Fujifilm FinePix REAL 3D W1 is the first 3D digital camera and it features two Fujinon lenses and two CCDs to capture 3D images with FinePix REAL 3D Technology. You take two shots of the same subject from different positions, and the camera automatically merges and saves the captured images as a single enhanced 3D photo. The two images are processed by the RP Processor 3D – which evaluates all factors from focus and brightness to color, and then merges the left and right images in a single 3D image.

But it’s a little on the awkward side to handle, the 3D effect only works with certain of subjects, and the whole 3D experience could cost you a fortune. The key point, perhaps, is that you can’t go around shooting everything you would normally shoot and expect it to work in 3D.”

“It’s impressive. The camera is heavy, but it’s metal body feels very sturdy despite its brick-like-ness. Snaps I took of my coffee cup and danish popped on the LCD just the way Fuji’s engineers said they would. I also had fun tinkering with the image ghosting (or parallax) controls, which let you control how much overlap there is between the two JPEGs to determine what part of the image you want to appear in 3D; I was able to shift focus from my mug to a camera in the background.”

“I love the effect it gives and it does look realistic but it’s worth keeping in mind that true 3D has the facility to interact with it by moving around it such as a statue gives you. This is a 3D effect image which shows considerable depth compared to normal photograph but is more similar to the Magic Eye images that used to be popular where you had to find a dinosaur.”

“For those who are already addicted to 3D content creation, be it video or still, the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 is a dream come true. It takes a lot of the hassle out of 3D image creation, but doesn’t limit you to auto-only features. It’s a shame, then, that there isn’t anything supplied in the box to handle the software conversions you’ll probably find yourself doing. Fujifilm have muttered previously that software should be coming, but no sign of it yet.”

“So what’s the verdict? If you’ll excuse the analogy, this is closer to an LG Watch Phone of the camera world than an iPhone. If you want something to show off, it’s great, and the tech is certainly ground breaking. If you want a camera for regular use, it’s not so hot.”
