Ken Rockwell has published a great article on “How to Use Histograms.” By definition Histograms chart how many pixels are black, white and everywhere in between.
Ken writes:
WHAT’S A HISTOGRAM?
Start with a big collection of random digits between 0 and 9. Read it out loud. Have a kid keep count of how many times you say each digit.
When you’re done the kid will have a tally of how many times each digit occurred.
Make a graph. Plot the counts vertically with 0 – 9 along the bottom from left to right.
Bingo, that’s a histogram! A histogram simply is a count of how often each number happens in a set of data.
