Digital Camera Extended Warranties: New York Times Asks: Buy Or Not Buy? New York Times writer Susan Ferraro examines the question of extended warranties for digital cameras and other electronics. In her article Susan points out one consumers experience with his digital camera gone bad. Mr. Zahniser had purchased a digital camera for $549 and along with it an extended warranty (The extra warranty was “$160 to $180,” or 29 percent to 32.7 percent of the product price).

Well, last October, the camera’s LCD screen turned black and blue. “You couldn’t see what you were taking a picture of,” Mr. Zahniser said.

Mr. Zahniser felt pretty confident the dealer would hand him a new camera… Nope, the dealer sent it in for repair, which he didn’t see again until January.

Camera works great and Mr. Zahniser doesn’t feel cheated.

At the Consumer Law Center in Boston, Stuart Rossman, a staff lawyer, likens the purchase of extra warranties to gambling. “I am always assuming that the dealer will have the advantage,” he said. He says it is better to create “your own repair fund,” though maintaining it, he admitted, can be difficult.
