LapTopMag - 4/23/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “The unique face-detection feature, impressive low-light sensitivity, and all-around excellent performance make the FinePix F31fd a great choice for point-and-shoot shoppers looking for something more than a sleek design.”
DPReview - 4/11/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “Unlike so many manufacturers that produce amazing cameras with average sensors, Fuji has an amazing sensor and - to be brutally honest - an average camera. As with the F30 this is a camera that wins a Highly Recommended only if you regularly shoot in low light - if you only ever take pictures in blazing sunshine there are competitors with far more impressive feature lists or lower prices. But you just can’t take away from Fuji the fact that - at this moment in time - this unassuming little 6MP camera still sets the benchmark for image quality in the entire compact sector. It’s also a surprisingly reliable ‘point and shoot’ model with excellent color and accurate focus/metering in most circumstances.”
PhotographyReview - 4/10/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “The Fujifilm FinePix F31fd does a lot of things very well. Any failings the camera has are either minimal or standard among comparable cameras.
Face Detection sets the Fujifilm F31fd apart and makes it a leading contender for children and group photos that are usually a challenge for most point-and-shoot digital cameras.
The Fujifilm FinePix F31fd captures images that print well, it’s a strong performer in a wide set of photographic conditions, and it’s compact and handy enough to be an everyday all-purpose camera.”
DigitalTrends - 4/4/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “This is a good not great 6.3-megapixel digicam. Although it has a lot going for it, it really didn’t ring the bell for me. There were issues with sharpness, some focusing problems and the camera labored saving big files. And Face Detection, one of its highly touted features, didn’t measure up to competitors. If the F31fd dipped well below $300, I’d consider it but this Made In China digicam didn’t make my most favored list.”
Cameras.co.uk - 4/3/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “I’m a big fan of the Fuji Finepix F31fd. If you are looking for a digital camera with a bit of style that takes a good photo then this one is worth a close look. It has one or two extra features that come in handy, especially in lowlight. Therefore an area that can be a weakness with other digital cameras is a strength with this one.”
BusinessWeek - 3/27/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “The Good: Face-focus feature takes guesswork out of tricky shots - The Bad: Uses xD picture cards, which store less than SD cards - The Bottom Line: A great camera for those long-frustrated by lousy shots.”
PCWorld - 3/19/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “The antishake mode simply increases the shutter speed and ISO to reduce blur. Considering that the F31fd can go up to ISO 3200, that’s no small potatoes, but you may have to accept more digital noise in exchange for your sharper photos, which you wouldn’t if the camera offered optical image stabilization.
If you like shooting in low light or taking lots of pictures of people, the F31fd should prove to be a worthy workhorse.”
ComputerActive - 3/16/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “Overall image quality is good, but if you crop in 100 per cent you’ll see image noise causing some quality issues, even when shooting at ISO 100. That said, if you’re not planning to print out extra large photos and won’t be cropping in on detail too much, it’s not really a problem as you’re unlikely to notice it. Occasional purple fringing was apparent in areas of high contrast, but colour reproduction and the camera’s auto-exposure decisions were both good.”
PopPhoto - 3/12/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “Overall, there’s a lot to like about the F31FD. The one thing that I come back to again and again with this camera is the image quality, which is truly impressive and ultimately, at the end of the day, this is what’s going to make a great camera. The unit responds well and does exactly what it’s designed to do and as stated earlier, is amazing at shooting people photos. The startup and shutter response is quick and accurate — particularly if you’re shooting group shots in the face recognition mode. The other modes in the camera are well thought out and in most instances, deliver exactly what they were designed to do. I also really liked the feel of the camera. It simply has a stronger presence in comparison to other similar cameras and is nice to hold.”
ThinkCamera - 2/20/2007 - reviews the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “If you take lots of photos of people it will help you get the best focus for each person. The Fujifilm F31fd is perfect for getting that shot at the party with all your mates. It has a high ISO (can capture detail when it’s dark, keeping it sharp), it will balance the background and it won’t blow out their faces.”
Unbeatable - 2/2/2007 - has reviewed the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “We like the new features introduced with the Fuji Finepix F31FD digital camera as it is still very user-friendly but provides some great results. It is an ideal digital camera for holiday snaps and for special occasions such as weddings so you can make good use of the Face Detection feature. Good technology for a good price. We recommend it.”
PCW - 1/25/2007 - has reviewed the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and writes, “The Finepix F31fd has plenty going for it, and the Face Detection technology is a real bonus - especially for novice snappers fed up with blurred portrait shots. There are plenty of alternative cameras in this price bracket, including some with similar features to detect faces.”
TrustedReviews - 1/24/2007 - has reviewed the 8.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F40fd and thinks the image quality is very good. They continue to write, “Like its predecessor the F30, the Fujifilm FinePix F31fd has the best high-ISO performance on the market, as well as a number of other useful features, not least of which is class-leading battery duration. Build quality, style, performance and photographic results are also as good as anything else on the market. However the Face Detection technology is probably not enough to justify the relatively high price compared to the outstanding F30.”
PhotographyBlog - 1/6/2007 - has tested the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and here is their conclusion - “With the addition of Face Detection and Infra-red, the Fujifilm Finepix F31fd is currently the new best compact, carry-everywhere digital camera for the discerning photographer. There are still a few unnecessary faults though that are retained from the F11 model (come on Fujifilm!), and all that new technology has made the F31fd quite a lot more expensive than its older sibling, the F30, which is overall a more economical and sensible purchase.”
Digital-Lifestyles - 1/5/2007 - has tested the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and here is their conclusion - “The lack of real manual controls was a bit frustrating and we continue to find Fujifilm’s interface a little less intuitive than some of its rivals, but point’n’shooters should have no problem getting to grips with the camera.
However, all these minor niggles don’t stop us highly recommending the F31fd, with the camera offering class-leading low light performance, fast start up times, good flash performance and a sturdy build that should last for years.”
DigitalCameraInfo - 12/28/2006 - has tested the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and here is their conclusion - “The Fujifilm FinePix F31fd comes with the 6.3-megapixel Super CCD that has made the F-series known for its clean pictures. The sensor allows for pictures to be taken in just about any lighting with its wide ISO range up to 3200. The natural-looking i-Flash helps illuminate subjects too. The F31fd has trendy new technology that recognizes up to ten faces at a time and while tracking and focusing on them. This is great for portraits, and it keeps faces properly exposed. The new camera also has IrSimple technology for wirelessly communicating with other enabled devices. The techy digital camera comes as a jazzed up version of the F30. Fujifilm’s F30 was a good thing, and it is made better in the F31fd. The combination of cool technology, manual control, and all-around easy functionality makes the Fujifilm FinePix F31fd a standout digital camera.”
CNET Asia - 12/8/2006 - has tested the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and here is their conclusion - “The good: Face detection; wireless connectivity to IrSimple devices; increased built-in memory; low noise at high sensitivity settings. The bad: Boring design; lackluster continuous shooting mode; proprietary memory card format; no optical image stabilizer; lens could be wider. The bottom line: The Fujifilm FinePix F31fd carries on the leading high ISO performance from the F30 and is a solid all-round compact camera for general photography and low-light shooting.”
Trusted Reviews - 10/24/2006 - has tested the 6.3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F31fd and here is their conclusion - “The S6500fd is a very good camera for the price, with great handling, huge creative versatility and superior picture quality, but it suffers by comparison to the higher spec and similarly priced S9500 which is still available. The face-recognition technology is impressive, but really not all that useful. Will its outstanding high-ISO performance be enough to sell it?”
Fujifilm FinePix F31fd Initial Press Release
Fujifilm launches the FinePix F31fd with the world’s fastest Face Detection technology*
Fujifilm today announced the launch of the FinePix F31fd, its first pocketable digital camera to feature hardware-based Face Detection technology, which debuted with the announcement of the FinePix S6500fd in July 2006. Face Detection has great impact on people photography, ensuring the camera automatically focuses on and exposes for faces, rather than details that can confuse other cameras. Coping with up to ten faces in a frame, it ensures photos of friends and family are crisp, clear and perfectly exposed no matter what the occasion. Because Fujifilm’s Face Detection technology is built-in to the camera’s processor, it is able to identify faces, optimise settings and take the photo within just 0.05 seconds.
The FinePix F31fd inherits its feature set from its older brother, the TIPA and DIMA award winning FinePix F30. In particular its unrivalled low-light performance of ISO 3200 at full resolution, made possible by Fujifilm’s acclaimed Real Photo Processor II, combines with Face Detection to make the FinePix F31fd the ultimate compact for people photography. With Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens, 6 megapixel Super CCD HR VI, 2.5 inch LCD screen and unique Fujifilm technologies such as Intelligent Flash, the FinePix F31fd is perfect for anyone looking for a camera that will rise to any occasion.

this is a good/great (somewhere in between) low-light shooter with usable ISO of up to 800 compared with other rival camera models (Canon SD, Sony Cyber-shot..etc); there’s hardly a difference between 400 and 800 although (little) noise starts to kick in at this point.
pros: Aperture/Shutter priorities for a compact camera like this, reliable ISO, face detection, image quality, shutter speed, battery life, sturdy built, LCD screen.
cons: high(er) ISO will likely be set when on Auto mode, no O.I.S, uses xD storage, plastic battery cover/tripod mount, purple fringing on shadow highlights.
