LapTopMag – 24 October’07 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW and comments that to shoot video you’re going to need to dig through the menu selections to find the setting, there’s no single button. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“The Stylus 770 SW starts up quickly (taking about a second), and the time between shots is also short. Another plus: With the digital image stabilizer turned on, we were able to capture cars cruising down Broadway without the blur that usually occurs when shooting fast-moving subjects.”
Macworld – 12 October’07 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW and notes a lot of shots were soft and overexposed. Here’s their buying advice -
“If you plan to do most of your shooting on outdoor adventures and don’t want to schlep around high-end gear, the Olympus Stylus 770 SW will produce adequate snapshots and withstand all kinds of abuse. But if thrill-seeking is only a minor part of your lifestyle, you may want to buy a more capable point-and-shoot camera and encase it in a waterproof housing for the occasional walk on the wild side.”
Crunch Gear tests the Olympus Stylus 770 SW and thinks this is one tough but nice looking camera. Their main complaint is that it does not revert back to last settings used on start-up. This is the type of camera you can take anywhere. The first thing the reviewer did was throw the camera into the swimming pool and let it sit for the first test. Once he retrieved it he took the first a picture and the first image produced after sitting on the bottom of the pool was wonderful.

Good Gear Guide – 7/11/2007 – has reviewed the Olympus Stylus 730 digital camera and they write, “Aesthetically the Tough 770SW isn’t anything to write home about, especially when compared to the other Olympus compacts which are known for their incredibly stylish design. However it’s hard to object considering the features and intended market for the Tough 770SW. It is flat and brick shaped, with a dark blue, metallic face plate and silver edges. All the various openings, such as the battery slot and USB port and covered with rubberised panels to stop water leaking in. The controls are fairly standard, although there is no function wheel, with several buttons scattered around the back of the unit having multiple functions to make up for this.”
PC Magazine – 6/19/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “Most of the shots outside of the water were a letdown, too. I shot several photos of my daughter diving into the pool. Sadly though, most of my images of her came out blurry. Since the camera has no manual controls, I had to rely on other, less direct settings to try to increase the shutter speed, such as switching to a sports mode, or boosting the ISO. None of these methods provided satisfactory results.
What Digital Camera Magazine – 6/14/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “Reviewing and composing images takes place (somewhat slowly) on a vivid 2.5in HyperCrystal LCD, while an extensive 24 scene modes feature, such as underwater macro and underwater snapshot. Shutter priority and manual modes aren’t offered, and are missed, but this is an understandable compromise for a compact camera with fantastic capabilities.”
Digicamera – 5/29/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “Overall, if you’re an outdoors person, snorkeler or diver, we cannot recommend the 770 SW enough. It is significantly tougher than even its impressive specs suggest, and it can do all those stunts while still being an elegant, powerful camera for everyday shooting. And its terrific wide-viewing-angle LCD makes it a pleasure to use.”
Imaging Resource – 5/24/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “This point-and-shoot camera’s rugged body, which is sealed against the elements and capable of withstanding rough handling, is otherwise fairly standard for its class. But the fact that the Olympus 770 SW is water/freeze/crush/shock-proof makes it stand out from the rest. Outdoor enthusiasts may well be able to overlook some of its performance and image quality shortcomings, as well as its basic feature set, knowing that the Olympus Stylus 770 SW can handle whatever physical challenges are thrown its way. Caution when using Digital Image Stabilization, the Available Light Scene mode, and high ISOs should help prevent most image noise, giving snapshooters a way to capture decent — albeit not great — images of their outdoor adventures.”
Digital Camera Info – 5/23/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “The Olympus Stylus 770SW has an impressive set of specs that surpass the older Stylus 720SW. The new camera is just as sturdy with its 5-foot shockproof rating, but can go deeper into the water to 32.8 feet. It reaches a whole new level of ruggedness by withstanding weights of up to 220 pounds and freezing temperatures to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite all this, the 770SW has a ways to go in terms of organization and imaging. The buttons are incredibly small, the movie mode is buried in menus, the auto focus system takes a little too long, and the lens is placed in the way of fingers. The flash rarely looked good in pictures but was hard to avoid using in low light situations, which also impacted the reliability of the auto focus system.”
Photoxels – 5/21/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is easy to use and operate. It is built as tough as it gets, yet succeeds in being elegant as well. It lives up to its claims to be both shock proof as well as waterproof, making it the ideal choice for boaters, campers, hikers, and anyone else who values a digital camera that does not go out of commission at the first bump. The Stylus 770 SW is now also crushproof and winterized, and is hands down the perfect digital camera for travel and hiking to any part of the world. All compact digital cameras should be built this way!”
Zone-Numerique, – 5/20/2007 – a French site reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, (Google Translated) “For underwater photographs or in the swimming pool it would be very sufficient, but it is not the apparatus with which you will make photographs of art nor that which will make shine your travel souvenirs. It is intended for the person who like the water or the beaten paths, or for the people which work on the building sites like the architects.”
Pocket-lint – 5/11/2007 – reviews the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “Olympus is renowned for its weatherproofed compacts and its SW series of digital compacts extend that “proofing†to greater depths and strengths than ever before with the Mju 770SW.
Picture quality is good at the Super High Quality and at lower ISO settings. Ease of use (under “normal†conditions at least) is built-in, but the lack of any real manual control other than +/-2EV exposure compensation means anyone looking for more control might want to steer clear.
However, those of you looking for a rugged, pocketable, yet stylish outdoor camera that can practically (and literally) go (almost) anywhere, then look no further.”
DigitalTrends – 5/1/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “There is no digital camera available like the Olympus Stylus 770SW. None can take the beating this camera can. If you’re an outdoorsy type and are looking for an easy-to-carry camera to take along on your treks, this is the one. Folks who expect to be at the beach and near the surf should consider this one too—the screen really takes the sunlight well and you can drop it in the water and it’ll be fine—as long as you grab it before it hits 33 feet below the surface. Yes, it has its shortcomings—especially the high price–but this 7.1-megapixel survivor is unique.”
ePhotozine – 4/24/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “A hard wearing yet stylishly designed compact, the MJU-770 SW is practical, sturdy and life-proof with a variety of useful features. It’s easy to use and perfect for either beginners or those who want a little more creative control over their photography and those want to experiment with underwater photography.”
PhotoReview – 4/18/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “Outdoor pictures taken with the test camera were bright and contrasty but indoor shots showed a much better dynamic range, reflecting the camera’s underwater capabilities. Imatest showed reproduction of most hues was accurate, except for slight shifts in orange and red. Saturation was relatively low for a digicam. Resolution was slightly below expectations for a 7-megapixel camera and Imatest showed a severe decline at ISO settings over 800.”
Steve’s Digicams – 4/16/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “the Stylus 770 SW is a good digicam for the active user needing a weather resistant/water proof camera, while Olympus claims it is also “Shock Proof” up to 5 feet, we opted not to test this feature. The 770’s 7-megapixel SHQ images have plenty of resolution to create high-quality prints up to 13×19 inches or larger, however we had some issues with the poor position of the lens and the below average results of its VGA movie mode. With an MSRP of $379.99, it offers a good value for a 7-megapixel underwater capable digicam.”
DigiCamReview – 3/12/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “The Olympus Stylus Mju 770SW is a unique digital camera, and would be especially suited to someone who wants to take their camera with them everywhere they go, especially if they’re prone to dropping things, getting things wet, getting things dusty, standing on things, or travelling in freezing conditions. The rugged waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, crushproof and dustproof body and solid build of the digital camera is likely to make the digital camera last much longer than other digital cameras, this makes it excellent value for money compared to less solid digital cameras, and makes it an excellent beach / holiday camera. Image quality was generally good especially outside, although indoors some flash photos seemed slightly under-saturated, and images were slightly soft. Noise was quite well controlled. The camera is very easy to use and there were several features built into the camera to help get better results, such as the digital image stabilization mode, super macro LED illuminator, and numerous scene modes.”
CNET – 3/7/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “Images from the Stylus 770SW weren’t perfect, but that’s not surprising given this camera is built more for extreme durability than optical purity. For example, our test images looked slightly soft overall and had more image artifacts than we’re used to in a camera in this price range, though you can’t jump into a swimming pool and shoot images underwater with those cameras.”
Trusted Reviews – 3/5/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “If you’re looking for a completely indestructible camera to suit your adrenaline-junkie lifestyle, the Olympus mju SW series is still the only game in town, and the 770 SW is the most everything-proof one yet. It’s able to survive anything short of an atomic bomb, but it is slightly lacking in the picture quality department. Still, the fact that it can take any kind of picture at all 10m deep in freezing water while being crushed is remarkable enough.”
DigitalCameraReview – 3/2/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and writes, “The new additions and improvements to the Stylus 770 SW, add a fair amount of value. The better resolution screen is nice and the LED illumination lamp is a very cool and very useful feature. For outdoor enthusiasts and snorkelers, the added rugged features (crush proofing, cold proofing, and better waterproofing) add a lot of value.
Image quality is good outdoors and average indoors. Images showed a lot of detail, but the camera could do a better job of metering and the automatic white balance is not great. The images were sharp and showed good detail. The camera is able to shoot at up to ISO 1600 which enables the digital image stabilization and a theoretically longer flash range. However, you should get a feel for the noise the creeps into the shots at higher ISO so that you can keep it as low as possible and still get the shot that you want.
I also think that the lack of a 30 fps movie mode is also another thing that is holding the Stylus 770 SW back, especially when compared to other waterproof cameras. Personally, it’s not a big issue for me since I don’t take a lot of movie clips, but a lot of people place a lot more significance on it.”
ImagingResource – 1/26/2007 – has created a hands on preview of the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and here are their thoughts, “I’m disappointed to see the continued use of the term Digital Image Stabilization for their High ISO mode, but we can’t change them overnight. I would prefer a mode switch to this button arrangement, because it’s too easy to switch modes with an accidental thumb press; but at least the new buttons make it less likely, as they jut out a little less than the round ones on the Stylus 720 SW.”
DigitalCameraInfo – 1/25/2007 – has been the first to produce a first impressions review of the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Mju 700 SW) and thinks the menus are confusing. They write, “The Olympus Stylus 770SW continues the legacy of the 720SW as being one of the sturdiest digital cameras on the market and even takes the meaning to a whole new level. It can take a drop from 5 ft, swim in depths of 33 ft, get crushed by 220 lbs, and freeze to 14 degrees. It’s like the Hummer of digital cameras – a very small Hummer, of course.
Except this Hummer has the steering wheel on the floor, the speedometer and other gauges in the back seat, and a gas pedal the size of a green bean. The Olympus Stylus 770SW’s menus are confusing; its buttons are tiny, and its components aren’t smartly placed. The interface of the sturdy, compact camera is disappointing.”
