Review Index – (updated 19 November’09)

PhotoclubAlpha
This camera definitely found a nook in the reviewers photo system, however he also indicated it probably would not be used a lot. As far as a lightweight travel camera it would be neat but he really would have preferred a low ISO of 100 rather than than the A550’s 200.

AlphaMountWorld
The folks at AMW have a hot cold attitude when it comes to the A550 and thought there was not a lot of room in between. On the hot side – the A550 got their attention because it has the capability to capture really good photographs, the Auto HDR is outstanding, live view has some cool functions and tools, the grip was nice, and above average performance. On the cold side – its menu system was inferior to the big brother Alphas, it just took WAY too much thought and concentration, low light capability was marginal, and the layout of the function buttons was dumb. Overall, they were not happy with the A550 and felt Sony could have done a better job.

PhotoReview (Editor’s Choice)
“Buy this camera if: – You want an affordable interchangeable-lens camera with fast autofocusing regardless of whether Live View or the viewfinder is used for shot composition – You want body-integrated image stabilisation that works with all lenses – You’d like a wide range of user-adjustable controls and functions – You require fast burst speeds and a generous buffer capacity – You could make use of the extended sensitivity range, despite its associated image noise.”
“The the A550 would be a fine choice for DSLR novices thanks to the many digicam-style features, but the great versatility and advanced functions make it just as suitable for photo enthusiasts.”

DPReview (Preview)
“Sadly, the much asked-for depth-of-field preview and mirror lock-up options have not returned. In both live view modes, the lens aperture is kept wide-open until the shot is taken, giving no representation of depth-of-field. And, although the mirror could theoretically be kept in the ‘up’ position, the new MF Check live view system still flips the mirror down and up again just as the shot is being taken, even when combined with self-timer. Whether this lack of mirror lock-up will make any difference to images won’t become apparent until we’ve tested the camera.”

Press Release

August 27, 2009: Two powerful, feature-packed DSLR cameras from Sony make it easier than ever to capture beautiful pictures, carefree family portraits, stunning holiday memories and action-packed scenes.

The DSLR-A500 (12.3 megapixels) and DSLR-A550 (14.2 megapixels) are packed with advanced Sony technology that combine the spontaneity and freedom of Live View shooting with generous possibilities to realise your creative vision.

At the heart of both cameras is a new Exmor™ CMOS sensor that ensures crisp low-noise images, packed with fine detail and vibrant colours. Sharing powerful on-chip noise reduction techniques with the full-frame DSLR-A900, this advanced sensor works with processing algorithms handled by the high-speed BIONZ™ engine to deliver premium images plus razor-sharp shooting responses. Dramatically reduced picture noise now allows super-sensitive shooting at up to ISO12800, allowing attractive results when shooting handheld in challenging situations like candlelit interiors.

Thanks to the powerful BIONZ image processing engine, Quick AF Live View now supports even speedier shooting responses with rapid, precise autofocus. This makes it easier than ever to capture beautifully relaxed portraits, dynamic action shots and more.

Powered by the BIONZ image processing engine, fast-moving action can now be captured effortlessly with faster continuous shooting speeds. Sustained shooting speeds of up to 4 fps can be achieved in Live View Mode, rising to 5 fps with the optical viewfinder. New Speed Priority mode on the DSLR-A550 raises the bar further still, shooting at an incredible 7 fps (with AF and AE setting maintained from the first frame ). It’s a powerful creative tool for capturing the nuances of a portrait subject’s changing expression or dynamic action sequences.

In a DSLR debut, Quick AF Live View now features Face Detection, prioritising AF on people’s faces and fine-tuning exposure/white balance settings for crisp, beautiful portraits with natural skin tones. Another DSLR first by Sony that’s already featured on many Cyber-shot™ models, Smile Shutter detects faces in Live View mode, automatically firing the shutter at just the right moment to capture happy, relaxed smiles.

A special new Manual Focus Check Live View mode assists with fine-tuning your composition. Low-noise images can be previewed directly from the CMOS sensor, allowing critical assessment of focus and fine detail, even in low light. The live image offers 100% field coverage, assisted by framing grid lines for precise composition. There’s also a selectable 7x/14x zoom function for a close-up confirmation of focus.

The A500 offers a crisp, high-contrast 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus screen with the same tilt range for clear, comfortable composition and reviewing shots.

The A550 features a superb (921k dot) 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD screen for critical focusing and photo-quality viewing with class-leading colour, contrast and detailing. The screen tilts up or down over a full 180 degree range, allowing uncompromised ‘free-angle’ live view shooting in any position. An ambient light sensor automatically boosts LCD brightness for extra screen clarity when surrounding light levels are high while both cameras also feature a clear, bright optical viewfinder with wide 95% field coverage for framing and focusing as an alternative to live view shooting.

Operation of both cameras is brilliantly simple, thanks to a redesigned on-screen interface that provides easy access to functions and settings during live view operation. A unique Graphic Display gives a clear, intuitive indication of how shutter speed and aperture adjustments will affect the final image.

Creative options are broadened by new Auto HDR mode that captures a huge range of shadow and highlight detail in landscapes, interiors and other scenes. Previously accessible only to enthusiasts equipped with a tripod and image processing software, HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a specialist technique that combines two frames shot at different exposure settings. The A500 and A550 use powerful algorithms to combine and optimise two successive frames in less than 10 seconds, correcting any misalignment between frames when shooting handheld. The result is a single HDR image emulating the huge natural tonal range of human vision – with no PC or tripod needed.

SteadyShot Inside Image Stabilization

The D-Range Optimiser featured in previous DSLR models has been enhanced for even better results with backlit portraits and other tricky high-contrast scenes. The powerful BIONZ engine now optimises image data in real time, processing brightness and contrast in individual areas of each exposure for balanced, natural looking results. Optimisation can also be selected manually from 5 processing levels.

A Smart Teleconvertor button instantly boosts image size by 1.4x or 2x to etend your camera’s zoom lens range further for frame-filling close-ups.

Like all DSLR cameras by Sony, both new models feature SteadyShot™ INSIDE, the powerful optical image stabiliser that cuts the effects of camera shake by up to 4 stops while shooting handheld with any lens.

After shooting, it’s easy to to connect both cameras to your BRAVIA™ television via HDMI (requires optional cable) for a stunning big-screen view of your shots. Compatible BRAVIA™ models automatically switch to PhotoTV HD mode for optimised still image playback with incredible detail, colour and clarity. BRAVIA Sync lets you control image slideshows in comfort via your TV’s remote.

Both cameras let you capture even more incredible moments without the worry of running out of power. The rechargeable battery pack of the A500 allows up to 1000 shots (CIPA test, approx. figure) – the highest capacity of any ? series digital SLR camera battery to date. The battery of the A550 delivers up to 950 shots from a single charge.

If you’re hungry for even more shooting stamina, the new VG-B50AM Vertical Control Grip holds up to two NP-FM500H batteries. This premium grip gives A500 users an incredible 2,000 shot maximum capacity (A550: 1,900 shots), with automatic switchover between batteries and accurate display of power remaining in % increments on the camera’s LCD. An additional shutter release and dual controls support comfortable, accurate shooting in either portrait or landscape positions.

Also, with Memory Stick™ at the heart of the Sony alpha, you have every advantage. The advanced Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX (4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB) is the perfect tool for continuous shooting mode, with the ideal combination of massive storage capacity and blisteringly fast operation. Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX 32GB will never miss the key shot because the number of pictures taken in 1 min is approx 270* photos (in RAW+JPEG/L (12M).Delivered with USB Adaptor, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX 32GB is ideal for users who want to transfer data in high speed: approx. 1700* pictures in L (12M) size at RAW+JPEG mode in 26 minutes.

The DSLR-A550 and DSLR-A500 digital SLR cameras are available from the end of October 2009.

*these figures are measured under certain conditions

Review Index – (updated 19 November’09)

GoodGearGuide
If you are looking for a camera that is small enough it can be comfortably packed around in your pocket or purse. Performance wise this camera is not what they would call a good all-round performer, however, for normal candids and party photography it would probably be a good choice.
“The TX1 is quite an impressive camera and when you take into account its better than normal capabilities such as sweep panorama, 10 frames per second shooting and multi-photo twilight mode are at the very least clever. Downside is it does have some quirks, it’s awkward to hold and the menu system is confusing to navigate and the lens is nothing to write home about.”

Cameras.uk (As compared to the Sony Cybershot DSC WX1)
“Looks as though it’s a draw between these two when it comes to photo quality and features. So the deciding factor is going to come down to which camera looks best to you or if you like a touch screen or not. But in this case whichever you choose our test result show you will probably be happy with either.”

Cameras.uk (As compared to the Canon Powershot SD980 IS/IXUS 200 IS)
“If you look at features I prefer the Sony Cybershot DSC TX1. Beyond that our speed tests puts the nail in the coffin so to speak because the TX1 wins hands down. Both cameras weigh in at about the same price but the Sony gives more bang for the buck.”

PhotographyBlog
“For its hefty price we would expect a lot more photographer friendly features which puts in an awkward position where the beginner will not be interested because of price and more experienced shooters will be turned off by the lack of features. However, the TX1 produces outstanding image results, it’s too bad it could not strike a fair balance between style, price, and features. All that aside this camera is worth taking a second look at if you’re after the best point-and-shoot.”

CNET.au
“The TX1 is a great advancement in the compact camera sector, better low-light ability and photo quality instead of more megapixels. It still has some ground to make up relative to photo processing and a better lens, but still, this camera is one of the most slender, most well defined bodies we have seen in a long time.”
“Oh, the Sony TX1 is a Dave’s Pick all right, let’s get that out of the way right now. It has the technical wonders required to earn one, starting with the new Exmor R sensor’s increased light sensitivity, the responsive widescreen, touch-sensitive LCD, and some innovative shooting modes.”

Wired
“Good: Thin and light with an impressive touchscreen and amazing low-light capabilities. A fast 10-fps shutter is perfect for sports, kids, animals and the occasional fleeing celebrity. Cool new features like Hand-Held Twilight and Sweep Panorama modes work like a charm.

Not so Good: You pay big bucks for such a small cam: Price tag skates close to 4 Benjamins. Confusing menus can make it frustrating to change settings on the fly.”
“This pocket camera is very different to most of its competitors. It has a number of exciting features such as a 10 frames per second burst mode, High Definition movies, sweep panorama and a handheld twilight mode that aims to reduce noise once lighting levels fall. It you are on the lookout for a digital camera packed with the latest features then take a look at the Sony Cybershot DSC TX1.”

Digital Trends
“We have to look at this camera as a version-0.9 offering. Although it’s almost fully developed, it’s not all the way there. Sweep Panorama and Handheld Twilight are really good features, as is the 10-frames-per-second shooting. Yet colors were uneven, and focusing isn’t as good or accurate as we’d like. Given these issues, this one is hard to recommend. Hopefully, the implementation of Exmor R technology in the WX1 or future models will resolve these issues.”

Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 5, 2009 – Sony today announced two new Cyber-shot® cameras (DSC-TX1 and DSC-WX1 models) that provide unprecedented advances in low-light performance with approximately twice the sensitivity of cameras with traditional image sensors.

These Cyber-shot cameras are the first to employ Sony’s new “Exmor R” back illuminated CMOS sensor technology to improve shooting in low-light scenarios, enhancing image clarity and drastically reducing grain.

“With these new “Exmor R” CMOS sensor cameras, Sony has vastly improved the customer experience for taking pictures with digital still cameras in low-light scenarios,” said Phil Lubell, director of the digital imaging business at Sony Electronics. “We’ve all taken pictures in dimly lit areas, where the results were grainy and unclear. By redesigning the way these cameras capture light, Sony is leading the industry by creating this easy way to take amazingly clear, vibrant photos in low lighting scenarios.”

“Exmor R” Sensor Optimizes Low-Light Performance
Conventional image sensor architecture has required wires and other circuit elements to be positioned above the light sensitive photo-diodes, limiting the imager’s light gathering capability. Positioning these elements behind the photo-diodes, Sony’s “Exmor R” image sensors can gather more light, resulting in approximately twice the sensitivity compared to conventional sensors.

To further extend low-light shooting performance, the TX1 and WX1 cameras incorporate the hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur multi-shot modes introduced in Sony’s breakthrough Cyber-shot DSC-HX1. Using “Exmor R” CMOS sensor’s high speed, these modes capture six separate images in less than a second and utilize Sony’s BIONZ™ processor to combine the shots into a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise.

Combining the “Exmor R” technology with hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur modes delivers a breakthrough in low-light photography. Users can now capture images of stunning detail and low noise in scenes with no more than candlelight—without flash or the need of a tripod.

Innovative Sweep Panorama™ and High-Speed Shooting
In addition to their breakthrough low light performance, these new cameras also include Sony’s Sweep Panorama and 10 frames per second burst shooting features, which were introduced with the Sony® DSC-HX1 camera. The TX1 and WX1 cameras offer these features in smaller, more compact bodies that match nearly any unique style.

Capturing wide landscapes is as easy as “press and sweep.” Sweep Panorama mode lets you reach beyond the traditional wide-angle lens and capture breathtaking shots. Using the high-speed “Exmor R” CMOS sensor, the cameras shoot continuously while you sweep across the scene. Using the BIONZ imaging processor, they automatically stitch the pictures together to create one stunning panoramic photo.

The TX1 and WX1 Cyber-shot models can take up to 185 and 256-degree panorama shots respectively in one easy press-and-sweep motion with an image size of 7152 x 1080 (ultra wide horizontal).

Advanced Technology and Compact Design
While the HX1 camera is a well-rounded solution for customers who are looking for high-zoom and speed in a smaller size than a DSLR, the TX1 and WX1 cameras are made for an audience that wants advanced technology in an even more compact design.

With its slim profile of just 16.5mm, the 10.2 mega-pixel TX1 offers streamlined, distinguished curves for a sophisticated look appealing to the fashion-oriented who are also looking for great performance.

This model features a new operation on the touch panel that lets you scroll through images with an effortless “flick” of your finger and directly access menus on the 3-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus™ display.

If full manual control of your camera is not high on your list then the WX1 would be an excellent choice. It comes loaded with a lot of innovative “here, let me do it for you” modes, which can make the process of taking regular pictures, panoramas, and low light images a lot easier and more fun. Looks can be deceiving, while the WX1 looks like all the competition it delivers really nice results and it’s a lot of fun to boot.
The WX1 impressed the reviewer. They indicated the average person just would not expect a compact with so much technology, but not so with this little camera. Packed with lots of shooting modes this camera makes the photographic experience fun and memorable.

DCResource
The reviewer thought the photo quality of the WX1 was disappointing and had hoped that in this particular area it would shine. Even at its lowest ISO setting of 160 the pictures exhibited detail loss, major shadow noise and near the edge of the frame there was blurring. When they pumped up the ISO to 200 – 800 it did a little better than similar cameras, but for example the Fuji FinePix F200EXR does way better. It also had a tendency to overexpose and blast out the highlights. All-in-all this camera just didn’t capture their attention or even hold it for that matter. Your money would be better off spent on something else.
“This is not the fastest camera on the block. When you start the camera up it is poky enough that it can grind on your nerves, and when you shut the camera off it takes way too long also. However, its autofocus speed impressed us, plus it does make you select macro for shooting close ups, the WX1 does it on the fly, nice. The camera is a mixed bag while we liked its low light ability and the sweep panorama is cool but the above mentioned flaws keep it from getting a perfect rating.”
“I feel the WX1 is high on the list of top consumer compact digital cameras. Warning – unless you are willing to admit that a camera is super smart and you can trust it to do the job without your help you will probably love the WX1. On the flip side. Unless you agree to switch the mode dial off the full auto selection, you probably don’t want this camera. With a ton of special modes the WX1 stands above the crowd.”
“The Sony Cybershot DSC WX1 has features you don’t see on a typical, pocket camera. With features like a very high speed burst mode, a sweep panorama mode for landscapes and cityscapes, and a High Definition movies mode this camera definitely sets a high standard. Image quality is also very good.”
“Sony has used a sensor found in its high-end camcorders and a lens based on those from its Alpha dSLRs, should you expect excellent photo quality? It certainly sounds reasonable. But, in the end, the fun-to-use DSC-WX1 is still a point-and-shoot camera, capable of above-average photos under challenging conditions where most other snappers in its class fail.”
“There was good detail in the images, but the reds and blues were clearly oversaturated. But the Sony WX1’s 5x G lens with optical image stabilization wasn’t really a liability. In fact, its 24mm wide-angle focal length was a boon in such a small camera. For its extreme low light capability in such a remarkably small package, the Sony WX1 still earns a Dave’s Pick”
“So does this settle the “What camera should I buy?” question? Unfortunately, not quite. You’ve still got some agonizing to do. The Sony WX1 is nearly irresistible for its low-light abilities, HD video, sweep panorama and burst mode. Still, in good light, a Canon PowerShot SD880 IS still offers better color and sharpness.”
“Just because Sony used a sensor and lens based on those from its Alpha digital SLRs, should you expect SLR-quality photos? I don’t think so. While the WX1 is capable of producing excellent snapshots, it’s still a point-and-shoot camera. It’s just a really, really nice one with several fun and useful features.”
Press

The 10.2 mega-pixel WX1 camera has a 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display and is just over three quarters of an inch thin—an ideal choice for DSLR owners who also want to carry a compact, high performance digital still camera.

The WX1 camera features a Sony G lens with an extraordinary wide angle 24-120mm 5x optical zoom. This lens’ f/2.4 maximum aperture offers nearly twice the light gathering capability of conventional lenses, and works together with the “Exmor R” imager and low-light shooting modes to provide low-light photography beyond the abilities of other compact cameras.

Tech Savvy Cameras

Pet mode is a new Sony feature that minimizes blur when shooting moving pets. This new mode also reduces glowing pet red-eye.

Additionally, the cameras have technologies Sony Cyber-shot customers have come to expect. These include Smile Shutter™ technology that automatically captures a smile, dynamic range optimization (DRO) that improves exposure and contrast, intelligent Auto Focus that captures fleeting moments and HD video capability that records HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format.

With HD video capability, these cameras record HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format for stunning large-screen home movie playback. You can record up to 29 minutes (or up to 2GB file size) in 720p format.

Pricing and Availability
The TX1 camera will be available in silver, gray, pink and blue this September for about $380. The WX1 camera will be available in black this October for about $350. Pre-sales will start in August. The cameras and a range of accessories will be available online

Image quality suffers in the W220 and falls short of the mark. Regardless of ISO setting there is digital noise and although the camera tries to adjust for noise issue it does not effectively do so. And in to this unimpressive edge definition and color fringing and you end up with a camera that overall misses the mark.
“Overall this is a good a camera with features that most people will like. There were some things I didn’t like; for instance the Dynamic Range function can increase the digital noise in pretty ugly ways. Another negative is Sony memory sticks are required which means more money. bottom line – interesting features, photo quality is good, and the price is pretty competitive which ultimately means it receives our recommendation.”
Sony has always had great products that live up to their name and this one is no exception.”
“The W220’s photo quality is good, particularly at ISO 200 and below. Viewed at full size, there’s off-color noise visible at all ISOs, but it’s least noticeable at lower ISOs. Photos are still good at ISO 400, but soften a bit from noise reduction.”
“The Sony Cybershot DSC W220 is not a bad digital camera. I found the camera easy to use and it has a low shutter lag time compared to other cameras in its class. When it comes to picture quality it has some tough competition and does not quite match up to some of its competitors.”
“The Sony W220 was a camera that I warmed to the more I used it. I initially was a bit put off by its menu structure, and its very smooth skin made me fear losing my grip on it at an inconvenient moment. Viewed 1:1 on-screen, its images look a little soft, even at its lowest ISO. As I shot with it and made prints from its images, though, I came to like it more and more.”

Press Release

LAS VEGAS (CES Booth #14200), Jan. 7, 2009 – Sony today announced a new 12-megapixel Cyber-shot® camera (model DSC-W220) that combines powerful imaging features with intelligence to make taking great pictures easy.

The entry-level W model has features that until now were only found in high-end models (DSC-W150 and DSC-W170), including Intelligent Scene Recognition and Dynamic Range Optimizer.

“This camera is perfect for customers who forget to change settings to the right scene mode, do not have the time to change settings or do not know what setting to use” said Karim Noblecilla, senior product marketing manager in the Digital Imaging Division at Sony Electronics. “It chooses the correct scene mode, which makes it easy to use.”

Intelligent Scene Recognition automatically recognizes a total of five scenes—twilight portrait, twilight, twilight using a tripod, backlight and backlight portrait. It optimizes camera settings for shooting situations, taking an additional shot in low and bright light scenarios when there are two different approaches to shooting a scene so users can choose which picture they would like to keep.

The camera’s Dynamic Range Optimizer uses a sophisticated algorithm to determine the best exposure and contrast settings in almost any shooting environment, giving images a natural look with clearer details that match what you see with your naked eye.

The W220 camera has a 2.7-inch LCD screen (measured diagonally) and Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar 4X optical zoom lens with 30 millimeter (equivalent) wide angle view. It includes Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization to minimize blur without affecting picture quality. Sony’s Smile Shutter™ technology automatically captures a smile the moment it happens. You can use the adult or child priority setting when shooting scenes containing both adults and children, and the camera will distinguish one face from another.

Bundled Picture Motion Browser (PMB) software allows you to quickly organize images on a compatible PC and upload images to the Web. You can search and organize images by event, smile or face, including children and infants. Then you can display them in calendar or chronological views organized into folders. Of course, you can also share, print or save your scrapbooks.

Images can be stored and managed on both the camera’s 15MB internal memory and an optional Memory Stick® media card. The camera’s high definion output and HD slideshow with music let you share images on HDTV sets, including Sony’s BRAVIA® flat-panel LCD models (HDMI cable not included).

Pricing and Availability
The DSC-W220 camera is available in silver, black, pink and blue for about $190. The camera and a range of accessories, including new carrying cases (models LCS-CSVA, LCS-CSVB and LCS-CSVC), can be purchased online at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail ), at military base exchanges and at authorized dealers nationwide.

“There really is no photo situation this camera would not be able to handle. If you are feeling inspired it’s options lets you push the creative envelope even further. the 10x is very cool to use and anything less seems dinky. If you travel you might want to take a close look at this one because for such a small camera the photo quality is about as good as you are going to get. With no hesitation we give it our recommendation.”
“The H20 takes great photos at lower sensitivities and you can also use the optical zoom when filming video – which is pretty rare for cameras in this price bracket. It has a wide range of auto exposure modes, fast and accurate autofocus and a very easy menu system, which makes this camera ideal for auto shooters. It’s is an great camera that combines big telephoto pull, easy to use, manual exposure control and HD video in a small form and it won’t break the bank either – because it has all the right features and makes great pictures it receives our full recommendation.”
“It’s well-designed, comfortable to use, and has a good mix of features including three types of automatic shooting modes and a manual mode if you want to tinker with shutter speeds and apertures (though there are only four available). The menu system is refined from other Sony cameras simplifying use. And while its photos are not stellar, they’re very good for its class–and for Sony.”
“This is a neat, compact digital camera offering extra zoom. Picture quality is good and the movie mode is advanced too. I like the design of the camera and there is a manual exposure mode as well.”
“If it weren’t for the lack of wide angle and quick access to ISO and exposure compensation, we would be tempted to award our highest ‘Essential!’ rating to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20. With these few deficiencies, we feel more comfortable giving it our second-best rating, ‘Highly Recommended’, which is well deserved and a step up from the ‘Recommended’ award we gave to its predecessor last year.”
“The main problem with the H20 is that it lacks a wide-angle zoom. Otherwise though, its responsiveness, handling and controls make it a great camera to use. It’s very effective at full zoom too, which is where many rival compact superzooms struggle. Finally, the rather good HD movie mode is a major selling point on its own.”
Press

Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 17, 2009 – Sony today announced five new Cyber-shot® cameras (models DSC-T900, DSC-T90, DSC-W290, DSC-W230 and DSC-H20) that make it easier to take the best pictures without changing settings.

The intelligent auto mode, available on the T900, T90, W290 and H20 models helps “think” for you and detect scene conditions then adjust settings, especially in difficult lighting scenarios.

“This camera provides a seamless experience,” said Karim Noblecilla, senior product marketing manager in Sony Electronics’ Digital Imaging Division. “You can go from a walk in the park to taking pictures of a flower and then back to beautiful landscapes or indoor birthday parties, and the camera will know what to do to get the best shot.”

Additionally, intelligent auto mode enhances pictures of faces to capture natural skin tones, identifies when your subject has closed eyes, and helps reduce blur without damaging image quality.

Sony has combined three key technologies to make these cameras smarter.

Intelligent scene recognition (iSCN) detects up to eight scenes, recognizing objects, faces and lighting conditions (e.g. low light and backlight). Then, in one-thirtieth of a second, it changes the setting to get the best shot.

Face detection registers up to eight faces; adjusts focus, exposure, white balance and flash; and detects motion. This intelligent camera combines face detection with iSCN, featuring blink detection. It takes two pictures and saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are the least shut.

The W290 and H20 cameras also have selected-face memory, allowing you to zero in on the main subject’s face. The next time the camera detects the priority face in the frame, it will automatically focus on that person.

The W230 model has iSCN that detects up to five scene conditions, face detection with child and adult priority, and the Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization feature. You can turn on these features in auto mode to make the W230 camera intelligent.

All of the new cameras have the Optical SteadyShot feature and Smile Shutter™ technology. The Optical SteadyShot image stabilization feature helps prevent blur due to camera shake without impacting image quality. Equipped with Sony’s Smile Shutter technology, these cameras automatically capture a smile the moment it happens.

Another advanced feature that sets these cameras apart from most digital still cameras is iSCN advanced. Noblecilla said the iAuto feature increases the chances of getting a great shot. You can also set up iSCN advanced as a permanent feature. When the scene has difficult lighting such as backlight or low light, the camera will take two shots within a fraction of a second using two alternative settings, so you can select which picture you prefer.

HD Movies

The W290, H20, T90 and T900 cameras feature wide and full-screen 720p movie recording at 30 frames per second in fine, standard and VGA recording modes. The 720p movie resolution is three times higher than VGA movies.

The movie function is based on the MPEG4 codec for video compression. Plus the T900 has a stereo microphone. Benefits of the format include high-quality video as well as PC-friendly files that are easy to download, upload and share.

Style and Color

With a compact design for easy on-the-go portability, the DSC-T90 and DSC-T900 cameras are 15 millimeters and 16.3 millimeters thin, respectively. 2009 line of W and T colors come in a pallet of colors to match your unique style.

Powerful Core Features

The W230 camera has 12.1 megapixels, 4x (30mm) Carl Zeiss® Vario Tessar optical zoom lens and 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen. The W290 model adds a 5x wide (28mm) optical zoom lens.

The T90 camera also has 12.1 megapixels and a 4x Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar optical zoom and 3-inch (measured diagonally) wide touch-panel LCD screen. The T900 camera adds a larger 3.5-inch Xtra Fine LCD screen that delivers high resolution images (921,600 dots), which is approximately four times higher than conventional LCD screens.

The H20 model features 10.1 megapixels, a 10x Carl Zeiss optical zoom lens and a 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen.

Easy navigation

Sony has simplified the display of options on most of these cameras to make it easier for customers to use them. The most commonly used features include shooting mode, zoom, play, delete and Smile Shutter. These are available at a click or touch of a button. More sophisticated users can select other shooting modes or change the settings using the menu button.

Tools to Edit, Archive and Share

These cameras are equipped with tools to edit, archive and share. They have in-camera retouch features like red-eye correction and image management to easily sort through thousands of photos in calendar view or album view. “Hey, there is no question about it this is one cool looking camera and it attracts a lot of attention. However, it is a tough camera to learn to use and the image quality is not so good. We still recommend it but just be willing to spend some time leaning how to use it.”
“The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 is a fine camera to pop in your pocket and have with you all the time for quick snapshots and video clips. Although it has a number of flaws, and is truly an aim-and-forget camera, you’ll be happy with the results, and won’t have to think twice about them. We only wish Sony would cut the price of the optional HD video cable.”
“Buy this camera if: – You’re looking for a small, ultra-slim snapshot camera. – You’re happy to use the monitor for shot composition and can work with touchscreen controls. – You’d enjoy some of the post-capture, in-camera editing functions. – You want to shoot widescreen high-definition video clips “
“The Sony DSC-T90’s main problem is with image noise at higher ISO settings. Like most compact cameras, it will only do its best work below ISO 800. Images at ISO 1600 and ISO 3200 are especially poor with very little fine image detail visible. At ISO 400 and below the Sony DSC-T90 shines, taking consistently good quality images. We especially liked the vibrant colors, which were the most accurate and precise that we’ve seen from an ultra-slim camera in a while. “
“The Sony Cyber-shot T90 is a fancy, ultra-slim camera with a touchscreen and many bells and whistles (adult/child face detection priority anyone?), but with crummy ergonomics, user interface and just tolerable image quality. If all you care about is the Sony brand name, design and/or gimmicky features, then the Cyber-shot T90 is clearly a good candidate (and I have no other words for you). For those who actually care about photographic features and image quality, take a look around at similarly priced cameras instead.”
“The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 is de?nitely one of the most innovative cameras on offer. If you can ?nd it for less than the quoted price, then you’ll have found a true bargain.”
“All told, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 is a well-rounded choice. It’s a good performer in terms of image quality, speed, ease of use, and build—and its 16:9 LCD provides well-above-par experience in both shooting and playback modes. Every Sony touch-screen camera I’ve ever tested had dismal battery life, and the T90 was no different; it required multiple charges during my week of testing.”
“The T90’s size also means that you’re more likely to carry it around with you and so have it ready for those photo opportunities you might otherwise miss. And any device that encourages the taking of more photographs than one might otherwise can’t be all bad. Ultimately the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 is best (or possibly kindest) viewed as a premium quality snapshot model. Treat it as such and you won’t be disappointed.”
“This little guy offers amazing performance, loads of user-friendly exposure options and technologies as well as good overall image quality. “Small enough to carry in a pocket at all times, the T90 suggests itself as the ideal purchase for the happy snapper wanting better quality results than a camera phone will presently provide. It looks good too, even though Sony’s designers seem to be resting on their laurels rather than attempting to enhance the range further and little has changed from previous incarnations.”
“Sadly we experienced a lackluster performance all throughout the castle from the pink compact. Colors were flat, noise levels were high even in bright light, fringing was two-stepping along borders every chance it was given and low light’s only savior was the finicky flash.”

You can group favorites and filter by baby, adult, all faces or smiles. The PhotoMusic feature offers an HD slideshow mode with transitions and music for viewing on the camera or television.

The HD output feature lets you view images in high-defintion, although HDMI and component cables are not included. The T900 camera is bundled with a camera stand that allows HDMI connectivity, but the cable is not included.

Bundled Picture Motion Browser (PMB) software allows you to quickly organize images on a compatible PC and upload images to the Web. You can search and organize images by event, smile or face, including children and infants. Then you can display them in calendar or chronological views organized into folders.

“If you have a lot of Minolta lenses then this camera should be high on your”must take a look at” list. What we like: Photo quality is outstanding. Because of the quality of detail you’ve got lots of room to crop. To see the advantage of the larger sensor it is only necessary to take a group photo and see the detail preserved in every face. What we didn’t like: It is a big and heavy camera.”
“This camera is a great bargain in terms of resolution, versatility and reasonable speed as well as the built-in image stabilizer, excellent viewfinder and high-res LCD. In my estimation, the benefits provided by Intelligent Preview make Live View unnecessary in a semi-pro camera. This DSLR may have fewer custom functions than its competitors, but it’s not lacking a single important feature.”
“From my time with this camera, I would very much recommend the A850. Fort such a low price point for full frame, it is a real tempting alternative to a crop-sensor camera like the Canon 7D or Nikon D300s.”
“Buy this camera if: – You want a solidly-built, competitively-priced DSLR camera with a weather-resistant body and professional-standard controls and functions – You want the advantages of a 35mm-sized image sensor – You want effective body-integrated image stabilisation – You are prepared to pay premium prices for Sony’s G-series and Carl Zeiss lenses.”
“It’s hard to call a $1,999 DSLR a great deal, but this is one. It’s the cheapest 24.6MP full-frame model available, $700 less than the Sony A900 and six grand less than the 24.5MP Nikon D3x. The camera requires a serious commitment in dollars. It also demands you spend the time learning its intricacies. We had it for just a few weeks and really enjoyed every minute of it.”
“All in all, the Sony A850 makes high-quality digital photography more accessible to an even broader public than before. And from this, the future Sony Alpha photographer benefits directly. Perhaps the Sony Alpha 850 is the first of a new generation of affordable high resolution full-frame DSLR cameras!”
“The A850 isn’t the camera for every photographer considering market choice and some lack of features, but I’m willing to bet that at this price point it will attract a lot more attention than not, especially to those who prefer a more traditional 35mm format. Simply stated, the Alpha A850 is a real winner, and will be well documented in the future as the first near pro quality full frame DSLR that broke a serious price barrier.”
“If you want the most pixels in a small package at the best price on the market, the Sony A850 is where you’ll find it. Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II beats the Sony A850 in high-ISO capability and (slightly) in size and weight, and offers HD video recording as well, but at a price point that’s $700 higher. Nikon’s D3x offers the same resolution, but at a cost literally 4x that of the A850. If you’re into landscapes or architecture, or need a studio camera with enormous resolution at a relatively budget price, the Sony A850 would make a great choice.”

Luminous Landscape (Preview)
“Sony has clearly decided that they want a major slice of the DSLR pie and are pulling out a lot of the stops to make this happen. With the new A850 they are taking no prisoners, undercutting their only real competitor, Canon’s 5D MKII, by 25% in terms of price. Few observers thought we’d see a 25MP full-frame camera for under $2,000 this soon, but I can’t see anyone complaining about it, except maybe the competition.”

Press Release

Weybridge, 27th August 2009: The new DSLR-A850 from Sony offers serious photo enthusiasts a step up to the creative possibilities of full-frame imaging at a compelling price.

Ruggedly built for unflinching pro-style handling and performance, the A850 shares the same 24.6 megapixel sensor and virtually all features of the flagship DSLR-A900, introduced last year. Like its full-frame sibling, the A850 fully exploits the creative possibilities of the ? family of lenses that includes premium full-frame optics from Carl Zeiss, plus five high-performance G Lens models.

At the heart of the A850 is a full frame 24.6 effective megapixel Exmor™ CMOS sensor that captures flawless, detail-packed images with vibrant, lifelike colours and fine textures.

The purity of high-resolution image data captured by the full-frame sensor is optimised by two-stage noise reduction in both analogue and digital domains. Noise reduction is first applied as the full-frame sensor converts light to electronic signals. Dual BIONZ™ image engines process large amounts of digital data, applying finely-tuned noise reduction during image processing to deliver pictures with extremely high level of sharpness and minimal noise level. This combination of high native sensor resolution and powerful noise control techniques ensures superlative image quality, even at high sensitivity settings up to a maximum ISO 6400 (with expanded ISO range).

The camera’s optical glass pentaprism viewfinder aids accurate shot composition, offering an extremely bright view with minimal distortion and a generous 98% field coverage.

Serious enthusiasts will also prize the camera’s fast, high-accuracy autofocus system that provides excellent framing freedom while making it easier to achieve optimum focus with moving subjects. The 9-point AF system is supplemented by 10 focus assist points to assist subject detection, improved out-of-focus detection to reduce focus hunting and a dedicated F2.8 sensor for enhanced AF accuracy with wide aperture lenses.

Shots can be viewed on the large, high contrast 3.0-inch Xtra Fine LCD that offers an exceptionally high resolution (921k dot) for critical evaluation – even outdoors or in bright ambient light.

For greater creative control, an Intelligent Preview function indicates the effects of exposure, white balance, and D-Range Optimiser adjustments prior to shooting. This Preview is invaluable when composing complex scenes that may typically combine multiple light sources with different colour temperatures.

Touching the Fn button switches the display to Quick Navi mode, allowing convenient one-handed adjustment of key shooting parameters. A secondary backlit LCD panel on the top of the camera body gives useful confirmation of major settings, even when the main LCD is turned off.

In common with all other DSLR cameras from Sony, the A850 features SteadyShot INSIDE™. This in-body optical stabilisation system delivers up to 4 steps of anti-shake correction with all compatible lenses, opening up even greater creative possibilities when shooting handheld.

Like its full-frame sibling, the A850 is ruggedly built for dependable performance in gruelling conditions with a high-tensile aluminium chassis and all-magnesium alloy body shell. Viewfinder, card slots, controls and other sensitive areas are protected from dust and moisture by rubber seals. In addition, a dual anti-dust system guards the full-frame sensor from the effects of dust entering the body during lens exchange.

The supplied high-capacity InfoLITHIUM™ Battery Pack (NP-FM500H) delivers power for up to 880 shots (approx.) per charge. Battery levels can be monitored in precise 1% increments, cutting uncertainty about remaining shooting time.

The camera can be connected to your BRAVIA™ or any HD TV (requires optional HDMI cable) for a big-screen view of your shots. On-screen image quality is optimised for superbly lifelike reproduction on BRAVIA™ models supporting PhotoTV HD. On-screen playback can be controlled via an optional remote commander.

The choice of full-frame lenses to complement the A850 is enhanced with the new 28-75mm F2.8 SAM. This compact, easy-to-carry lens is ideal for photo enthusiasts looking to add a bright, general purpose zoom to their collection of full-frame optics. Delivering excellent imaging quality at an accessible price, it’s the first zoom for the Alpha range offering a wide F2.8 aperture over its entire zoom range. Ideal for day-to-day shooting tasks, its bright maximum aperture makes the 28-75mm F2.8 SAM particularly valuable for interior scenes and available-light portraits.

The DSLR-A850 full-frame digital SLR camera is available from September 2009 and the 28-75mm lens will be available from November 2009.

Review Index – (updated 15 October’09)

DigitalCameraReview
“In terms of across-the-board shooting speed and outright image quality, a large-sensor, interchangeable-lens camera wins hands down. And given that the HX1, which lists at nearly $500, will set you back nearly as much as a basic SLR kit, potential buyers may have good reason to think twice.”

ImagingResource
“I had a ball with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1. Right out of the box you can get great results with the 20x optical zoom Sony G lens coupled to an Exmor CMOS sensor with sensitivity to ISO 3,200 using Programmed Auto, intelligent Auto, or Easy mode. But you can also get cute with Aperture and Shutter priority modes and Manual mode before you tap into some unique shooting capabilities.”

DigitalCameraInfo
“This cameras features actually do what they say: the panorama mode takes great panoramic shots quickly, and the hand held low light mode also produces much sharper and more attractive low light shots. Neither mode is perfect, though; there are definite glitches in the panoramas. The HX1 also produced attractive still images and video; both had good color and plenty of detail.”
“Ultimately, though, a camera is only as good as the images it can produce. The Sony DSC-HX1 is exceptionally fast and has some slick, fun technology working for it, but its images failed to measure up to our expectations for a $500 camera.”
“It is rather hard to describe such a complex – yet fairly easy-to-use – and you are encouraged to read our detailed findings in the Ease of Use section of this review. To sum it up, the Sony HX1 is certainly not ‘the’ perfect camera, but it’s one of the best all-rounders we’ve seen, and as such, it comes Highly Recommended by us.”

RegHardware
“Apart from lacking a RAW image option and the less than Full HD video, the DSC-HX1 offers a pretty good spec. Video is fine if you’re taking shots of slow moving objects, but performance suffers if your subject is fast-moving. But overall, we liked the DSC-HX1 and if a super zoom compact is on your wish list, you might find that this camera offers the right set of features and performance for the price.”

Photo Review
“Buy this camera if – You’re looking for a well-built, long-zoom digicam with good wide-angle coverage, plenty of user-adjustable controls and image stabilization – You use the monitor for shot composition and enjoy shooting with the camera close to the subject, low to the ground or above your head. (The tilting LCD makes this easy – You find the Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight and Anti Motion Blur shooting modes enticing – You’d enjoy shooting HD video clips with stereo sound.”

Camera Labs
“As detailed above, Canon’s PowerShot SX1 IS offers more traditional photographic features and better quality at the lowest sensitivities, but if you want or need faster than 4fps continuous shooting, then the HX1 is currently the only affordable choice. A number of annoyances or limitations listed near the start of this page prevent the HX1 from earning our top award, but it still easily comes Recommended – and once again if capturing very fast action is your priority, its combination of a long zoom, fast AF and supremely quick continuous shooting is unrivaled at the price.”

Digital Trends
“It’s hard to live up to great expectations, but as far as we’re concerned, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 did just that. Is it a perfect camera? Hardly, since one hasn’t been invented. Yet this camera does many things well: shoots quickly and accurately with minimal fuss, has a powerful wide-angle zoom, offers manual options and takes fine HD movies. Although it doesn’t shoot RAW files, don’t forget sweep panorama, one of the neatest tricks we’ve seen in a long time.”

GoodGearGuide
“Our overall impression of this camera is that it’s a little underdone. It has plenty of useful features — the long zoom, the panorama mode, the ability to record HD video, the excellent viewfinder, the manual controls — but its pictures lack definition when viewed at their full size, and its design needs to be improved.”

DPInterface
“This camera looks great on paper and indeed has some great features but has too many limitations that put a stop to all that potential fun you should be able to have with the camera. The thrill of having a full-resolution 10 FPS burst mode without laying down $4000-$5000 for high end digital SLR is appealing. Oh well, maybe next time Canon.”
“This is one of the most advanced digital cameras you can find. Picture quality is very good and is backed up with a stunning set of features. If you are serious about photography, but do not want to step up to a Digital SLR then take a look at the Cybershot DSC HX1.”
“There are a few issues with the HX1, including no RAW format support, a huge amount of grain when your crank up the ISO and an LCD screen that isn’t quite full tile, but the HX1 is an easy to use, feature-packed addition to the superzoom camera market that will not disappoint.”

DCResource
“The DSC-HX1’s image quality is disappointing. Like Sony’s other recent point-and-shoot cameras, the HX1 suffers from too much noise reduction. This smudges low contrast details such as grass, hair, trees, sand, and water, and also gives the image as a whole a soft, fuzzy appearance. Lowering the noise reduction helps a bit, though photos will then have a more traditional grain style of noise. The HX1 also has quite a bit of purple fringing (so much for the fancy lens), and highlight clipping is an issue, as well.”
“Tradeoffs abound in Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 megazoom: though it’s fast and has some really novel, useful features, it just doesn’t deliver the photo quality expected for its class.”
“Looking at the market as a whole, with an emphasis on image quality, we just cannot give the Sony DSC-HX1 our highest recommendation, but it’s certainly worth consideration if you’re looking for a superzoom compact and can live with the inevitable image quality compromises.”
“Containing a six-blade aperture, the G lens produces beautifully defocused backgrounds with a soft, natural feel. A-spherical lens elements and elements made from extra-low dispersion glass combine to minimize chromatic aberration common to high-magnification lenses.”

Press Release

LAS VEGAS, March 2, 2009 – Sony is spotlighting its first digital still camera to feature sweep panorama technology here at the Photo Marketing Association confab. The new HX1 Cyber-shot model can take 224-degree panorama shots in one easy press-and-sweep motion.

It is also the company’s first Cyber-shot camera to use the exclusive 1/2.4-inch Exmor™ CMOS sensor technology. This technology allows it to achieve burst speeds of 10 frames per second at full 9.1 megapixel resolution in continuous burst mode.

Setting it apart from most digital still cameras, which use an electronic shutter to achieve high speed, the HX1 unit has a mechanical shutter that helps reduce distortion when shooting a moving subject.

Compared to images shot with traditional sensors, the HX1 model takes clearer images with about 50 percent less noise when in handheld twilight or anti-blur modes. It is also the first Cyber-shot camera to include a Sony G lens and 1080p HD movie clip recording capabilities.

“Traditional CMOS sensor technology provides higher shutter speeds, but we are using what we call an Image3 system that combines the best image, sensor and processor,” said Karim Noblecilla, senior product marketing manager in Sony Electronics’ Digital Imaging Division. “By combining this sensor with a high-quality Sony G lens and powerful BIONZ™ processor, we are able to create solutions beyond fast speed that helps consumers get better pictures.”

Incorporating on-chip A/D conversion, which minimizes image degradation that can occur during analogue processing, Noblecilla said the Exmor CMOS sensor delivers outstanding images, reduces noise and can continuously shoot at a high speeds.

Clear Images in Low Light or for Moving Subjects

Compared to cameras with traditional sensors, the HX1 model has two scene modes that significantly reduce noise. Using the high-speed shutter Exmor CMOS sensor technology, the new model takes six shots within a fraction of a second. Combined with the power of the BIONZ imaging processor, it immediately superimposes them into one picture. The camera calculates the position of objects in each frame and composes the sharpest picture possible, resulting in clearer, sharper images.

The two modes that use this functionality include hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur. For difficult shots in low light, the hand-held twilight mode results in clearer and sharper pictures without the need of a tripod. Anti-motion blur uses High ISO to reduce blur especially in dimly lit environments.

To reduce blur, the camera detects if a person or object is moving, or if the camera is shaking, which is likely when taking a telephoto shot. When it superimposes the images, the camera captures the moving subject or object from one of the six shots. It takes, combines and composes the rest of the image using the six shots. This reduces blur on the main subject and results in a sharp, clear background.

Sweep Panorama Technology

Capturing wide landscapes, church spires or skyscrapers is as easy as “press and sweep.” Sweep panorama mode lets you reach beyond the traditional wide-angle lens and capture breathtaking shots. With wide and ultra-wide settings and horizontal or vertical directions, sweep panorama mode can take up to 224-degree horizontal or 154-degree vertical shots.

Using the fast-speed Exmor CMOS sensor, the camera continuously shoots full-resolution images at a high speed. Using the BIONZ imaging processor, it automatically stitches the pictures together to create one stunning panoramic photo. The maximum resolution is 7152 x 1080 (ultra wide horizontal).

“This panorama mode is so seamless that it removes the guess work,” Noblecilla said. “The camera indicates where you are in the degree range, so you know how wide you can shoot and stitches the photos automatically. It calculates and aligns pictures for you without using additional software.”

1080p HD Movie Recording

The HX1 camera captures movie clips in 1080p HD resolution, and a built-in stereo microphone records crisp, clear audio. The camera’s wide 20x optical zoom is also available while shooting.

When set to HD movie, it records at 30 frames per second (1440 x 1080). The camera uses the high-quality, high-compression MPEG4 AVC/H.264 format. Other recording options include standard-definition video and VGA.

The camera also has HDMI™ connectivity via supplied HDMI accessory (cable not included) so images can be shared in high definition on an HD television set. MPEG4 AVC video recording allows you to view footage on a PC and upload it to the Web.

Sony G Lens

The Sony G lens is optimized to complement the advanced image sensors and image processing technology in Sony’s cameras. The HX1 camera features a 28-560 millimeter f/2.8-5.2 wide-angle lens with 20x telephoto range. With the combination of this G lens and sweep panorama mode, the camera can cover almost any telephoto and wide angle need.

Containing a six-blade aperture, the G lens produces beautifully defocused backgrounds with a soft, natural feel. A-spherical lens elements and elements made from extra-low dispersion glass combine to minimize chromatic aberration common to high-magnification lenses.

Intelligent Auto

Like many of Sony’s new cameras this year, the HX1 model has the convenient and powerful intelligent auto mode, which combines Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN), Optical SteadyShot™ and face detection technologies. It recognizes scenes and lighting conditions within one-thirtieth of a second, and then changes settings. This produces clearer images with more natural skin tones, reduced red-eye, fewer closed-eye shots and less overall blur without compromising image quality.

The iSCN feature detects up to eight scenes and automatically changes settings that will apply to the scene or lighting conditions. With the iSCN Advance feature, the camera takes a second shot when low or backlight is detected, letting users choose the best picture.

With face detection technology, the camera will adjust the flash, focus, exposure and white balance producing more natural skin tones and reducing red-eye. Face motion detection identifies a moving subject and adjusts the ISO to minimize blur. In conjunction with iSCN, the camera takes two pictures simultaneously and saves the one in which the eyes are the least closed.

A new selected-face memory function registers one face (selected by the user) as the main face and adjusts focus, exposure, flash and white balance accordingly. The camera remembers the face every time that face shows in the frame.

Additionally, the camera comes with Smile Shutter technology that helps capture a smile the moment it happens and dynamic range optimizer (DRO) technology that adjusts for contrast.

Pricing and Availability

The Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 camera will be available in April for about $500 and pre-sales will start in March. The camera and a range of accessories will be available online at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), at military base exchanges and at authorized dealers nationwide.
