New York Times Report – Do-It-Yourself-Photoprinting Doesn’t Add Up

by DCT on October 10, 2005

New York Times writer Damon Darlin points out that prices of photo printers have dropped over 30 percent in the last few months. Question is, should you buy one? At $200 the Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 8250 that in just 14 seconds yields quality equal to the photo finisher.

The catch – after the initial investment, you’re going to pay at least 28 cents a print, according to manufacturers’ propaganda. Consumer Reports indicates it will be closer to 50 cents a print, ouch.

Meanwile, the price of printing a 4-by-6-inch snapshot at a retailer’s photo lab, like those inside a Sam’s Club, is as low as 13 cents. Snapfish.com, an online mail-order service, offers prints for a dime each if you prepay. At those prices, why bother printing at home?

Looks like consumers ae beginning to say just that.
