lens and as long as you stay under the ISO 400 speed limit this is a digital camera that can deliver the goods.

CNET – 7/12/2007 – has reviewed the Panasonic DMC-FX100 and writes, “Considering the usefulness of the 28mm wide-angle lens, the convenience of the Intelligent ISO mode, and the FX100’s impressive white balance and metering, this camera is a good choice if you feel you absolutely must have a 12-megapixel compact camera. However, you probably don’t need so many pixels. If you don’t plan on cropping heavily or making extremely large prints, you’d be better served going for a camera with a lower megapixel count and better noise results.”
