Is that Photo a Fake or an Original?

by DCT on March 16, 2009

jpegforOne of the problems with photos on the Internet is that it’s tough to determine whether the photo has been edited or not. The deceptive practice of photo editing really comes into play with the various “leaked images of upcoming digital camera products.”

It is not always best to trust your eyes when it comes to deciding the reliability of a photo. As photo editing software has become more sophisticated the task of determining a photos dependability has become harder.

Now there is a tool that can help you judge whether an image is an original or if the image has been edited in Photoshop. JPEGsnoop is a free application that can determine whether the photo was edited or is an original.

Once JPEGsnoop scans an image is returns an assessment report indicating what digital camera or software was likely used to generate the image. This is very useful in determining whether or not a photo has been edited or tampered with in any way. If the compression signature matches Photoshop, then it’s pretty clear the photo is no longer an original! This sometimes referred to as Digital Image Ballistics / Forensics.
