ImagingResource - 12/6/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 740 and writes - “Like its stable mate Stylus 750, the Olympus Stylus 740 has stunningly good looks, but I was disappointed in its performance. Color just seemed unnatural and I came home with far too many blurry images for a camera that has image stabilization. I really wondered if the review unit was just malfunctioning. But it wasn’t a mechanical issue. The thumbnails were very blurred, even when the image itself was not. Our laboratory test shots reveal terrible problems with focus across the frame, so it wasn’t just me. The Olympus Stylus 740 shows some of the worst lens performance we’ve seen in a modern digicam.”

DigicamReview - 12/5/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 740 and writes - “The Olympus Stylus / Mju 740 has a lot going for it, particularly the 5x optical zoom lens and ultra compact weather proof body. The camera would be especially suited to someone who wants to take their camera with them in all weathers. The solid build of this camera is likely to make it last well, and makes it good value for money. Image quality was generally good, although slightly under-saturated for some people’s tastes, and images can be slightly soft. Noise was quite well controlled although worse indoors. The camera is very easy to use and there are a lot of features built in to help get better results, such as the digital image stabilisation and numerous scene modes. The Olympus Mju / Stylus 750 adds an anti-shake CCD sensor to the 740, and is roughly the same price, you get a choice of additional colors (Black and Silver), whether you need additional image stabilization is up to you, but it may well be worth investing in, alternatively you have a greater choice of colors if you stick to the 740. The 740 would make an ideal all weather camera for the style conscious although if image quality is a high priority, then you may want to look elsewhere.”

CNET - 10/6/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 740 and they rate it 6.8 out of 10. They continue to write - “The Stylus 740 is slightly faster than the 750 in shot-to-shot time when the onboard flash is enabled. The 740 registered a 3.3-second flash recycle time, while the 750 took 4.5 seconds to accomplish that feat. Image quality between the two cameras was also similar; both produced very attractive photos with little distortion.”

Olympus Stylus 740 Initial Press Release

London, 23 August 2006 – Photographers who’d like to get a little closer to their subjects should take a good look at the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 from Olympus. Both cameras feature a new 5x optical zoom – great for scrutinising objects a bit further away – and a 7.1 million pixel CCD for photos bursting with detail. Remarkably, this extra zoom power has not affected the size, as both models feature a sleek, ultra-compact design and weatherproof* metal body – trademarks of the µ (mju) series. To make the most of that more powerful zoom, the µ (mju) 750 also boasts another innovation in the Dual Image Stabilization, for the ultimate safeguard against camera shake. As the photo is taken, a mechanical image stabiliser compensates for camera shake by carefully adjusting the position of the 7.1 million pixel CCD. At the same time, a high maximum ISO value gives further protection against blur – a feature also included in the µ (mju) 740. For exceptional shooting in low light or at night, the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 are equipped with BrightCapture Technology, which is now also available in Movie mode.
