Steve’s Digicams - 20 September’07 - reviews the Canon EOS 40D and writes;
“The PhotoSmart R837 is a very appealing 7.2-megapixel model. With this camera offering good image quality, a slew of in camera features, photo enhancements and a full built in help menu, we feel it will make a good choice for the family or even for at the office. With a street price of about $199 or less, it offers and outstanding “bang for your buck” and is sure to be yet another popular HP model.”

LapTop Magazine - 5/27/2007 - has reviewed the HP Photosmart R837 and they write, “The HP Photosmart R837 packs a lot of features into a simple, pocket-friendly design at an attractive price. The low-light performance is mediocre, but this is a solid choice for first-time digicam owners or for anyone looking for an easy-to-use point and shoot.”

CNET - 5/11/2007 - has reviewed the HP Photosmart R837 and writes, “The HP Photosmart R837 distinguishes itself with its attractive design and numerous onboard editing and organizing options. Unfortunately, fringing and softening plague its photos, while its wiggly lens cover will quickly get on your nerves. If you absolutely need a budget snapshot camera with a sliding lens cover, the R837 is probably your only option. If the distinctive design isn’t your biggest concern, you can easily find a solid, inexpensive shooter to outshine the R837. Consider instead the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 or the Kodak EasyShare C875. They don’t have the same sliding style as the R837, but they shoot better photos, and at faster speeds.”

Computer Active - 4/2/2007 - reviews the HP Photosmart R837 and writes, “We liked the colourful pictures the R837 delivered enough to overlook the fact that light sensitivity is capped at a lowly ISO400, so this isn’t the right tool for low light photography without flash.

Image noise think a fuzzy TV signal is also noticeable in shadow detail at this top setting, while ‘pixel fringing’ (a purple glow around objects) is evident between areas of high contrast: a dark building and a bright sky for example.

These problems are common to most budget digital cameras, so it seems churlish to be too critical of the R837. It’s easy to use the menu screens are bright and clear, and there’s even an on-board help menu to guide you through the settings and controls.”

Photography Blog - 4/2/2007 - reviews the HP Photosmart R837 and writes, “OK, so the HP Photosmart R837 doesn’t contain any bells and whistles to get a photo enthusiast’s blood pumping, but that’s like criticizing a slice of toast for not being a full English breakfast. It’s therefore hard to take offense to this cute little camera; the R837 is well constructed, fairly priced, intuitive to use, and delivers images of reasonable quality for what it is although red eye is a real problem and you can imagine the target market tiring of constantly performing the in-camera fixes eventually. If you’re after a fully automatic point and shoot to carry around in the daytime or evening when your bulkier DSLR or bridge camera is back at home or the hotel and you can’t afford the premium point-and-shoot likes of a Canon IXUS then, I’m surprised to witness myself write, this latest HP not usually known as a cool brand in any respect comes recommended. The family user appears to be the one who will get the most out of the HP R837 it’s simple enough for the kids to operate and fun too. With the summer holidays approaching it’s perhaps only a shame that HP didn’t make it water or shockproof. Therefore for those looking for an occasional use snapshot, and who don’t want to break the bank, the HP Photosmart R837 is worthy of further investigation.”

Pocket-lint - 3/14/2007 - reviews the HP Photosmart R837 and writes, “While we wouldn’t recommend this camera to those looking for great pictures no matter what the setting, we would recommend it for first time buyers looking for a very consumer friendly model to get them started in the world of digital photography.

HP has focused this camera to usability and for the most part it succeeds, the menus are easy to understand, the picture taking on-board help helpful and the ability to tag images on the fly for easy storage later (including creating your own tags to import back from a PC) really useful.”

PC Mag - 3/8/2007 - reviews the HP Photosmart R837 and writes, “Although not an awful camera, when I compare the camera to a number of other ultracompacts—like Casio’s Exilim EX-S770 (Check back soon for my review) or even Canon’s PowerShot SD900, I found that the HP Photosmart R837 just doesn’t quite perform or capture images as well.”
