Cameras.co.uk – 10 December’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and thought it was a nice camera with good quality but price was a little to high. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“Competition is tough when it comes to pocket sized cameras. The Olympus FE-300 struggles to really stand out from the crowd. If the number of megapixels is important to you then it does offer more pixels than most cameras. Picture quality is good and the camera is easy to use.”
PhotographyBlog – 26 November’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and warns this camera offers reasonable performance it lets you down in the picture quality area. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“Looks like a great deal on paper – almost too good to be true. And so it proves in practice. Though the Olympus FE-300 is commendably easy to use – with that now familiar ‘guide’ function on the mode wheel offering novice users reference to what is, in effect, an in-camera manual that automatically makes function selections for you – and it’s reasonably swift in operation, if not a class leader, the resultant images are what lets it down.”
DigitalCameraReview – 12 November’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and felt the overall picture quality was average for a camera in this class. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The Olympus FE-300 provides a whopping 12 megapixels of resolution, but don’t let the thought that “more is better” enter your mind when deciding about whether to buy this camera. With this camera, all that 12 megapixels gets you is large files and the ability to do a ton of cropping. Now, if you are looking for a quality built, slim, entry level, easy to use camera, then consider this camera, but realize that you’ll get average image quality. There are a lot of good things about the camera – battery life, good macro shots, the built-in guide system, and the styling. You’ll need to balance the good things with the bad – soft details, noisy flash shots, and so on.”
DigitalCameraInfo – 06 November’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and writes that the camera’s white balance is inaccurate and it produces images with poor color. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“After putting the FE-300 to the test, we found the abundance of pixels does help image resolution. In turn, though, it yielded very high noise levels. The noise is so extreme at ISO 1600 that the camera applies severe smoothing, making photos look almost out of focus. The resolution performance has a qualifier; the images are only sharp at the centers. The fact that image quality is good at ISO 50 and 100 hardly makes up for the difficulty you will have at higher ISO speeds or when you want to display a large photo. Additionally, the FE-300 has no full resolution Burst mode and takes longer than four seconds to process one photo.”
Megapixel – 30 October’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and points out that the menu system is a little difficult to navigate. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“To date, the Olympus FE-300 is probably the smallest and most easily carried 12-megapixel compact camera we have seen. The design is nearly free of any protuberances when the camera is turned off, and although it has a metallic shell, the camera is very light.”
Steves-Digicams – 29 October’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and noted the image stabilization uses ISO to control camera shake which results in more digital noise. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“the FE-300 is a very simple to use camera with 18 “best shot” modes, face recognition, and a 12-megapixel imaging sensor. As nice as the features are, the picture quality and shooting performance are slightly under par for a camera with a price near US$300.”
CNET – 25 October’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and comments that even with the low price the picture quality brings this camera to its knees. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“The Olympus FE-300 impressed us as one of the smallest, least expensive 12-megapixel digital cameras out there. Unfortunately, its slow performance and poor image quality makes us reach for our older 8-megapixel stand-bys.”
InfoSync – 23 October’07 – reviews the Olympus FE-300 and notes this camera’s lens quality cripples the overall image quality. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The FE-300 doesn’t do anything poorly, unfortunately it doesn’t do anything spectacular, either. We found it to be a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. The beefy stats and the slim metal design helped, but a few quirks that seem to span across all Olympus models still bother us. We’re also not sure about the matte screen, and it will be interesting to see if/when Olympus uses it in the future.”
