PCMag – 14 November’07 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and notes it is a decent yet unremarkable camera, Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“Though it doesn’t excel in any particular area, the camera consistently captures good exposures and operates quite responsively. This camera has numerous competitors in the ultra compact market, and it doesn’t seriously challenge them with any exceptional capabilities.”
Cameras.co.uk – 25 September’07 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes;
“The Nikon Coolpix S200 left me feeling disappointed. It looks good, feels good and is easy to use, but I struggled with picture quality. I would suggest having a good look at other pocket sized digital cameras before buying this one.”
Imaging-Resource – 23 September’07 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes;
“The Nikon Coolpix S200 is small, slim, and stylish, but its images are a little disappointing when compared to other cameras on the market. On the plus side, the camera looks good and is easy to use–two attributes that snapshooters value. A minimal feature set contributes to that ease of use as does the built-in Help system that explains the purpose of the camera’s features with just the touch of the Zoom lever. Nikon has developed some useful technology such as D-Lighting and Best Shot Selector, both of which provide easy but practical solutions to common problems such as under-exposure. But that may not be enough to offset the S200’s above average image noise, especially when using the electronic Vibration Reduction which takes the ISO setting out of the user’s hands. It’s one thing to knowingly boost the ISO on your own; it’s risky, though, to not know if or when the camera will increase the light sensitivity to the point where your photo will be unprintable. But, if most of your photographs are shot in bright light or with a flash, then the S200’s function may be equal to its stylish form.”
TrustedReviews evaluates the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes;
“Despite the prestigious Nikon badge, the S200 is a pretty run-of-the-mill ultra-compact, with little to distinguish it from several competing models. It is very slim and light, build quality is well up to the usual Nikon standard, and the camera handles well. The electronic vibration reduction also works well, and does give the camera a slight edge over models with only ISO-boost, but this is let down by terrible low-light focusing, average performance and indifferent image quality. Not too bad for the price, but there are better ultra-compact cameras, and better Nikons.”
CNET reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and was not very enthused by its picture quality and low light performance. What the reviewer really liked was the white balance and the fact that it did a really nice job of figuring out how to render appropriate colors even in challenging situations. However, on a negative note the sub par lens tended to distort photos.
Bottom Line: Here’s one stylish camera with performance that does not rise up to the occasion.

ePhotozine – 7/26/2006 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes the camera produces accurate colors and its macro mode works sell. At the lower end of the ISO range the image results were clear of digital noise. At ISO 200 digital noise started to show up in the pictures. At the upper levels f the ISO range images had obvious quality loss and appeared grainy. One thing the review liked was the fact the LCD was easy to view in sunlight.

Popular Science Magazine – 7/16/2007 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “The S200 was noticeably slower at detecting faces, failed to track them well if they moved around, and occasionally mistook high-contrast objects, such as neon lights, for people. Unlike the Fujifilm and Sony cameras, which have dedicated face-tracking circuitry, the S200 runs the software on its main image processor, which might explain the sluggish performance. Otherwise, it takes serviceable, but not stunning, photos. One nice feature: Its LCD can stay bright for framing shots in low light.”
Steve’s Digicams – 6/15/2007 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “The Nikon Coolpix S200 is an appealing ultra-compact model, with easy to use features, good image quality and performance, all packaged in a very compact and stylish shell. With a street price of US$249 or less, the S200 offers a good value for such a capable little digicam. Therefore, if you’re one who is on the market for a camera that can be tucked away almost anywhere and shoots nice photos without much fuss, be sure to take a good look a this model.”
Pocket-lint – 6/13/2007 – reviews the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “The S200 could be looked at as a Coolpix S500-lite, but that fails to recognise the excellent build and features that make the S200 an accomplished machine in its own right at a good price.
Yes, the e-VR foibles mean if you have an extra £50, the S500’s optical image stabilisation might be a better option for you, but the otherwise excellent image quality, particularly below ISO 200 means the S200 is well worth looking at.
Overall, then, the camera works well, looks nice and takes cracking pictures.”
Personal Computer World – 6/12/2007 – reviesw the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “Advanced photographers will be disappointed with the lack of aperture/shutter priority and a full manual mode, but those who just want to take decent photos with the minimum of fuss will find its fifteen simple scene modes and helpful on-screen explanations make it easy to take the best pictures in a wide range of situations.”
Digital Camera Review – 5/22/2007 – has a hand on first thoughts review of the Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “I recently spent a month using Canon’s new SD1000 Digital Elph and while the tiny S200 doesn’t match the SD1000 in creative flexibility or manual exposure options – it is only half as thick – and it does (in my opinion) compete on equal terms with the SD1000 in the image quality department.
GoodGearGuide – 5/2/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “The most obvious issue upon opening our test shots was haloing. Towards the edge our shots, in high contrast areas, there was an extremely obvious blue halo around certain elements of the picture. This was visible even when the shot was viewed at a small size and really detracted from the picture.”
Megapixel – 4/19/2007 – has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Nikon Coolpix S200 and writes, “Negatives: Wide angle images a bit too soft – Some distortion at both ends of the zoom – Sensitive to noise above 200 ISO Positives: Good image quality with good lighting – Excellent colour rendition – Excellent metering – 2.5-inch monitor with a good resolution and high refresh rate – Simple to use – Very compact and light.”
