DPInterface
“The Nikon Coolpix S60 has a decent feature set and well implemented user interface; but the camera is letdown by its image quality (high noise levels and slightly soft results) and crummy battery life. It COULD have been an overall fantastic touchscreen camera, but unfortunately, it is not. Well, at least you now know what Nikon’s touchscreen interface looks like… perhaps it’s worth waiting till September when the Coolpix S70 (another touchscreen camera) comes out to see if that camera produces better images.”

“Image quality is fine if you take pictures in well-lit situations, with largely accurate colours and white-balance, hardly any signs of unwanted colour fringing, plus effective built-in flash and vibration reduction systems. Stray into more dimly-lit environments, like your local pub, however, and the Nikon S60 exhibits obvious noise and softening of detail at ISO 400 and faster, rather negating the ability to freely pick from the range of ISO speeds on offer.”

“Other useful features include the ability to zoom in and crop a picture in-camera as well as making a smaller version for Web display. The original picture is untouched and a copy is saved in each case. If you do not like to post-process your pictures, these features might just make your life easier.”

“Picture quality compares well with other pocket digital cameras. The touch controlled LCD screen will appeal to gadget lovers. The camera is easy enough to use, looks good and is certainly an option to add to your shortlist.”

NeoCamera
“Overall image quality and speed is average with some good points like color, sharpness and shutter-lag. Not so good points include high noise and low details from ISO 400 up, pronounced optical distortion and relatively slow auto-focus on average.”

Wired
“Images aren’t very crisp, unless they’re well-lit outdoors shots. Short-lived battery. Overly wide touchscreen leaves no room for your fingers to hold the camera without inadvertently switching settings.”

PCMag
“The snazzy Coolpix S60 isn’t a horrible camera; it just falls short of the competition on all counts.”

Pocket-lint
“Nikon has produced a camera that is not only easy to use, but also takes better than average pictures. However, picture quality isn’t the best around: Nikon do a better job themselves with other models, but this is a model still worth looking at.”

CNET Asia
“While we were impressed by the S60’s full touchscreen operations and iPhone-like navigation interface in its playback mode, the image quality was a bit of a disappointment.”

CNET
“It would be great if the touch-screen interface was a little snappier in areas and a physical zoom rocker or at least moving the onscreen one higher on the display would be welcomed.”

Press Release

Amsterdam , the Netherlands, 7 August 2008 – Nikon Europe is proud to announce the introduction of the COOLPIX S60 – an advanced and stylish compact digital camera featuring a large 3.5-inch wide-screen LCD monitor with unique touch-panel control. Its 10-megapixel resolution offers clear, high-quality pictures with a NIKKOR 5x zoom lens for dynamic telephoto shooting. Quality shots are ensured through its Vibration Reduction capability and high ISO sensitivity. The COOLPIX S60 offers advanced features, such as Scene Auto Selector, enhanced Face Recognition, Smile Timer with blink detection, time-lapse movies, in-camera retouch and HDMi output.

Mark Pekelharing, Product Manager Consumer Products at Nikon Europe B.V: “The COOLPIX S60 is the perfect marriage between technology and style. Nikon has introduced a host of features to make this camera easy to use and packed it with superb innovations derived from our professional D-SLR line for optimal imaging. We are confident that the numerous colour options will appeal to those looking for the combination of quality and good looks in a single package.”

Quality imaging

10 Effective megapixels offer high-resolution, high-quality images while the use of Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED image-processing system, originally designed for its award-winning professional D-SLRs, ensures the data obtained from the image sensor are processed at high speed and with the greatest precision. The camera’s 5x optical zoom-NIKKOR lens with Nikon’s original folded optics ensures the camera remains slim and stylish while not losing out on image quality.

The human touch

Most camera functions are controlled by directly touching the large, 3.5-inch widescreen TFT monitor. With a wide viewing angle of approximately 160?, viewing is easy even from a diagonal. Anti-reflection coating further enhances viewing ease, while the touch panel makes the camera easy to use. If you want to enjoy your pictures with others in larger format while retaining image quality, simply connect the camera to an HDMi TV.

To help you take better pictures, the camera can automatically select the best scene through its Auto Scene Selector mode. To take a picture, simply touch any subject on the screen and the camera will automatically focus for you and set the best exposure. The enhanced Face Recognition feature keeps track of moving objects, ensuring they remain in focus.

Banish blur

The camera boasts three functions to reduce image blur. High-performance Image Sensor Vibration Reduction (VR) allows sharp pictures with minimal blur even in telephoto shooting using optical zoom and digital zoom. Its superior noise-reduction ISO technology allows a sensitivity range up to ISO 3200 with pixel addition for correct exposure and sharpness even in low-light conditions. Thirdly, with Nikon’s Best Shot Selector, the camera takes a maximum of 10 sequential shots and automatically saves the sharpest image. This is ideal for macro close-up shooting when camera shake is difficult to avoid.

The perfect smile

When photographing friends or family, the improved Face-priority AF recognises up to 12 faces for both superb portrait photography and crisp group images, even when faces are easily underexposed in backlit conditions, overexposed in strong sunshine or moving around. The camera’s movie function and time-lapse movie can shoot 30 fps at up to 640×480 pixels. The 17 Scene Modes, including modes for tough-to-shoot environments such as beach/snow, sunset, dusk/dawn and fireworks shows, mean you’ll capture even the trickiest subjects perfectly. If you need to retouch any picture, the camera has a wealth of image-editing tools built-in, including a memo function.

Looking good out there

At just some 97 (w) x 60 (h) x 22 (d) mm and weighing in at a mere 145 grams, the COOLPIX S60’s slim and compact body will travel happily anywhere. With a high-quality body, aluminium front panel and altered Wave shape, the integrated curved lines fit any hand-size perfectly. And because the camera’s available in a range of body colours, there’s a colour to suit anyone’s style.
