“Overall performance was descent for a camera in this class, but image quality is lacking a bit. The Nikon Coolpix L18 is not our top pick in this class, and we suggest you look at several other entry-level cameras on the market before making a purchase.”

“We’d confidently recommend the L18 to someone looking for a literal ‘push the button take a photograph’ device, but anyone else shouldn’t be setting their sights this low.”

GoodGearGuide has reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L18 and writes -
“Physically, the L18 is quite plain. It follows the same trend as past L series models. The camera is built from dull silver plastic and is quite sturdy, with a deceptive amount of weight behind it. The controls and interface will be familiar to anyone who has used other Nikon units. While they aren’t perfect, they do the job.”

ThinkCamera has reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L18 and writes -
“Not a camera for the enthusiast under any circumstances, the Nikon Coolpix L18 has two big things going for it. It’s really cheap and really easy. This can be picked up for £80 or less and there are toasters that are more complicated to use than this camera.”

LapTopMag has reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L18 and writes -
“A great camera when it comes to ease of use, but I have to admit to being disappointed with both the picture quality I managed to produce from this camera and also the shutter lag times. In my opinion there are better digital cameras around for a similar price.”

Actual Owner Feedback

“Bought this for a graduation present. Sent it off to their college – it did not work. I tried to get it to work later and it ‘takes’ a picture but nothing goes to any memory (internal or SD card).”

“Incredibly slow shutter speed – I ended up erasing half my pictures because all that was left was background or landscape – the action had already left. A couple of times the gap between pressing the button and the camera actually executing was over 6 seconds.”
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“Great little camera! Uses standard “AA” batteries and takes a good photo. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the more expensive cameras but it is more than adequate for the average person’s snapshots.”
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“My only disappointment was that just after about 3 days of using this camera, the LCD screen began to give problems. There were lines and different colors going through the display which is really distracting when you need to preview your photos or videos. The quality when eventually uploaded is great, but I hate that the screen is bad. “
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com

“I like this camera a lot. Good speed and image quality for the value. After seeing the Canon A580 I think I may have purchased that one, but I was looking for something very user friendly for my wife, so this works fine.”

Tokyo, January 29, 2008 — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the COOLPIX L16 and L18, quality compact digital cameras that combine high performance with operating ease. The COOLPIX L18 and L16 offer simple operation for beautiful photographs and are equipped with Nikon’s innovative EXPEED digital image processing concept and a NIKKOR lens.

Intuitive operation ensures error-free command over the performance features of the COOLPIX L18 and L16. Dedicated buttons on the top of the body make it easy to switch between shooting and playback modes. The large 3.0-inch (L18) and 2.8-inch (L16) LCD monitors offer a bright image that is a pleasure to view, even outdoors. And the body itself assures a solid grip with a balance of flowing surfaces contrasted by sharp edge lines.

The COOLPIX L18 and L16 make full use of their respective 8.0 and 7.1 effective megapixels of imaging power to capture true-to-life color and leaves plenty of freedom to crop or produce enlargements. And the precision optics of a 3x Zoom-NIKKOR lens covers a practical range from 35-105mm (35mm format equivalent) to ably capture everything from group shots to close-up portraits. Extended light sensitivity as high as ISO 1600 prevents blurred shots in lower light, or when capturing fast-moving subjects.

The COOLPIX L18 and L16 feature Easy auto mode where users can turn on the camera and shoot without worrying about any settings. Automatically enabled D-Lighting and Anti-shake AE compensate for lighting and camera movement, enabling users to shoot great pictures without difficult operation. The COOLPIX L18 will be available in Silver, Matte Black, Blue and Red, while the COOLPIX L16 will be available in Silver and Matte Black*.

* Color availability may vary according to region.

Nikon COOLPIX L18/L16 Feature Highlights

Easy auto mode and scene modes for carefree shooting
Easy auto mode makes it easier to turn on the camera and shoot without worrying about settings. Easy access to 14 different scene modes and three movie modes also ensures shooting that is tuned to give the best results to match the moment.

Anti-shake AE for great pictures at great ease
Effortlessly take better pictures with the COOLPIX L18 and L16 with new Anti-shake AE. It detects subject movement and camera shake, and automatically overcomes blur by adjusting to high shutter speeds and higher ISO sensitivity.

Three Unique Nikon Image Innovations
The COOLPIX L18 and L16 feature a selection of three innovative functions that provide the ability to actually improve the quality of images within the camera. Face-priority AF* automatically finds, then focuses on people’s faces for crisp, clear results time after time. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically compensates to help eradicate traces of the annoying red-eye effect that can sometimes be encountered during flash photography. And D-Lighting can be applied to improve underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight. D-Lighting automatically creates a copy of the image with detail added where necessary, but with well-exposed areas left completely untouched.

*Face recognition capability may be limited in some shooting conditions.

ISO 1600 capability for better pictures in lower light
Making it easier to take great-looking pictures in lower lighting conditions, or to capture fast-moving subjects with outstanding clarity, the COOLPIX L18 and L16 accurately measure available light to automatically select the optimal sensitivity setting for the shot between the range of ISO 64 to as high as ISO 1600.
