Photography Review - 7/18/2007 - has tested the Leica D-Lux 3 and writes, “The D-LUX 3 one of the best- point-and-shoot digital cameras I’ve used. The large LCD monitor, rich feature set, and uncanny ability to secure good candid, landscape, reportage images under a wide variety of lighting conditions make it a pleasure to take pictures with. However, the D-LUX 3 does not do so well with action shots. This should be no surprise from a small camera without an optical viewfinder and a limited aperture range. Its built-in flash is prone to red-eye in portraits. It outperforms the D-LUX 2 with greatly improved digital noise control, a lower asking price, increased resolution, extended ISO range, and larger rear panel LCD. The new Venus 3 digital imaging engine can capture images in lower light without generating excessive digital noise. Even so, ISO 100 and 200 will still deliver the best image quality.”

PCW - 1/18/2007 - reviews the 10 megapixel Leica D-LUX 3 and they write - “The D-Lux 3 crams a lot of features into a very small camera. It has all the control a serious enthusiast could ask for without the bulk of an SLR. A few problems with noise are to be expected in a camera of this size, but many tools are at your disposal to help overcome them. The biggest drawback to this camera is its price. If you can live without the Leica name tag, then Panasonic’s Lumix LX2 is almost identical and costs less.”

CNET - 12/6/2006 - has a new review of the 10 megapixel Leica D-LUX 3 and they write - “The good: Great lens; nice design; lots of manual controls. The bad: Generally soft photos; mediocre movies; no optical viewfinder; expensive. The bottom line: A good choice for an enthusiast looking for a powerful camera that can fit into a jacket pocket; however, the Leica D-Lux 3 has a price only a Leica aficionado could love.”

DigitalCameraReview - 11/4/2006 - has a new user review of the 10 megapixel Leica D-LUX 3 and they write - “So here we are, is this camera a “buy” or not? Well it’s a very mixed bag. For every wonderful thing there is a countering negative. And yet the camera is very expensive, even more so than its Panasonic twin. If you can get past the lack of a viewfinder, the slow USB, and the price tag (lets say you’re a big Leica fan) then yes buy. If not then no.”

Press Release

Leica Camera AG, Solms is exhibiting the new LEICA D-LUX 3 at photokina in Cologne (26th September to 1st October 2006). The D-LUX 3 is a compact digital camera with outstandingly high-performance optics and a comprehensive range of settings. The camera offers 10 million pixels and many technical improvements compared to its predecessor, the LEICA D-LUX 2.

The high-performance LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT 1:2.8-4.9/6.3-25.2 ASPH zoom lens on the LEICA D-LUX 3 permits a wide range of focal lengths from 28 to 112 millimetres in small picture format, allowing creative scope in picture composition from wide-angle through to the telephoto range. The integral picture stabiliser gives the user additional protection against camera shake in all photography situations, even under difficult lighting conditions. A total of three picture formats (16:9, 3:2 and 4:3) in different resolutions are available for pictures. The display on the LEICA D-LUX 3 has been increased to 2.8“, allowing for the first time the full extent of a picture to be displayed in 16:9 format. The image signal processor has also been improved in comparison to its predecessor model, delivering even faster image processing and saving within the camera. This allows the LEICA D-LUX 3 to be used quickly, reliably and spontaneously at any moment.
