ImagingResource - 17 September’07 - reviews the Nikon Coolpix S50 and writes;
“the Nikon S50 was disappointing. Its great looks and slim form made me want to like it, but too many other factors got in the way. The slow, sluggish zoom combined with a very small zoom rocker made basic framing a frustrating chore. The Nikon S50’s big, beautiful LCD pushes the Multi-controller so far right that they had to put the EV icon on the right panel; and the sad part is, though it sounds like a joke, it isn’t! Optical quality suffers at both wide and tele, with significant softening and chromatic aberration, and the pronounced barrel distortion curves straight lines way too much at wide angle. Focus speed and image detail were also disappointing, as were battery life and lens performance.”

PopPhoto reviews the Nikon Coolpix S50 and writes;
“The 7.2 MP Coolpix S50 has some thoroughly modern design elements and features a sexy, black satin finish that oozes luster in between the highly polished chrome embellishments. It’s a good looking addition to any pocket and the chrome treatment for the buttons and components gives it that air of sophistication that few can ignore when it’s pulled out for a snapshot. Flipping the S50 over, you see the generous 3-inch (230,000 pixel) LCD viewfinder and viewing screen and to the right, an additional collection of chrome buttons that feel solid and ergonomically well placed but small in comparison to the S500.”

Steve’s Digicams 6/19/2007 - reviews the Nikon Coolpix S50 and writes, “While the Nikon Coolpix S50 offers some very appealing features, I was a bit disappointed with its shooting performance results. It does have the ability to capture some very nice photos, however trying to shoot a fast moving child while running through the house can be challenging. That said, with an MSRP of US$299 or less, I feel there are better 7-megapixel “ultra-compact” models out there in this price range.”

Digital Camera Review - 5/25/2007 - tests the Nikon Coolpix S50 and writes, “The Nikon Coolpix S50 produces very good image and color fidelity in a stylish compact digital camera, and the big 3 inch monitor makes smaller monitors seem obsolete by comparison. While lacking manual controls, the S50 offers new photographers a user-friendly device whose overall performance can only enhance the confidence of novice shooters. At the same time, more experienced shooters who need a reliable, no-frills camera with some quality creative features won’t be barking up the wrong tree if they choose the S50.”
