“Disappointingly, after a two-second power-up the zoom action proved slightly jerky, and it can’t be used when shooting movies. Still, the camera is quick to focus, with minimal delay between pressing the shutter and taking the picture.”

CNET.co.uk has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“With crisp images, lots of features and accessible controls, the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd ticks all the boxes. We think the S8100fd is more stylish than most superzooms and in fact has very little to count against it.”

DigitalCameraReview has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“As with the model it replaces, the S8100fd really does hit just about all of the right notes. Limitations of and problems with this camera show themselves to be minor as a rule: in terms of basic performance, the S8100fd is a solid package that’s capable of quite a lot.”

ePhotozine has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“It’s fair to say this camera is designed for the user moving up from compacts and wants more creative control but doesn’t want too much fuss. The manual controls will allow just that and the large zoom in the compact body ensures you have more diversity at your fingertips without lugging a load of gear around.”

PCWorld has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“The Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd is a good all-rounder at a reasonable price. It offers plenty of automated assistance, but lets you tweak settings manually when necessary. It makes a good choice for anyone seeking a single camera for all occasions.”

InfoSyncWorld has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“That said, nothing particular about the Fujifilm S8100fd stands out as bad, and quite a bit stands out as good, thus making it a solid choice for those looking for a fixed-lens with plenty of zoom. Release: March 2008. Price: $360. Pros: 18x zoom. Good overall image quality. Great body. Cons: A bit noisy. Could really use a dial or wheel controller.”

PCW has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“Pros: Powerful zoom lens; image stabilisation; build quality; image quality; excellent low-light performance Cons: Low-resolution viewfinder; fiddly controls; no zoom during movie recording Overall: A pricey but impressive camera capable of turning difficult subjects into stunning photographs”

TrustedReviews has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“There’s not much to recommend the Finepix S8100fd. As a replacement for a DSLR, it offers a lightweight and compact alternative, without the added expense of the price of lenses to match the focal range offered. However I dislike the EVF on this camera intensely, and the handling in manual shooting modes is fiddly at best. Image quality is hit-or-miss, with horrible high ISO images and some aggressive sharpening. At lower ISOs images are better, but I find the majority of images too digital looking, lacking the finesse of some other models.”

Rating: ½½½½½

Pocket-lint has reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd and they write -
“At this price point the feel the dial quality could have been better and the F button is in a stupid place, but that’s not a deterrent to buying the camera. It is something of a hybrid, providing at one end some technical options and at the other, options for your eBay gallery. We do like the range of options presented by the S8100fd but the controls lose it marks.”

Actual Owner Feedback

“I found the Fujifilm S8100fd to be the perfect blend of advanced features, price and complexity level. I wanted something that had a good telephoto/zoom lens and this one is awesome.”
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com
“I bought this camera from a local camera shop during my vacation and it is wonderful. I needed something besides my point and shoot with image stablization and this fits the bill.”
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com
“I have taken couple shots with the 18x, very details, but your hand need to be very steady, even with the stablize function on. This is normal however. The only thing which is weak on this machine is the video, you can’t zoom during video is taking.”
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com
“I am not a photographer, and I have no wish to set this and that and that and that in order to take a picture, nor do I want to trust an auto that produces pics that nobody wants to look at. THIS CAMERA SOLVED THOSE PROBLEMS.”

Fujifilm UK today announced the launch of the long zoom, SLR-styled FinePix S8100fddigital camera, which combines user-friendliness with long-zoom versatility and high speed shooting modes that are rarely found in non-professional models.

Continuing on the success of the FinePix S8000fd, the 10 Megapixel FinePix S8100fd integrates a Fujinon 18x wide angle optical zoom fixed lens (27mm-486mm equivalent), letting the user achieve greater range than ever before and offers everything from true wide angle to extreme telephoto in a single compact unit. The sealed, fixed-lens system prevents dust contamination and eliminates the need for additional zoom or wide angle lenses, making it an easy-to-use, affordable alternative to the complex D-SLR system.

The big zoom advantage The FinePix S8100fd’s 18x zoom lens – first seen on the FinePix S8000fd - is ready for every possible photographic challenge, from landscapes and interiors to wildlife and sports action.

The wide angle is perfect for large group shots and sweeping holiday landscapes; the long telephoto lens is capable of picking out a single face on a distant stage or playing field, offering an unparalleled range of creative opportunities without the need for add-on lenses or adapters.

Face Detection Technology Fujifilm’s award-winning Face Detection Technology has enabled a number of advanced features that will excite both novice and more experienced photographers and make getting perfect portraits easier than ever. Face Detection operates by identifying and prioritising up to 10 faces in a frame and then adjusting the focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background. After the shot is captured the new automatic red-eye removal feature instantly checks each detected face for red-eye and if it’s found, corrects it in the camera automatically, saving the time-consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded.

A new Instant Zoom function captures moving subjects at high zoom settings. After zooming on a subject, a single button gives an additional 1.4x or 2x digital zoom at the centre focus region of the frame. Zoom Bracketing performs a similar action using Fujifilm’s Face Detection Technology to lock its zoom action on a subject’s face automatically as it enters the shot.

The FinePix S8100fd features Fujifilm’s Dual Image Stabilisation combining mechanical sensor shift stabilisation with Fujifilm’s Picture Stabilisation Technology, which uses fast shutter speeds and ISO levels of up to ISO 6400 (at 5 Megapixels) for total anti-blur protection. As a result the FinePix S8100fd produces sharp, blur-free photographs even in low light conditions.

A Continuous Shooting Mode makes it easy to shoot moving subjects such as pets, kids and sports. This new feature allows high-speed shooting of up to 33 frames at 13.5 frames per second (at 3 megapixels; 6.8 frames per second at 5 megapixels). With high-speed playback at 10 frames per second you can be sure you’ve captured all of the action.
