Reviewers Conclusions & Verdicts - (updated 27 September’08)

Cameras.co.uk
“The Kodak Easyshare Z8612 IS does have some good points, but these are outweighed by the problems I encountered with picture quality. Even though this camera has a lower price tag compared with other super zoom cameras I don’t feel it offers great value for money. “

“The Kodak EasyShare Z8612 IS may be relatively cheap for a long-zoom model, but its numerous shortcomings mean that it’s not particularly good value for money. Build quality is below average, it has a number of annoying handling problems, and overall performance is very slow.”

Actual Owner Feedback

“I have only had the camera for a couple of days and I’m already very pleased with it. Takes wonderful pictures right out of the box in the Auto mode, but there are many different features that I will have to play around with.”

“I only got to play with this camera for five minutes at Staples, but expect me to place my order soon. For the price, these features are usually unheard of. The camera shot super clear pictures zoomed completely out or completely in.”

The 10MP Easyshare Z1085 IS and its 12MP sibling, the Z1285 are 5X optical zoom cameras that are also able to record HD format video and display their stills on HDTVs. They also both offer MPEG-4 compression to help get the large 720p30 HD format files down to a sensible size.

Both are mid-sized compact cameras built around 5X zoom Schneider-Kreuznach-branded lenses. The 35-175mm (in 35 equivalent terms), lenses have maximum apertures of f/2.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom and f/5.1 at the long end. They are expected in January 2008. The Z1085 IS features optical stabilization and higher full-res High ISO than the Z1285 that drops to 3.1MP for ISO 3200.

The Easyshare Z8612 IS meanwhile offers a 12X optical zoom, covering a 36–432 mm range (in 35mm equivalent terms), at f/2.8-4.8. It is an 8.1MP camera that offers ISO 3200 at 2.2 MP. It cannot record HD video, however and its styling is very different from the other two Z series cameras, with rather low-key appearance. It is expected to be available from April 2008.

In common with the latest additions to its ‘V’ and ‘Z’ ranges, the company says the latest models are designed to fit with Kodak’s “you press the button, we do the rest,” ethos.
