Imaging Resource - 3/19/2007 - reviews the 7.2 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L5 and writes, “If you’re an entry-level photographer happy to let your digital camera do all the work, the Nikon Coolpix L5 may be right for you. Packed with advanced features taken from Nikon’s higher-end P-series, the Nikon Coolpix L5 is a very sophisticated model at a very attractive sub-$300 price. (We’ve even seen it for as low as $200 at some online retailers.) In addition to a long Nikkor-branded 5x optical (38-190mm lens on a 35mm camera) zoom lens, the Nikon Coolpix L5 features Nikon’s lens-shift VR (Vibration Reduction) optical image stabilization technology which helps steady long-range shots.”
Steve’s Digicams - 3/1/2007 - reviews the 7.2 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L5 and writes, “Nikon’s Coolpix L5 is an appealing entry-level model. While suffering from poor shooting performance, like we have seen with all of the “L” series models, it does offer great image quality along with various high-end features. With a street price of US$249 or less, it offers an Ok value for a 7-megapixel digicam.”
TrustedReviews reviews the 7.2 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L5 and indicates it is one of Nikon’s more technologically advanced point and shoots. They continue to write, “The Nikon CoolPix L5 is something of a mixed bag. It offers a useful zoom range and resolution, easy handling and simple operation, but the slow performance, bulky appearance and poor image quality are significant disadvantages. There are better cameras available for not much more money.”
Megapixel 2/15/2007 - reviews the 7.2 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L5 and indicates it is one of Nikon’s more technologically advanced point and shoots. They continue to write, “The external controls of the Coolpix L5 are clearly labelled and easily accessed, making it easy to get familiar with the camera’s operation. This is in addition to a good ergonomic design that allows for comfortable handholds.
One aspect of the design, however, could be improved. Although the monitor measures 2.5 inches diagonally, its image is relatively coarse and under some circumstances grainy, making it often difficult to evaluate sharpness with certainty.”

p>DigitalCameraReview - 1/11/2007 - has reviewed the 7.2 megapixel Nikon Coolpix L5 and was intrigued by the L5’s “Best Shot” feature. They continue to write - “The Nikon Coolpix L5 is a light compact camera with a bundle of nice features that offers novice shooters a quick and easy way to shoot digital photos under a wide variety of conditions with relative ease, as well as do some simple processing and image correction in-camera. The camera would benefit from an in-camera adjustment to sharpen the images somewhat.”
DCRP - 12-12-2006 - has reviewed the 7.2 megapixel entry level Nikon Coolpix L5 digital camera and here’s the verdict - “While it has its share of nice features, ultimately I was disappointed with the Nikon Coolpix L5. I like its build quality, 5X zoom lens, image stabilization, and powerful flash, but its sluggish performance, low resolution LCD, lack of manual settings, and so-so photo quality make it a camera that I’d recommend passing over.”
PhotographyBlog - 12/11/2006 - has reviewed the 7.2 megapixel entry level Nikon Coolpix L5 digital camera and here’s the verdict - “The Nikon Coolpix L5 compact camera has a very similar feature set to its brother, the L6, which I reviewed at the same time. Of course, the extra zoom range, resolution and the inclusion of VR technology developed for Nikon’s DSLR range puts the L5 ahead of its lesser specified brother on first look. That said, the L6 impressed me in terms of its image quality, which may have partly been down to the fact that I wasn’t expecting great things. The L6 is better suited to daylight photography, however, with that wobbly hand icon making quite a number of appearances when skies were any less than blue in hue, leading me to conclude that the L5 is indeed the preferred all-round option for a pocket snapshot camera, even if its design is bulkier and more clunky.”
CNET - 11/6/2006 - has reviewed the 7.2 megapixel entry level Nikon Coolpix L5 digital camera and here’s the verdict - “Given the Nikon Coolpix L5’s horribly slow performance and its so-so image quality, it’s particularly difficult to recommend it, especially since Nikon’s own 6-megapixel Coolpix L6 provides better image quality, though similarly slow performance, at a lower price.”
Nikon Coolpix L5 Initial Press Release
Amsterdam, the Netherlands: Nikon Corporation is has unveiled the COOLPIX L5, the latest in their line-up of entry-level compact digital cameras, which offers extreme user-friendly operation without compromising quality of the end-product.
A generous 7.2 megapixels produces images with great picture clarity, which can be fully appreciated on the bright 2.5in LCD with backlight. The powerful, 38-190mm Zoom-Nikkor lens (35mm equivalent) ensures matchless compositional freedom, from zooming in for intimate personal portraits to zooming out for expansive outdoor scenes. Lens shift Vibration Reduction (VR) technology allows the user to make the most of 5x zooming. While the dimensions of the model are surprisingly compact, it is usefully compatible with the universally-available AA size batteries.
