This camera makes best sense of the Micro Four Thirds format eliminating DSLR functionality that is unnecessary. You are left with a compact camera with a ton of horsepower under the hood. This camera will be attractive to a large audience, particulary people who are on the look out for a small camera that creates excellent pictures.
“Many will agree this camera is not easier to use than a lot of basic DSLRas, some feel its ease of use is based in its digicam like operation. People who have check it out thought it was small, in a good way, felt solid, movable LCD, and the very nice electronic viewfinder. Some may think it’s a little on the expensive side however the 14-140mm lens is way more usable than shorter DSLR kit lenses.”
“We had fun with this camera mainly because of its outstanding sensor, common sense design, and cool exposure controls. If any camera will re-ignite your love of photography this is it and if that’s not a mark of a truly outstanding camera we don’t know what is.”
“It would be really nice to have a better quality electronic viewfinder to replace the one Panasonic currently delivers. With development happening as we write we are confident the next release of this camera will be sporting a higher quality viewfinder. However, this is a great xamera and Panasonic deserves a pat on the back.”
As far as performance and clean ISO range it’s a pretty capable piece of hardware.”

DigitalCameraInfo
“This camera shines when it comes to capturing clear sharp images, in fact, when it comes to resolution it was better than the full size SLRs that cost the same. Its onboard noise reduction really impressed us when we cranked it up because most of the time small image sensors yield noisy photos, not this one. White balance was accurate in both auto and custom. Another thing, this cameras auto focus system is fast, real fast. Lets be honest, it won’t keep up with a full on pro camera but hey, take this to your kids next soccer game and you will love how it performs.”

Pocket-lint
“This camera is brilliant and definitely receives out vote for its ability to merge DSLR functions with size and portability. But… it appears Olympus is not taking this laying down and future releases of the PEN could spell some tough competition for the GF1.”

PCMag
“Its low light results were a little disappointing, this is one powerful camera that comes in a little profile. Size, speed, features, and DSLR photo quality make this micro-four-thirds camera one of the most desirable cameras yet.”

TrustedReviews
“This camera will someday be regarded as a classic. Its photo quality is as good as a digital SLR but it is small enough to pack around in your pocket. If you consider quality, performance and picture quality this camera is of the highest order.”
“This is the first camera to actually deliver on the benefit of a mirrorless system: interchangeable lenses in a small form factor without killing features, speed, or picture quality at a price that won’t break the bank. Its one problem is the goofy LCD/EVF-based viewfinder system for shooting action. If you want something with a little more horsepower than a point-and-shoot, I recommend the GF1.”

ByThom
“Aside from image quality, the GF1 nearly wins. I feel this for a couple of reasons. Number one, autofocus is a clear win for the GF1. If you need or want autofocus or even manual focus, I’d recommend you pick up the GF1. However the GF1’s kit zoom lens doesn’t collapse, the camera itself doesn’t have sensor-based stabilization, and the slightly better controls and built-in flash aren’t big enough pluses to overcome those other two things.”
“Overall the camera works well with the auto setting of white balance, although in our tests we found that sometimes the preset would work better and sometimes the auto.”
“If you want a camera that does as much as possible as cheaply as possible, don’t get this one. With the GF1, you get simplicity, quality and precision, not gadgets. It will appeal most to dSLR owners looking for a back up camera, as well as old school photographers who prefer simplicity to technology. “
“We like the build quality and the look of the GF1 very much, and its picture quality is great as well. It has a fast burst mode (up to three frames per second), a useful HD video mode (albeit without stereo audio recording), and it’s very easy to use. What we don’t like is its noisy performance at high ISO speeds, its sometimes unreliable autofocusing in dimly lit scenes, and the fact that the screen often misrepresents the shot about to be taken.”
“This is a marvelous camera. There is a saying that the best camera is the one you have with you, and on that criterion alone the GF1 ranks as one of the best. It is also not surprising that demand for the Olympus E-P1 and Panasonic GF1 has overwhelmed supply. This is a new and long overdue camera type – top image quality from a compact form.”
“This camera can be carried with you, it’s unobtrusive, quick to respond, quick to focus, has a fast lens, produces excellent image quality and has good low-light performance.”
“I really loved the GF1, and will find it very hard to return it when this review is finished, meaning that I may have to wipe the dust and cobwebs off my wallet and actually hand over my own hard earned cash for one. The Olympus E-P1 now has some very, very strong competition in the form of possibly the most engaging and enjoyable camera on the market today. A compromise, for sure, but a surprisingly happy one.”

Imaging Resource
“Overall, the Panasonic GF1 is an extremely good camera for such a small package, recording impressive detail thanks to its quality sensor, image processor, and fine optics. While we’d never say it’s for everyone, the Panasonic GF1 will be irresistible for many of our readers; and it’s a sure Dave’s Pick.”
“SLR shoppers will be put off by the limited lens selection and lack of a true viewfinder. But if you want better quality than what you can get from a point-and-shoot and aren’t interested in the bulk of an SLR, the Lumix DMC-G1 will afford you plenty of photographic power and a lot of room to learn and grow.”
“The camera focuses quickly, has good shutter response and a decent continuous shooting rate. Image and video quality are very good, ISO performance leaves true compact digitals far behind, and there’s a bunch of lenses that will mount on the camera with proper adaptors, and, depending on their age, provide partial to full compatibility.”

PhotographyBlog
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 takes most of the good points of its bigger brothers, the G1 and GH1, and literally squeezes them inside a smaller, more compact-camera-like body. The fantastically well-implemented Live View, lightning fast auto-focus, excellent image quality and added bonus of 720p video make the GF1 a great camera for beginners and more serious photographers alike.”

DCResource
“It’s safe to say that you can’t get a better endorsement than having a reviewer buying the camera they are writing about. For travel and everyday shooting, the GF1 more than fits the bill. It offers great photo quality, snappy performance, and all the bells and whistles that users of compact cameras are used to, with all the benefits of an interchangeable lens camera. The GF1 is the camera many people have been waiting for, and Panasonic certainly delivered the goods.”

Luminous Landscape
“In the final analysis what we come down to is that the GF1 is likely the best of breed at the moment, but not a panacea for someone looking for a semi-pocketable large sensor camera. When combined with the LVF1 electronic viewfinder the camera starts to have an overall profile close to that of the GH1, but gives up that camera’s state-of-the-art EVF and articulated LCD, as well as 1920X1080 HD video capability.”

Which43
“That shutter is pretty loud, especially considering there is no mirror flapping around in there.”
“The GF1 and the E-P1 had us torn, and if we were forced to choose only one, we wouldn’t be able to make a decision. The Lumix has its merits, such as onboard flash and an electronic viewfinder options, which makes it stand out from its rival. But at the same time, the lack of an sensor-shift image stabilization puts it at a slight disadvantage, considering the Micro Four Thirds system is supposed to be compatible with a wide range of other optics via adapters.”
“Potential buyers should note that even though Panasonic has packed in lots of automated functions for point-and-shoot users, the full capabilities of this camera can only be realized with raw file capture – and only by users who are prepared to edit images in Adobe’s Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. The high price tag of the camera plus lens can be justified by the performance achievable through these means – but not if you plan to stick with the bundled software.”
“This is a joy of a camera to shoot with. It gave us better shots than we could hope for with any compact, at an acceptable trade-off between size and convenience. It’s dead-easy to use, with Panasonic’s intelligent iA (Intelligent Auto) mode for point and shoot situations, and full manual settings for finer control. The body is finely balanced and controls are conveniently placed. The auto-focusing technology is fast and spot-on and makes shooting a breeze.”
“The ZS1 is a photographic powerhouse with a telephoto and wide angle quality on equal with bigger cameras, and to top it off it’s small enough to pack around in your pocket. For photographers who want quality, portability, and don’t want to lug around a bigger SLR this camera hits the sweet spot. Without a doubt it gets our full endorsement.”
“This camera is loaded with features but we wish its manual controls had a little more flexibility. For people who would rather let their camera do all the heavy lifting for them this camera would be a no-brainer. In short, if you want a big zoom, compact body, and don’t really care about video here’s your camera.”
“If you use image quality as a guide then this camera wins hands down. If you can live with it’s size then you will be one happy shooter. Its lens sticks out from the body so once you wrangle it into your pocket it’s not going to want to come back out.”
“This is a very versatile camera that anyone can pick up and use in almost any situation with great results. With excellent image quality and performance to match, you will not be disappointed with the price.”
“The Panasonic Lumix TZ6 is a brilliant Zoom camera. The picture quality is brilliant and it takes pretty good video footage too. Being able to use the zoom when recording video is a definite plus. I thought at first that the camera was a bit bulky but I’ve changed my mind. It’s a camera with and amazing zoom. If it was a SLR camera the lens would be pretty big so Panasonic have done well to fit it all nicely into the TZ6. Over all The Lumix TZ6 has impressed me.”
“Colour quality is good and I like the portrait images, macro and landscape test shots. It’s a shame about noise but then I’m always disappointed with cameras of this classification. One real surprise was the complete lack of colour fringing on the landscape test.”
“If you want a pocketable point-and-shoot megazoom camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 is one of the best options around. Even with its few flaws, it comes out on top of the competition as long as you don’t need semimanual or full manual controls. Again the decision between it and the ZS3 comes down to whether you want the HD movie capture, and if you don’t, the ZS1 is a sound purchase.”
“The camera features a very clever “Intelligent Auto” mode and makes using the camera easy, and fun, and provides an abundance of scene modes for beginners. For those looking for more creativity the camera features manual white balance, exposure bracketing, rapid continuous shooting, a histogram, and other image options. Add in an impressive widescreen video mode that lets you use the optical zoom whilst filming and you have a very impressive all-round package, all squeezed into a stylish, metal camera.”
“We were very pleasantly surprised how quickly this one focused in general, and how well it captured images in burst mode, grabbing 2.5 frames per second for five images then taking a breather. While not DSLR levels, it’s far better than most aim-and-forget digicams. Overall, using the camera was effortless. After taking a raft of images indoors and out it was time to closely examine them and make full-bleed 8.5×11 prints.”
“Color looked great across the board, detail was top notch, images were sharp and noise was very low. We’re surprised we were able to squeeze a performance this impressive out of the Lumix DMC-ZS1’s basic imaging system, as we were under the impression that the step-up Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 would be a major improvement in terms of image quality.”
“Since its other headline feature of a 10 megapixel resolution has rapidly become the entry-level for dedicated digital compacts in light of the advance of the camera phone. “Panasonic’s TZ-series superzoom cameras just keep getting better and better. The pricier Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 has a better LCD and a higher-quality movie mode, but, for regular stills photography, the DMC-TZ6 is better value by far, offering fantastic flexibility, great image quality, a superb build and finish, and pocketability too.”
“Granted, it doesn’t have any manual adjustments to speak of, or HD video capability. That being said, you still can’t go wrong choosing this camera for everyday shooting. Overall, the Canon SX200 IS has more going for it but that in no way detracts from the current contender. Heft them both before you decide, then let ergonomics be your guide.”
Press

Press Release

MIAMI, FL – Panasonic today introduced the LUMIX DMC-ZS3 and DMC-ZS1, both members of the new ZS-Series, the successor to the acclaimed LUMIX TZ-Series and Panasonic’s newest ultimate compact and powerful digital cameras. The LUMIX ZS3 features 10.1-megapixels, a 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens and 12x optical zoom, meaning it has added 2x optical zoom to the award-winning TZ-Series camera, yet reduced its size. The ZS3 also features a LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens and High Definition (HD) video recording ability, known as AVCHD Lite.

“The LUMIX ZS3 is a powerhouse performer with enormous versatility. Compared with the TZ-Series, it extends the power of the optical zoom from 10x to 12x and expands the wide-angle lens from 28mm to an ultra-wide 25mm, giving it the range for virtually any shooting situations,” said David Briganti, National Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “Despite its superior lens specifications and functionality, the ZS3 is remarkably smaller and lighter than its predecessors, making it easier to carry on travels and everyday shooting opportunities.”

The ZS3 is the world’s first digital camera to feature HD video recording in “AVCHD Lite*2”. Compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format, AVCHD Lite allows longer recordings with breathtaking HD visual and audio quality. This combined with a well-considered control interface, which includes a dedicated movie recording button on the camera’s back panel, makes the ZS3 a hybrid model that performs admirably for both still and motion image capture.

The ZS3 also expands Panasonic’s popular Intelligent Auto (iA) mode with the addition of Face Recognition – a feature that “remembers” faces from previous shots*1. When a registered face appears in the frame, the camera will prioritize focus and exposure to capture it beautifully.

With Face Recognition, when a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt the users to register the face. Once registered, if the face appears into the frame again, the camera will display the name specified for that person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and sharply focused.

New this year to the ZS-Series, iA mode is also available in Movie Mode. It automatically selects the most suitable Scene mode and helps to correct handshake, focus and brightness problems – making iA mode your one-stop solution to capture beautiful still and motion images. In Movie Mode, the ZS3, Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) helps prevent handshake when using the high-powered zoom. Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion so it turns out perfectly. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change to prevent blown highlights and blocked shadows. And Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality.

The imaging power of LUMIX has further evolved with the Venus Engine HD, which boasts two CPUs to provide approx. 2.4x processing capability and support for AVCHD Lite and HDMI output. It integrates all the advanced functions and camera operations with high performance and low-power consumption. In image processing, luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately before and after signal processing. This is further refined by separating noise two-dimensionally into high-frequency and low-frequency noise. The circuits then effectively reduce only the low-frequency noise to minimize the unwanted noise and help produce beautiful, sharp still and motion images.

Playback with the ZS-Series is also easy. Simply insert the camera’s SD Memory Card into the VIERA® HDTV’s Image Viewer SD Card slot for a photo slideshow*3. Alternatively, connect the camera via an optional HDMI mini cable, the DMW-HDC2, to a VIERA Link™-equipped Panasonic VIERA HDTV and use the television’s remote control to run mixed slideshows of photos and videos. The ZS3 features a 3-inch, high resolution 460,000-dot Intelligent LCD with a wide viewing angle, improving visibility during recording and playback.

Other features of the LUMIX ZS3 include:

- Increased Scene modes for both still and motion image shooting – optimized for a variety of situations. There are 26 scene modes for still image and 17 for motion image (Portrait, Soft Skin, Transform, Self portrait, Scenery, Low light, Food, Party, Candle light, Sunset, High sensitivity, Beach, Snow, Aerial, Pin hole, Film grain and Underwater)

- Two new My Scene settings let users assign their two most frequently used Scene modes to the setting, and with a simple switch, allow access to either scene instantly.

The ZS1, like the ZS3, features a 25mm ultra-wide angle, 12x powerful optical zoom. Distinguishing it, the ZS1 features a 10.1 megapixel CCD, a standard iA mode (no Face Recognition) for still image recording and a 2.7-inch, 230,000-dot Intelligent LCD.

The DMC-ZS3 will be available in silver, black, blue and red for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $399.95, while the DMC-ZS1 will be available in black and silver for an SRP of $299.95. Both models will be available in April 2009. For more information, please visit www.panasonic.com/lumix.

*1 Depending on background and facial expression, camera may not recognize a registered person. For family members with similar facial features, camera may not correctly identify the intended subject.

*2 The “AVCHD” is a high definition (HD) digital video recording / playback format jointly established by Panasonic Corporation and Sony Corporation. The “AVCHD Lite” is a subset of the “AVCHD format” for HD digital video cameras with HD video recording restricted to 720P. The new “AVCHD Lite” Logo and the “AVCHD Lite” License are restricted to devices within the AVCHD Video Camera category. Digital cameras have now been added to the AVCHD Video Camera category. For more details, please refer to the “AVCHD Information Website”. http://www.avchd-info.org/

*3 AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played from a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.

*4 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording. (10fps in Speed Priority mode / 6fps in Picture Priority mode)

“The Lumix DMC-FZ35 costs around $325 at legit online outlets. At this price, the camera is a good deal, especially for travelers and people who take their cameras with them everywhere. It takes solid photos, has a quality wide-angle mega-zoom, is easy to use, and records superior movie clips. Just don’t expect true DSLR performance.”
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ38 / FZ35 is a super zoom digital camera with plenty of features for stills photography. It also has a very advanced movie mode. I found picture quality to be very impressive. The camera is also able to respond quickly to photo opportunities. Recommended.”
“Image quality, too, was up to snuff. The usual caveats apply to higher ISO shooting with a digicam, with images degrading at ISO 400 and falling apart at ISO 1,600 except for 5×7 or 4×6-inch printing. But the Panasonic FZ35 likes to set itself at ISO 80, and the color and tone the FZ35 captured was really a pleasure to review.”
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38/FZ35 is a first-rate superzoom. What it lacks in ultimate zoom length, it more than makes up for with its responsiveness, raw files and stereo, HD movie capability. “The biggest moan would have to be high ISO sensitivity, which causes fairly destructive image noise – not ideal for handheld shooting in low light, though image stabilization does go some way to provide a half-mast counter to this. For first time buyers looking for a superzoom-type compact the FZ35/FZ38 propositions an excellent buy. Thoroughly recommended.”
“With its wealth of features, the FZ35 is a good choice for enthusiasts especially those who want to experience how handling a dSLR is like. Features-wise, the Lumix’s rivals offer slightly higher specifications, though the trade off is that they are a tad more bulky and heavier. So do keep these factors in mind before making your decision.”
“This camera certainly has the numbers. 12 megapixels. 18X zoom. All for $770, that has to be good, doesn’t it? So why does Panasonic charge $830 for the Lumix LX3 which sports a mere 10 megapixels, a 2.5X zoom and no eye-level viewfinder? And why is that camera so popular that the company cannot make enough to meet demand? Do the words “free” and “lunch” spring to mind?”
“Image quality still isn’t in the same league as even the cheapest DSLR, especially at the higher ISO settings, so if that’s your main priority, you’d be better off compromising on the zoom range and looking elsewhere.”
“My verdict on the FZ38 is pretty much the same as for its predecessor. If you’ve already got an FZ28 it’s probably not enough of an improvement to justify an upgrade. However for anyone else looking for a new super-zoom camera they really don’t come much better than this. Build quality, handling, features, performance, image quality and versatility are superior to any of its immediate rivals, and the excellent video quality is icing on the cake. To get anything better than this you’ll have to move up to a DSLR.”
Press

Press Release

July 27, 2009 : Successor to the multiple award winning DMC-FZ28, Panasonic is pleased to introduce the Alumni DMC-FZ38 digital still camera, featuring an AVCHD Elite high-definition movie recording capability combined with powerful 27mm wide angle 18x optical zoom high quality LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens*1. Joining Panasonic’s highly regarded FZ series of cameras that pack a high-powered zoom and a host of creative options including manual operation into a compact body, the FZ38 also boasts an upgraded O.I.S(Optical Image Stabiliser) the newly named POWER O.I.S. and ultra high-speed AF together with other enhanced features that boost user fun and convenience.

Hybrid Superzoom
The demand for digital cameras that can record higher-quality movie has grown in step with the trend toward larger HDTV screens and new technologies of movie recording. Now, in addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-FZ38 can record high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite*2. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The FZ38 also features Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high quality audio, so you can match the beautiful motion images with outstanding stereo sound. A single model that performs admirably as both a camera and camcorder, while achieving smooth, easy operation in both modes.

The DMC-FZ38 packages a 27mm wide angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with F2.8 brightness and powerful 18x optical zoom*1 together with a 12.1-megapixel CCD into a compact body. Taking advantage of the versatile 27mm wide angle powerful 18x optical zoom lens, the FZ38 allows users to record both photo and movie with exceptional creative freedom. The lens unit comprises of 11 elements in 8 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses and 2 ED lenses. Notably 2 ED lenses minimize the chromatic aberration that is likely to occur in telephoto images. This set of lenses secure picture quality high enough to pass Leica’s stringent standards and delivers exceptional optical performance.

The super-powerful 18x zoom lens makes it easy to pull in subjects from far away or to take dramatic close-ups. For an added boost, zoom power can be increased to 35.2x with the Extra Optical Zoom function*3. The 27mm wide-angle feature is ideal for both broad landscapes and tight indoor shots, letting photographers capture a wider view. The 12.1-megapixel resolution allows photos to be greatly enlarged while still retaining outstanding detail, or edited by trimming and enlarging parts of the photo to print.

Panasonic’s iA Mode Just Keeps Getting Better – with new POWER O.I.S and Face Recognition
With the DMC-FZ38 taking great photos is that easy. Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. In iA mode the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press aim, and shoot.

Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto now includes new POWER O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabiliser) – a feature that helps prevent handshake even when using high-powered zoom. The new POWER O.I.S clearly captures subjects in the ultra-telephoto range, which used to require a tripod.

With twice the shake suppression capability of previous models, the new POWER O.I.S is particularly effective when shooting at night with a low shutter speed for example, whilst also greatly improving the quality of shots taken indoors where a flash cannot be used or where a photographer doesn’t want to use a flash because it would spoil the mood. Thanks to POWER O.I.S, beautiful photos can be taken in situations that previously resulted in blurring.

The iA mode is even further advanced with the inclusion Face Recognition*4, a function that “remembers” faces. When a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face. Once complete, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for the person and prioritise focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus. Up to six people’s faces can be registered, and up to three can be simultaneously recognized to show their names once registered. Three images of each face can be registered for every person, to dramatically raise the detection accuracy. And when the angle of view is changed horizontally, the name display also rotates for easier reading.

You can also specify the age of the registered subject and have both the name and the age of the subject stamped onto your photos. When babies under 3 years-old are registered, the camera will automatically switch to Baby mode if the baby appears into the frame. In playback, you can choose to display only photos that contain a specific registered face using Category Playback. You can also view image slideshows of only a selected person. Face recognition makes sorting archiving incredibly easy. This advanced face detection system also digitally corrects unwanted red-eye during recording. With AF Tracking, the FZ38 can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves – making it easy to get beautiful, clear shots when a great photo opportunity suddenly arises. Simply aim, lock, and shoot.

In addition to the advanced functions mentioned above, the iA mode inherits fundamental functions users need in a good digital still camera. These include Intelligent ISO Control, which reduces motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. Intelligent Exposure optimizes the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully.

It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects the subject is in backlight. Intelligent Scene Selector automatically detects the five most common shooting situations – Portrait, Night Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery and Macro – and switches to the appropriate Scene mode. Demonstrating it’s true hybrid capabilities, the iA mode is also available in motion image recording.

Outstanding Performance thanks to new Ultra High-Speed AF
The common concept shared by all new LUMIX products for 2009 second half is that of seamless operation, which is indispensable for stress–free photography. Panasonic’s new industry-leading, ultra high-speed AF is twice as fast as its predecessor DMC-FZ28 while the start-up time is dramatically shortened too

To realize the ultra high-speed AF, a number of re-engineering and improvements are made including the adaptation of higher-speed actuator, the optimization of algorithms and the parallelization of software processing element. The result is ultra high speed yet accurate AF performance for users to enjoy the airy shooting that has experienced never before. Panasonic also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve an ultra high-speed start-up of 1.2 second, a remarkable 20% decrease from previous models.

The Quick AF system helps keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing the shutter button halfway. This improves the chances of getting the shot because the focus is always near the subject and AF time is minimized. The user can activate all of these useful, convenient shooting-assist functions by simply selecting iA mode.

The Venus Engine HD
The high-speed, high-performance Venus Engine HD has been re-engineered to support the recording of beautiful, high-definition motion images in AVCHD Lite. With its twin CPUs, Venus Engine HD boasts approx. 2.4x processing capability, greatly improving the speed of camera operations.

This multi-task image-processing engine has a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.007 seconds, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the FZ38 can snap approx. 2.3 shots per second at 12.1-megapixel full resolution*5. In High-speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible approx. 10 shots per second*6. Newly added Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous emissions of the flash*7.

Despite its outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also more energy efficient to extend the battery life up to 470 shots (CIPA) per a single charge*8.

Perfect for filming
Motion image recording*9 can be started by pressing a dedicated one-touch button on the camera’s back panel – an extremely quick, convenient way to start motion image recording. Most of the camera’s settings will be carried over when switched to motion picture recording. The powerful 18x optical zoom is available in movie recording, too.

A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind. The FZ38 also provides a Custom Colour mode and carries over 18 different scene modes from photo scene modes in movie recording. In AVCHD Lite*10 recording, you can select from three levels of motion image quality: SH (17 Mbps), H (13 Mbps) and L (9 Mbps).

The DMC-FZ38 concept goes much further than simply recording HD movies. Setting it aside from the movie recording capability of conventional digital cameras, the DMC-FZ38 also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subjects. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out. Creative Movie mode gives the user a wider range of expressive possibilities to explore.

My Colour mode, which was popular in the Lumix G Micro System cameras, is a special option that gives free reign to the user’s creativity. In My Colour mode, the colour, brightness and saturation parameters can be freely adjusted while seeing how the adjustments affect the picture lively on the monitor. This makes it easier and more fun to create interesting, expressive images. The user can adjust the settings that best suit the shooting conditions and his or her expressive intent, for greater photographic control.

The High Dynamic mode is newly added to the existing scene modes. This mode helps to capture a scene with moderate exposure even though the scene contains both bright and dark area together. The user can select either of three options, Standard, Art, or B/W, depending on the desired effect and personal taste to make the photo look natural to artistic.

The adoption of AVCHD Lite lets users enjoy watching not only still images, but also HD movies by simply inserting the SDHC/SD Memory Card into the VIERA Image Viewer (Bulit-in SDHC/SD Memory Card slot) on any compatible Panasonic Viera HDTV or DIGA Blu-ray Disc Player. Alternatively simply connect the camera via an option HDMI cable to a VIERA link-equipped TV and use the TV’s remote control to run slideshows including both still and motion images.

In addition, with the included software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 4/0 HD Edition, it is easy to view and edit your recorded content. You may also upload your videos to YouTube or burn to a DVD disc for archiving.

Inheriting the highly regarded features found in the FZ series, the FZ38 continues to push the boundaries, offering further advancements including the new POWER O.I.S, ultra high-speed AF and AVCHD Lite motion recording. Available from September, the FZ38 offers exceptional creative freedom – perfect for beginners through to serious amateur photographers.

“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580 was a camera that I really wanted to love. Not for its touchscreen interface (though Panasonic did a good job with that), but for its manual controls. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out between us: the FX580’s mediocre image and video quality, sluggish performance (in some areas), and poor low light focusing are leading us to part ways. The FX580 is worth considering if you really want the manual controls and don’t plan on making too many large prints. If you’re more of a point-of-shoot person, then I’d recommend looking at something else — Panasonic makes plenty of other cameras which do a lot better than the FX580.”
“This is the worst camera we’ve tested this year in terms of image quality. The color accuracy is low, the images are soft, chromatic aberration is high, it has a slow burst mode.”
“The overall impression is that once again it’s a case of maximum return from minimal user effort with little if any post processing required via image editing software. For the occasional traveller looking for a sturdily built pocket snapper that will withstand the odd knock and scratch the Lumix DMC-FX550/FX580 therefore comes recommended.”
“It will take beginners a little while to get to grips with all that’s on offer – a lot of it ‘hidden’ away within menus so as not to spoil the operational ‘flow’ – but until then there’s intelligent auto to fall back on.
Press Release

27th January 2009: Elegantly demonstrating Panasonic’s commitment to excellence, Panasonic’s new DMC-FX550 touch screen interface model includes a whole host of features designed to offer superior image quality and the ultimate in user convenience. Featuring a 25mm ultra-wide angle Leica DC lens with 5x optical zoom and popular touch-screen operation on a large 3inch LCD, the new addition proudly joins Panasonic’s Lumix slim and stylish FX series – making Panasonic Lumix a formidable choice whatever your shooting needs!

Look at me!
The 12.1-megapixel DMC-FX550 packages a ultra-wide*1 25mm Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT high-quality lens with 5x optical zoom(equivalent to 25-125mm on a 35mm film camera), offering F2.8 brightness. Comprising 7 elements in 6 groups, including 4 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit passes Leica’s stringent standards and delivers an exceptional optical performance. Notably, the unevenly thick concave meniscus EA (Extra high refractive index Aspherical) lens makes it possible to achieve the 25mm ultra-wide angle high optical performance while keeping the lens unit thin and the body slim. The 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens records almost double the viewing space at the same shooting distance compared to ordinary 35mm cameras.

The zoom ratio can be extended up to 9.8x in 3 megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. By using the central part of the CCD, this powerful zooming function allows you to easily capture and magnify distant subjects. The DMC-FX550 also has an Easy Zoom feature that, at the touch of a button, shifts the lens instantly to full 5.0x zoom power. A second touch of the button activates the Extra Optical Zoom function and extends zoom all the way to 9.8x.*2

The iris diaphragm allows the users to adjust aperture at fine steps manually.

Recognize Me
Panasonic incorporated Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. This mode is also further advanced with the inclusion of the Face Recognition*3 feature – a function that ‘remembers faces’.

When a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face*4. Once complete, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for that person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus. Perfect for group shots for example – this new feature will give auto focus and auto exposure priority to a single person, ensuring their loved ones face will be captured beautifully.

During registration, you can change the icon that indicates when the registered subject is in focus – for example you can attach a love heart to your partner. You can also manually register a persons details and the camera will remember them whenever you take a photo.

To further add to its appeal, you can also specify the age of the registered subject and have both the name and the age of the subject stamped onto your photos. When babies under 3 years-old are registered, the camera will automatically switch to Baby mode if the baby appears into the frame. In playback, you can choose to display only photos that contain a specific registered face using Category Playback – so you can search for all photos of your Aunt Yvonne, for example – perfect for compiling a surprise birthday collage.

You can also view image slideshows of only a selected person. Face recognition makes sorting archiving incredibly easy. This advanced face detection system also digitally corrects unwanted red-eye during recording.

Track Me
With AF Tracking, the DMC-FX550 can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves – making it easy to get beautiful, clear shots when a great photo opportunity suddenly arises. Simply aim, lock, and shoot. And the Intelligent Scene Selector automatically detects common shooting situations and switches to the appropriate scene mode and automatically turns backlight compensation on when necessary.

In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating AF tracking, Face Detection with Face Recognition, Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, and Intelligent Exposure. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.

Touch Me!
The DMC-FX550 incorporates a large 3.0-inch touch-screen interface to achieve amazing ease in both shooting and playing back the images. Effortlessly easy to navigate thanks to the responsive interface, the FX550’s touch screen is streets ahead of its competitors.

The enhanced hybrid control system in the FX550 combines cursor key control with touch screen operation, allowing a smooth and intuitive operation. Users can make basic settings directly with the cursor key while they can make extensive adjustments intuitively by touching or moving the slider on the screen. Users can set the auto focus and exposure at the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject at that part while recording. In manual exposure mode, aperture and shutter speed can be adjusted by moving the slider. You can also make fine adjustment of white balance and colour temperature with the touch screen.

In playback mode, even large, high resolution images can be comfortably played back with a touch scroll. The Easy Organization menu is provided to simplify image organizing. The user can quickly select an image to view by scrolling the thumbnails located below the main window, and then edit the image by resizing, trimming and inputting the text title of the picture. You can also flag the desired image as your favorites or delete them in one menu interface.

This touch-screen interface features a high-resolution Intelligent LCD which automatically controls the brightness at a total of 11 fine steps by detecting the surrounding lighting condition. This function gives the display the most appropriate clarity in any situation.

If this wasn’t enough, the menus now look clearer and easier to navigate, even for seniors, thanks to the new Display Size option.

Thanks to the Venus Engine HD, smooth image playback at very high speeds is now available and is approx.17x faster for thumbnails and approx. 4x for a single image, even with image resolutions as high as 12.1-megapixels.

High Performance Venus Engine V
The high-speed, high-performance Venus Engine has been re-engineered and reborn as the even more powerful Venus Engine V. Apart from the conventional imaging engine, the Venus Engine V has twin CPUs to boast approx. 2.4x processing speed. In addition, this high performance LSI elevates the artificial intelligence of the camera, making it possible to “recognize” the human faces individually.

In the image processing, parallel noise reduction in both luminance signal and chromatic signal processing systems is performed. Then, the luminance noise is further two-dimensionally separated into high-frequency and low-frequency noises and only the low-frequency noise, which tends to be conspicuous, is eliminated without affecting the high-frequency noise that greatly influences resolution.

The multi-task image-processing engine Venus Engine V supports super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.007 second and the camera’s quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the DMC-FX550 can snap approx. 2.3 shots per second at 12.1-megapixel large full resolution.*5 And in High-Speed Burst shooting mode,*6 it fires off an incredible approx. 10 shots per second.*4 You also get unlimited consecutive shooting which lets you keep shooting until the memory card is full*7. Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take continuous shooting with continuous emission of flash*8.

In addition to outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also superior in its energy efficiency by approx.16% compared with the conventional Venus Engine IV to extend the battery life up to 350 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.

Enjoy Me
Highly specified, yet remaining easy to use – the new FX550 features a variety of features to expand the fun and convenience for users. For example, the new scene mode for shooting still images includes the Panorama Assist mode, which allows you to create powerful panoramic images – both vertically and horizontally. Simply align your shots according to a guide which overlaps the frame when you shoot, then use the included PanoramaMaker software to create your panorama images.

With the new Macro Zoom function, the user can pull subjects even closer than the closest point possible with the wide-angle setting by using 3x digital zoom, and capture dramatic close-ups.

Additionally, all Lumix cameras can take 1920×1080 pixel high-definition quality photos that are ideal for full-screen viewing on a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV.

“All was not perfect, we found the photos taken at ISO settings higher than 800 were a lot noisier than other cameras, and the photos the 12x zoom lens captured got a little soft at the long end of the zoom range.”
“There’s little to not to like about the Panasonic Lumix ZS3 AKA Lumix TZ7 – it has a big and wide 12X lens stuffed into a relatively compact body, it has a large, sharp display, plenty of scene modes and bells and whistles, and most importantly, good performance in terms of speed and image quality.”
“Even if you’re not interested in taking movies, the rest of the DMC-TZ7’s features – coupled with its performance – make this camera well worth the money. If you are looking for a compact camera to take along your travels or simply want one that is a cut above your average compact, then the DMC-TZ7 should be near the top of your list.”
“I was impressed by the optical performance in the TZ7 with no evidence of any distortion with the zoom at wide or tele end. Still images: accurate colour rendition with excellent sharpness. A great performance. Ostensibly, the Panasonic DMC-ZS3/TZ7 is a simple point-and-shoot camera. But I found it an impressive camera!”
“Overall the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7/ZS3 is one of the better cameras in a competitive class. If you haven’t used a Panasonic (or Leica for that matter) it’s definitely worth checking out. Despite its flaws and design problems, the ZS3 is going to win over most people who shoot with it, regardless of what camera they currently use.”
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 goes to the top of the list for sub-$400 digicams. With its 12x wide-angle zoom, compact size and very good high-def video, the camera comes close to our two-in-one fantasy device. It’s not perfect though with its lack of manual settings, hard-to-obtain super sharpness in stills and video and other issues we’ve detailed here. When you search the web for ZS3 prices, you’ll rarely find it going for less than list—and that tells you all you need to know about this highly-regarded camera.”
“The white balance really irks us. We wish we could adjust the White Balance in Starry Sky mode, but this is not a perfect world. Despite this, it was one of our very few gripes and the Lumix DMC-ZS3 can certainly handle a dimly-lit shooting environment.”
“The TZ7 is a very decent long-zoom compact and certainly has lived up to its predecessor’s good reputation. However, the lack of manual exposure controls puts this shooter at a disadvantage against the competition. But the upside is that the Lumix delivers good picture quality and that alone puts it at the top of our chart.”
“Buy this camera if – You’re looking for a pocketable superzoom digicam that can record good-looking stills and HD video clips with stereo sound – You want good wide-angle coverage and competent image stabilisation for shooting both video and still pictures – You can live with high levels of automation.”
“There is a great deal to like about this camera. Picture quality is up there with the very best cameras in this class. It has one of the most advanced movie modes around and there are other great touches such as the quality of the LCD screen.”
“The standard box demonstrates the good optical quality. There’s average distortion even in the extreme wide angle setting (25 mm!) and nearly no chromatic aberrations on contrast lines. Sharpness is reduced at the corners of the image.”
“Picture quality was excellent for both cameras under a range of lighting and shooting conditions, and picking which camera shot which photo in a blind test would be very difficult to the untrained eye. The Canon showed more vibrant colours when shooting macros under difficult lighting conditions, but a lack of detail compared with the Panasonic.”
“If you only want stills, get the TZ6. You’ll pay less, too. If you fancy HD movies on your superzoom, get the TZ7. Both are brilliant cameras, so it just depends on what you want to do. You could be picky about the slow zooming and AF in movie mode, but this isn’t a pro camcorder, it’s a hybrid — and a really good one.”
“We like the results from both cameras very much. If the ZS3 would allow RAW and more manual control it would come close to the camera we are looking for. The main issue with the G10 is just size and weight. I would say if you plan to own only one camera the G10 has lot going for it. If you look for a smaller pocketable camera the ZS3 could be your choice.”
“Panasonic’s new Lumix ZS3 is an outstanding new addition to the Lumix line. Packed full of features, you will be able to find a way to shoot in even the most difficult of situations. The 12x optical zoom lens makes this one of the most versatile cameras of the market, while the O.I.S. makes the 300mm telephoto end functional as a handheld.”
“This is a very good camera. Indeed it is one of the best compacts, as it should be at the price. Panasonic seem to have dealt with the noise problem that has plagued their compacts in the past. Images are now clean and sharp, at least up to ISO200, and quite acceptable at ISO400. Highly recommended.”
“Sharpness is extremely good throughout and, at the telephoto end, this is also a testament to the effectiveness of the excellent optical image stabiliser system. Our only minor complaint is the placement of the Mode dial, which makes it too easy to switch modes accidentally when reaching for the zoom switch.”
“It’s also sad that the Panasonic LUMIX TZ7 has to give in when it comes to noise compared to its predecessor, despite the slight increase of the amount of effective pixels with 1 Megapixel. The TZ7 performs well to excellently up to and including ISO 400 to only show visible noise at ISO 800. Thankfully, the MEGA O.I.S. image stabilizer helps in not having to use a high ISO that soon, but it remains a pity.”
“Whether the ZS3 ultimately achieves the seamless “hybridization” that Panasonic claimed for this new model in its integration of video and still captures is an open question. Video performance is quite possibly the best you’ll find on a still camera, though casual shooters may be frustrated by a lack of post-processing options for the camera’s highest-quality 720p video files. If you’re able to put this, as well as few image quality and usability niggles, behind you, though, the ZS3 looks like another clear advancement in Panasonic’s compact ultrazoom line.”

Imaging Resource
“Panasonic took a few simple steps to make the ZS3’s interface easier to use, and the results will appeal to most users. What I liked most was having a zoom lens that was long enough to encompass my vision: allowing me to shoot both very wide angle and reach out a little further than normal with a 300mm-equivalent zoom.”
“It would be nice if the camera had some more–OK, any–manual features, like the SX200 IS, but if you’re looking for a real point and shoot with the flexibility to cover a large variety of shooting situations, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 offers a very compelling alternative.”
“I think it’s safe to say that Panasonic is going to sell a lot of Lumix DMC-ZS3 cameras. They’ve done a nice job improving on the TZ5, though I’m not really sold on the AVCHD Lite codec. A lot of people have been comparing the DMC-ZS3 to Canon’s PowerShot SX200 IS, and I’d say that the ZS3 is the better of the two cameras. The only place where the SX200 comes out ahead is in terms of manual controls: it has the full suite. If that’s not important, then I think you’ll be more than happy with the DMC-ZS3.”
“Panasonic may no longer have the compact super-zoom market to itself, but the latest Lumix TZ7 / ZS3 remains a highly compelling camera that’s likely to sell by the bucket-load. It takes the already excellent Lumix TZ5 with its 720p video, 3in / 460k screen and multiple aspect recording, and enhances it with a wider and longer lens (with impressive quality), more efficient video recording (while retaining the older mode for easier editing), improved face detection, an HDMI port and an extra Megapixel.”
Press

Press Release

Panasonic today introduced the Lumix DMC-ZS3 as the newest member of its acclaimed TZ series. With 10.1-megapixel, a 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens and 12x optical zoom, the ZS3 is a worthy addition to a series of cameras that have won worldwide popularity for packing powerful zoom lenses into compact bodies.
The ZS3 is a powerhouse performer with enormous versatility. It features a new LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with 10.1-megapixel resolution. Compared with previous models, it extends the power of the optical zoom from 10x to 12x and expands the wide-angle lens from 28mm to an ultra-wide 25mm while reducing both size and weight of the body, giving it the range for virtually all shooting situations.

The DMC-ZS3 is the world’s first digital camera that records motion image in AVCHD Lite. The AVCHD Lite realizes long time recording of high-definition motion image. The well-considered operational command layout including an independent movie recording button makes the DMC-ZS3 a true hybrid — a single model that performs admirably as both camera and camcorder while achieving smooth, easy operation in both modes.

Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto mode — a hallmark of Lumix cameras — now includes Face Recognition, a function that “remembers” faces from previous shots. When a familiar face appears in the frame, the camera will prioritize focus and exposure to capture it beautifully. This clever function makes it easy to get sharp and clear photos of loved ones in a group of people. iA mode is also available in Movie Mode. It automatically selects the most suitable Scene mode and helps to correct handshake, focus and brightness problems – making iA mode your one-stop solution to capture beautiful still and motion images.

The adoption of AVCHD Lite lets users enjoy watching not only still images but also HD movies just inserting the SDHC/SD Memory Card from the camera in the VIERA Image Viewer(Built-in SDHC/SD Memory Card slot) on a VIERA HDTV to start playback*. Alternatively, simply connect the camera via an optional mini-HDMI cable to a VIERA Link-equipped TV and use the TV’s remote control to run slideshows including both still and motion images in the timeline. The ZS3 features a 3-inch, high resolution 460,000-dot Intelligent LCD with a wide viewing angle, improving visibility during recording and playback.

Despite its superior lens specifications and functionality, the ZS3 is smaller and lighter than its predecessors, making it easier to bring with you on your travels. Enjoy stunning photos and HD videos from 25mm wide-angle to 12x telephoto – the ZS3 is your ideal travel partner delivering ultimate performance in a pocket-sized body.

*Turn Face Recognition item ON and resister the person with full-face portrait on the shooting menu in advance. Refer to back page for detail.
*The “AVCHD” is a high definition (HD) digital video recording / playback format jointly established by Panasonic Corporation and Sony Corporation. The “AVCHD Lite” is a subset of the “AVCHD format” for HD digital video cameras with HD video recording restricted to 720P. The new “AVCHD Lite” Logo and the “AVCHD Lite” License are restricted to devices within the AVCHD Video Camera category. Digital cameras have been added to the AVCHD Video Camera category.
*The “AVCHD Lite” and the “AVCHD Lite” logo are trademarks of Panasonic Corporation and Sony Corporation.
*AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played from a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.

1. 25mm Ultra-Wide-Angle LEICA DC Lens with 12x Optical Zoom for Ultimate Versatility in Both Still and Motion Image Shooting
The ZS3 features a high-quality LEICA DC VARIO ELMAR 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens with a 12x optical zoom. A lens like this, with a range from 25mm to 300mm in 35mm film equivalence, is almost inconceivable in such a small, lightweight camera. Comprising 10 elements in 8 groups, including 2 ED lenses and 2 aspherical lenses with 3 aspherical surfaces, and utilizing new lens material in its design, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly slim and compact body while passing Leica’s stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance. The Extra Optical Zoom function that extends zoom power to 21.4x (at 3-megapixel resolution) by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer without deteriorating the image quality.

The ZS3 has a 12-megapixel CCD and shoots with up to 10-megapixel resolution. This is because the CCD on the ZS3 is multi-aspect that can reproduce images shot with the lens set from 25mm to 300mm in any of three aspect ratios – 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 – so you can always capture dynamic, richly expressive shots with a wide perspective. The Multi Aspect mode lets you to take an image in all three aspect ratios simultaneously then choose the one that best suits your scene after shooting.

2. Take Motion Picture Recording to the Next-Level with New Generation AVCHD Lite and iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode
In addition to Motion JPEG images, the ZS3 can record high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The ZS3 also features Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high quality audio, so you can match the beautiful motion images with outstanding stereo sound.

Now on the ZS3, the popular iA (Intelligent Auto) is also available in motion image recording. Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) helps prevent handshake when using high-powered zoom. Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion on it so it always turns out beautifully.

Motion image recording can be started by pressing a dedicated button on the camera’s back panel — an extremely quick, convenient way to start motion image recording. Most of the camera’s settings will be carried over when switched to motion picture recording. The powerful 12x optical zoom is available in movie recording, too. A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind. The ZS3 also provides a Color mode and carries over 17 different scene modes from photo scene modes in movie recording. In AVCHD Lite recording, you can select from three levels of motion image quality: SH (17 Mbps), H (13 Mbps) and L (9 Mbps).

Still or motion images recorded in AVCHD Lite on SD Memory Cards are easy to view on a Panasonic VIERA TV. Simply insert the card into the VIERA Image Viewer (SDHC/SD Memory Card slot) on VIERA TV or DIGA Blu-ray Disc Player to playback your contents. Alternatively, you can use an optional mini HDMI cable to output the still and motion images you took from the ZS3 directly to the TV for VIERA Link. You can take maximum advantage of Lumix camera’s playback functions including the slideshow in which both still and motion images integrated in the timeline, category playback according to the scene mode you used or calendar display and so on. All control is possible using only the TV’s remote control.

In addition, with the included software PHOTOfunSTUDIO HD Edition, it is easy to view and edit your recorded contents. You may also choose to upload your videos to YouTube or burn them to a DVD disc for archiving.

*When you set the picture quality to HD, WVGA or VGA, we recommend using a high-speed card with “10MB/s” or greater displayed on the package.
*Motion pictures can be recorded continuously for up to 15 minutes in some countries.
*Continuous recording exceeding 2GB is not possible when recording motion JPEG. Remaining time for continuous recording is displayed on the screen.
*AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played from a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.

3. Newly Added Face Recognition Makes the iA (Intelligent Auto) Further Evolved
With the ZS3, taking great photos is that easy. Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. This mode is now further advanced with the inclusion of Face Recognition and AF Tracking features for ZS3. In iA mode the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press aim, and shoot.

The ZS3 features Face Recognition, a function that “remembers” faces. When a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face. Once complete, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for that person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus. During registration, you can change the icon that indicates when the registered subject is in focus.

With AF Tracking, the ZS3 can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves – making it easy to get beautiful, clear shots when a great photo opportunity suddenly arises. Simply aim, lock, and shoot.

In addition to the advanced functions mentioned above, the iA mode inherits fundamental functions users need in a good digital still camera. These include MEGA O.I.S., which helps prevent blurring from hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which reduces motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. The MEGA O.I.S. now has an AUTO mode to select between the conventional Mode 1 and 2 depending on which mode best suits the zoom ratio being used.
The Quick AF system helps keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing the shutter button halfway. This improves the result out of a shutter chance because the focus is always near the subject and AF time is minimized. The number of metering points has also been increased from the previous 9 points to a more detailed 11 points.

The user can activate all of these useful, convenient shooting-assist functions by simply selecting iA mode.
*Turn Face Recognition item ON and resister the person with full-face portrait on the shooting menu in advance. Refer to back page for detail.

4. Venus Engine HD Assures High Picture Quality for Both Still and Motion Picture
This high performance LSI elevates the artificial intelligence of the camera by introducing new circuitry making it possible to “recognize” human faces individually. It also supports high definition output through HDMI.

This multi-task image-processing engine has a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.006 seconds, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. In burst shooting mode, the ZS3 can snap approx. 2.3 shots per second at 10.1-megapixel full resolution*1. In High-speed Burst shooting mode, it fires off an incredible approx. 10 shots per second*2. Unlimited consecutive shooting is also available to let you shoot until the memory card is full*3. Newly added Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous emissions of the flash*4.
Despite its outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also more energy efficient compared with the conventional Venus Engine IV, extending the battery life up to 300 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.
*1 Max. 5 images in standard mode / 3 images in fine mode.
*2 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording. (10fps in Speed Priority mode / 6fps in Image Priority mode)
*3 The consecutive shooting speed varies with the memory card, image size, and image compression mode. The number of shots depends on the memory card size, battery life, image size and image compression mode.
*4 Max. 5 images. In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.

5. A 3.0-inch, Super High Resolution 460,000-dot LCD for Easy Playback
The ZS3 is equipped with a 3.0-inch, 460,000-dot Intelligent LCD with super high resolution and a wide viewing angle. The screen brightness automatically adjusts in 11 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes, ensuring easy visibility at all times. The big screen reflects fine details, making it easy to check the focus before shooting. It also serves as a small photo and video viewer, allowing the user and friends to enjoy viewing the still and motion images together.
Menus are now cleaner and easier to navigate, even for seniors, thanks to the new “Display Size” option. Thanks to the Venus Engine HD, smooth image playback at very high speeds is now available approx. 17x faster for thumbnail and approx. 4x for single image even the image resolution is as high as 12.1-megapixel.
The ZS3 offers a Mode Playback feature which allows you to choose playing back ‘only still images’, ‘only motion images’, or ‘both’. When choosing to playback ‘only motion images’, you can even select to playback AVCHD Lite and Motion JPEG videos separately. Images and videos can be played back together with an attractive seamless effect and background music in the new Slideshow Mode. Using an optional mini HDMI cable, you share your slideshows in astounding HD video and audio quality on your HDTV with your family and friends.

6. Other Versatile Functions Adding to the Photographic Enjoyment
Lumix functions continue to evolve. Scene modes, which are optimized for a variety of still-image shooting situations, are now available for motion images as well. Thanks to a rich variety of 27 scene modes for still image and 17 for motion image (Portrait, Soft Skin, Transform, Self portrait, Scenery, Low light, Food, Party, Candle light, Sunset, Beach, Snow, Aerial, High Sensitivity, Pin hole, Film grain and Underwater), capturing beautiful videos is effortless with the ZS3.
The new scene mode for shooting still images includes the Panorama Assist mode, which allows you to create powerful panoramic images – both vertically and horizontally. Simply align your shots according to a guide which overlaps the frame when you shoot, then use the included Panorama Maker software to create your panorama images.
The mode dial comes with two My Scene settings. Users can assign a specific scene mode to each setting and switch instantly between modes when desired.
The minimum shooting distance has been shortened to 3 cm on the ZS3. With the new Macro Zoom function, the user can pull subjects even closer than the closest point possible with the wide-angle setting by using 3x digital zoom, and capture dramatic close-ups.

“The main area where the Panasonic FS15 seems to falter is in its timing, as the camera is markedly slow in its shot-to-shot cycle times, though it does offer a reasonably fast Hi-Speed Burst mode. A good processor, high-quality Leica lens and smart automatic features in a tiny little package make the Panasonic FS15 a good deal.”
“The lens is the standout feature of this camera. At both minimum and maximum zoom levels we were pleased with a lack of distortion, with sharpness levels only dropping off at maximum zoom towards the edges of the frame. Colours are well represented, tending towards vibrant rather than natural, but we did not notice any over-saturation or significant loss of detail in high-contrast areas.”
“This is an example of a compact camera done right. With its stylish looks and relatively good specs list, the Lumix FS15 won’t disappoint unless you’re looking for HD video and manual controls.”
“It’s extremely easy to use, even when you step off the full-auto path to gain a little more control. Photographs we took of people, animals, and scenery all exhibited excellent color fidelity. This camera proved particularly good at taking close-ups—even without activating the macro mode and in situations that required the flash. The 5X zoom won’t meet everyone’s needs, and more experienced photographers will want a unit that offers greater manual control, but in fairness, this is an excellent digital camera for the money.”
“This camera does a good all round job. It is a mid priced pocket camera offering good value for money. It has a few extra features tucked away and I like the extra zoom that becomes available when shooting at lower resolutions.”
Press

Press Release

January 16th 2009 : The world renowned Panasonic Lumix range offers sophistication in both technology and style, evidence of which lies in the new 12.1 megapixel DMC-FS15. The latest addition to the award winning FS series boasts a whole host of features – including a 29mm wide angle Leica DC lens* with 5x optical zoom and Intelligent Auto – whilst remaining inherently easy to use.

Intelligent Auto Mode Just Keeps Getting Better
Panasonic incorporated Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. This mode is also further advanced with the inclusion of the AF tracking and Intelligent Exposure feature for the DMC-FS15. Furthermore, digital red-eye correction is also integrated in the Face Detection.

In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating AF tracking, Intelligent Exposure, Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector, Mega O.I.S. (optical image stabilizer), and Intelligent ISO Control. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.

With the new AF Tracking function, the user can “lock” the focus onto a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the user having to hold the shutter button halfway down. This makes it easier to capture the perfect moment clearly and in sharp focus when shooting images of a child, pet, sports or any scene with moving subjects and spur-of-the-moment action.

Intelligent Exposure suppresses blocked shadows and blown highlights to capture images that look natural and true-to-life. It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects that the light source is behind the subject

Face detection accuracy has been increased in the FS15 to now provide continuous adjustment of the focus and exposure even if the face is turned sideways to the camera. Combined with AF Tracking, Face Detection helps users capture special moments, including the fleeting expressions on the faces of active children. Plus, with the FS15, the red-eye effect can be digitally corrected automatically when it occurs due to the use the flash.

Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 5 scene modes — Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, and Night Scenery – best suits the shooting situation. The Quick AF system allows the camera to keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing a shutter button.

In addition to the advanced functions mentioned above, the iA mode inherits fundamental functions users need in a good digital still camera. These include MEGA O.I.S., which prevents blurring from hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. The MEGA O.I.S. conventionally has mode 1 and 2, and now it has AUTO mode to select the suitable one between the modes according to the zoom ratio being used.

The user can activate all of these useful functions by simply pressing an independent iA button on the top of the camera, which is newly equipped for direct activation. All these features make the FS15 the ultimate, super-versatile automatic camera for capturing clear, beautiful, mistake-free photos with ease.

The bigger picture with the Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR wide angle lens

The 12.1-megapixel DMC- FS15 packages a 29mm wide-angle* Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with 5x optical zoom into a slim, compact body. Comprising 7 elements in 6 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses with 4 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly slim and compact body yet passing Leica’s stringent standards to deliver an exceptional optical performance.

The zoom ratio can be extended up to 9.8x (294mm*) in 3megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. By using the central part of the CCD, this powerful zooming function allows you to easily capture and magnify distant subjects.

High Performance Venus Engine IV
The image-processing LSI, Venus Engine IV, features advanced signal processing technology for rendering high quality images.

Featured in the DMC- FS15, the multi-task image-processing engine Venus Engine IV supports a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as 0.006 seconds and the camera’s quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. And in High-Speed Burst shooting mode,**it fires off an incredible 5.5 shots per second. You also get unlimited consecutive shooting,***which lets you keep shooting until the memory card is full.

The Venus Engine IV also supports a High Sensitivity mode that lets the DMC-FS15 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400, sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.**

Look at me!

The DMC-FS15 incorporates an easy-to-see, large, 2.7-inch 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The Intelligent LCD function detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by max. 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and adjusts the frame rate when shooting in low-lit situations in addition to using the pixel mixed readout method to secure clarity in such situations. Detecting the lighting condition precisely and automatically controlling the brightness with a total of 11 fine steps, this function gives the display the most appropriate clarity in any situation without using extra energy.

The High Angle mode makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as when shooting over a crowd.

The Sound of Music
To increase your enjoyment when playing back your images, the FS15 provides slideshows complete with music. Just select the pictures you want to show and choose the mood that best matches your selection from natural, slow, urban or swing, and you’ll get an emotion-filled slideshow with a variety of slide change effects and matching music without any annoying adjustments to the newly added speaker.

Additionally, all Lumix cameras can take 1920×1080 pixel high-definition quality photos that are ideal for full-screen viewing on a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV. Panasonic has long focused on making photography more enjoyable, such as by letting people view their images easily on a Panasonic Viera TV with Viera Image Viewer (internal SD card slot).

Not forgetting motion pictures, the FS15 can record WVGA**** (848 x 480) motion pictures at 30 frames per second in addition to standard VGA 640 x 480). The WVGA***** motion picture also fits a wide-screen (16:9) TV perfectly to offer impressive viewing.

The Fun of Photography
Technically specified, yet remaining easy to use – the new FS15 features a variety of features to expand the fun and convenience for users. For example, the user can select from among several icons for the camera to use for indicating when the subject is in focus. In addition to the conventional dot, a flower, car and several other new shapes are available. The FS15 also adds a new “Photo Frame” mode. It lets the user put attractive borders around the photo. When printed, the photos look like postcards in picture frames, making them ideal as presents. With the My Scene setting, the user can assign up to two specific scene modes, which you use most often, and switch instantly to those modes when desired.

The minimum shooting distance has been shortened to 3cm in the FS15 – great for macro shots. Using the digital Zoom Macro function, the user can pull subjects even closer than the closest point possible with the wide-angle setting, and capture dramatic close ups.

Introducing the included software
The latest version of exciting software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0 comes bundled with the DMC-FS15. The PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0 allows the user to edit or organize a collection of photos with more ease and fun. It features Face Recognition function that recognizes the faces in the picture stored in your PC to sort the photos by faces. Conventionally, you had to pick up one by one out of hundreds of photos when you only want the picture of a specific person. But with the PHOTOfunSTUDIO 3.0, the software automatically does it once the face is registered regardless of the camera type you used – perfect for digging out all photos of Aunt Mary for her birthday surprise for example! On the sophisticated interface, you can also enjoy emotional slideshow with a variety of effects. Motion pictures (MOV or MPEG2) can also be upload directly to YouTube.******

The slim and sleek DMC-FS15 will be available from February in a choice of silver, black and blue.

“There’s no doubt at all that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 is a very nice camera. Build quality is excellent, and the camera body and control layout are very well designed. Performance is first rate, image quality in both still and video modes is certainly acceptable, and the extensive list of features and options give it a lot of creative potential. The only question is whether you want to pay such a high price for it.”
“If you’re looking for an entry point into the Micro Four Thirds world, don’t buy the GH1. That said, if you’re interested in dabbling in some professional video footage and also want some great still images to boot, the GH1 is a great investment. Just watch out for that incredibly expensive swing tag.”
“The GH1 is an exceptional camera, but more than anything it is an exceptional video camera. In terms of still imaging it has some improvements on the previous G1 model, though these are not significant enough on their own to justify the huge price difference.”
“The Lumix GH1 captures Pantone-precise colors and Ginsu-sharp details for both video and stills. Whatever you shoot, it offers the same bucketful of configuration options, including shutter speed, aperture, light sensitivity, and 12 style modes, like the sepia-toned Nostalgic effect.”
“I was really pleased with the GH1 as a fun and capable alternative to a DSLR. It’s certainly not a camera for everyone; however, it’s a camera anyone can pick up and start using. If all the buttons are too intimidating, it’s easy to pick the GH1 up, set it to Auto mode and start shooting. Users wanting to move up from a point and shoot camera to something with better image quality will instantly benefit from the GH1’s larger sensor.”
“The bottom line here is that the $1500 GH1 is a near perfect choice for shooters graduating from a prosumer/long zoom digicam to their first dSLR. For more serious photographers who eschew video in favor of still photography, the GH1 might not be their best option.”
“Given the quality of its HD video, the GH1 is more compelling than the G1 was. But it’s quite pricey, since it comes only as a kit with the 10X zoom lens. That’s a useful—and for many people, all-encompassing—range. Nevertheless, we look forward to a more economical offering from Panasonic. After all, if you don’t care about continuous AF in video, you could get a Nikon D90 kit with 18–105mm f/3.5–5.6 VR lens for about $350 less.”
“The GH1 comes into its own, however, when shooting video. It can record video in high definition and save it as either AVCHD or motion-JPEG files: movie buffs will want to know that it can handle both 720p and 1080i, although oddly the 1080i movies are captured at 25fps progressive and converted in the camera to 50fps interlaced.”
“The camera is fast, well-designed, enormously satisfying to use, and generally tops in image and video quality. Yet even the GH1 is only a way station, not a destination. First, you don’t yet get all the creative possibilities of S.L.R. video, since there are only four lenses in the Micro Four Thirds line so far.”
“Judged on its merits alone, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 shines. But at $1500, it’s significantly more expensive than an entry-level DSLR–and that’s before factoring in the price of buying those hard-to-find Micro Four Thirds lenses. Those with enough cash and curiosity to invest in the GH1 will be pleased with its ability to capture video.”
“The Panasonic G-series is the first series of system cameras aimed at a specific photographer, not the actual specialist, but someone with high demands when it comes to camera / video quality. We will no doubt soon hear of Panasonic’s plans with the Micro Four Thirds system, however; if you can’t wait, you will have a very complete camera with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 for high-quality picture and video capture in a most creative way!”
“The Panasonic GH1 will be the first camera we likely use more for video than for photography. We bought the GH1 to experience one of the most advanced Combo Cams (does HD video and still with larger sensor than the consumer video cams).”
“The only other real problem in our tests was that autofocus proved quite hit and miss. Considering its high asking price, the GH1 ultimately feels more like a clever gadget than a proper camera.”
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 is easy to use, and you get the hang of it quickly. It feels a little bulky and cumbersome considering it’s using technology that’s designed to enable smaller cameras to be built. However, if you’re used to a digital SLR then this should be of no consequence. It will take super-crisp photos with vibrant colours and its video mode is very useful.”
“Ultimately though, the biggest hurdle for the GH1 is its cost. Although the asking price includes that very decent spec lens, that’s still quite a big ask of the “advanced amateur”. Its manufacturer might argue that the set-up will be all most will ever need, yet if you don’t need video or the longer lens, the G1 predecessor now looks considerably better value.”
“With its articulated LCD and electronic viewfinder it trumps the 5DMKII in terms of shooting practicality, and also other models from Nikon, Canon et al which suffer from similar shooting inconveniences as well as an inability to shoot true 1020/P24. Sure, the GH1 will be superceeded soon enough, but for the moment it is the king Combocam.”
“Still image test results for the GH1 are a mixed bag, with good sharpness, low distortion and chromatic aberration but poor color accuracy and white balance, and more image noise than we’d like. Burst mode produces just over 3 shots per second, not great but acceptable.”
“It is nothing short of a piece of electronic genius! Suffice to say, we are hard, hard, hard on gear and the Panasonic DMC-GH1 was a workhorse and a tank even though it was light and ergonomic. We are camera snobs and this thing was worth its weight in gold.”
“This is the most complete and well-rounded hybrid camera we’ve tested. Both the stills and movie capabilities are very well thought-out and implemented, with few compromises to mention. Considering this is only the second Micro Four Thirds camera on the market (and so closely based on the first), it’s an extremely impressive start for the youthful standard.”
“The GH1 offers the same ease-of-use and solid image quality as its sister model G1. On top top of that you get the best implementation of a HD video mode that we have yet seen on a large sensor camera. You pay a fairly hefty premium for this feature, but for anyone who is planning to make good use of the camera’s motion picture capabilities, the GH1 has to be highly recommended.”
“The integration of video with still capture is much better than we’ve found in any of the DSLRs we’ve reviewed to date and the video and audio quality are better than some of these models. Excellent video clips quality – and the ability to control depth of field when shooting video – will also attract enthusiast still/video photographers who wish to use both options.”
“Not only does the GH1 provide the only Live View experience on a DSLR that is practical and usable, but Live View provides the photographer an even more accurate representation of what will actually be captured on the image sensor. Add the new HD Movie with continuous focus capability and the GH1 becomes a full-featured tool for budding and advanced amateur photographers alike.”
“Optical quality is surprising. Autofocus speed is impressive. And though the electronic viewfinder doesn’t do well with shadow detail, it’s still the best we’ve seen in lieu of a true optical viewfinder. Printed output finalizes the impression that the Panasonic GH1 is an excellent digital camera, as it easily outputs 13×19-inch prints from JPEGs and 20×30-inch prints from RAW files.”
“This camera offers a fantastically well-implemented Live View experience in a small and portable DSLR-like format with the addition of an intuitive video mode that mere mortals, and not just experienced videographers, can produce great results with. If you don’t need the video capabilities, though, the much cheaper DMC-G1 camera is by far the more logical choice.”
“The GH1 is both a very capable digital still camera, and its video recording abilities are impressive, as well. The AVCHD video format is not for the faint-hearted, and you may need to purchase some pricey software in order to actually edit it, so keep that in mind. At least Panasonic gives the user the option of using M-JPEG, at least for 720p and below. The bottom line here is that the GH1 is a solid pick if you’re after a camera/camcorder hybrid — if you like the camera but don’t need the video capabilities, then the much cheaper DMC-G1 is worth a look as well.”
In some degrees I’m a bit of a stickler for tradition and I’m not all too bothered about video on DSLRs but with such an easy workflow it could tempt me to use it more. Of course this will all depend on the final product and as the camera I had was pre-production I couldn’t take any video or stills to see or show. What I can say is that the focusing is smooth, it works in video and the camera has plenty other things to offer.”
“In terms of video mode creativity, the GH1 can do certain things that are very difficult for conventional camcorders to achieve. Control and exploitation of depth of field blur is one. Camcorders have much smaller sensors, which results in a much greater depth of in-focus scene area, both in front of, and behind the main subject. By shooting with a fast aperture setting, the GH1 can creatively blur parts of the scene through limited depth of field.”

Press Release

Las Vegas, NV (March 3, 2009) – Panasonic today introduced the DMC-GH1, the newest member of the company’s revolutionary LUMIX G Micro System – a new digital interchangeable lens camera system that delivers professional-level features and performance in a compact and easy-to-use camera body.

Compatible with the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the new LUMIX GH1 features advanced video photography functions, such as the ability to record High Definition (HD) AVCHD 1080p/24p video.* In addition, the new LUMIX GH1 comes with a newly developed long-zoom interchangeable lens – the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. This lens was specifically designed to support HD movie recording and features a silent motor and continuous auto focusing (AF) capability; two features which distinguish the LUMIX GH1 from DSLRs that offer HD video recording capabilities.

“Photographers of all levels – professionals, amateurs and beginners – will be stunned by the range of creative possibilities that the LUMIX GH1 creates in the world of high-quality photography and HD video. Users will be equally amazed by the camera’s easy-to-use design and small size,” said David Briganti, National Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “Beyond its creative potential, the LUMIX GH1, a sister product to the award-winning LUMIX G1, is also innovative and differentiates itself from the pack by recording High Definition video with continuous AF, an indispensable feature for practical video recording.”

In late 2008, Panasonic redefined the traditional DSLR category with its launch of the Panasonic LUMIX G1 – a digital, interchangeable lens camera system that takes the radical step of eliminating the large, internal mirror structure that is currently contained in all traditional DSLR cameras. This innovation allows for dramatically smaller camera body and lens sizes and permits many new, advanced consumer features such as LUMIX G1 “Live View Finder”. With its 2008 launch, the LUMIX G1 achieved several honors, including:

- World’s first entry into the Micro Four Thirds Standard system camera segment
- World’s first interchangeable lens camera to offer colored body options to consumers
- Winner, 2008 Camera of the Year (Popular Photography & Imaging magazine)

The new LUMIX GH1 provides cutting-edge video recording features, including the ability to record high-resolution full HD (1920 x 1080) video at 24 fps or smooth HD video (1280 x 720) movie at 60 fps using an AVCHD format (MPEG-4/H.264). The AVCHD format provides the important benefit of doubling the HD quality recording time compared with Motion JPEG. The LUMIX GH1 hosts a dedicated video record button on the back of the camera which lets users instantly start recording videos, even while shooting still photos – removing the fear of potentially missing a must-see video moment. The LUMIX GH1 also records video in high-quality stereo sound via Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, the global standard of audio recording. An optional stereo microphone (DMW-MS1) is also available to achieve a more intensive sound recording experience. Finally, a convenient Wind Cut function is provided to help to block out distracting video background noise.

Like the LUMIX G1, the LUMIX GH1 features the Live View Finder system which enables something that simply is not possible with conventional DSLR cameras – the ability to preview the effects of camera settings (e.g., exposure, aperture, shutter speed) before taking the photo. This helps take the guesswork out of the camera setting process and helps users ensure that every photo they capture comes out exactly as they envisioned.

The brilliant 1,440,000-dot equivalent Live View Finder system can also display information settings that a user can see without removing their eyes from the subject. Furthermore, a built-in eye sensor automatically switches on the viewfinder when the user looks into it, then switches it off and turns on the swivel 3.0-inch large 460,000-dot high-resolution LCD when the user looks away from the viewfinder. The 60-frames-per-second Live View is made possible by the Live MOS sensor, which takes real-time signals directly from the image sensor and sends them continuously to the LCD. Both the Live View Finder and LCD provide a 100% field of view – allowing the user to accurately frame and compose a shot from most any position.

The LUMIX GH1 kit lens – the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. –provides a broad focal length range of 28-280mm (35mm camera equivalent) and supports continuous AF using the contrast AF system for both photo and movie capture. The low-noise lens design also seamlessly supports video recording by minimizing the mechanical sound generated by AF/AE actions.

At the core of the LUMIX GH1 lies a newly developed 12.1-megapixel high speed Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine HD, which features twin CPUs for outstanding processing capabilities. The Live MOS sensor is capable of high-speed readout over four channels to be compatible with full-HD movie recording. This sensor is also advantageous for photo recording with a high signal-to-noise ratio thanks to the new circuit structure that is unaffected by the noise generated in each of the circuits. This results in crisp photos – even those taken at high ISO levels. The multi-aspect type sensor allows users to take photos in 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratios with the same angle of view. The Venus Engine HD is also energy efficient, supporting long periods of AVCHD video recording on a single battery charge.

In addition to the digital camera’s HD video recording capability, the DMC-GH1 features the LUMIX Creative Movie mode which lets the user manually set the shutter speed and aperture, making their videos more creative and representative of their own personal video style preference. Changing the shutter speed gives the videos a special look, particularly suitable for shooting fast-moving subjects. Controlling the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at varying distances, so the user can focus on the foreground and blur the background – or vice versa.

While the LUMIX DMC-GH1 has cutting-edge still image and video capture features, the LUMIX GH1 is also incredibly easy-to-use, thanks to Panasonic’s iA (Intelligent Auto) mode** – a user-friendly setting made popular in the LUMIX line of digital point-and-shoot camera products. Panasonic’s iA mode is a suite of technologies which engage automatically (no settings needed). The latest addition to the iA suite of features is Face Recognition, a feature that directs the camera to prioritize focus and exposure on a specific face that that the user had previously registered in the camera.*** This invaluable function makes it especially easy to take sharp and beautifully exposed images of things the user values most in their photos – the user’s friends and family.

Panasonic’s iA mode offers other innovative features which help deliver consistently outstanding photos: O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) to help reduce blurring from hand-shake; Intelligent ISO Control to help limit motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken; AF Tracking that lets the camera lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves; Intelligent Exposure which optimizes the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights, and helps ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully; and Intelligent Scene Selector which automatically detects the five most common shooting situations – Portrait, Night Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery and Close-up – and switches to the appropriate Scene mode.

Best of all, the benefits of Panasonic’s iA mode extend to motion image recording on the DMC-GH1. For example, the LUMIX GH1 motion iA includes O.I.S. and Face Detection, which automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change to prevent blown highlights and blocked shadows. Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Close-up, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the environment.

The Contrast AF system adopted by the LUMIX GH1 is accurate, easy-to-use and fast. Users can choose from a wide range of AF modes, including multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas, 1-area AF with a selectable focus area, Face Detection, and AF Tracking. To help keep the images free of spots from dust and particles, the Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction system helps prevent foreign contaminants from adhering to the image sensor.

After users capture their images using the LUMIX GH1, it’s easy for them to enjoy their photos or HD videos immediately on a large-screen Panasonic VIERA® high-definition television. All that is required is to remove the SD Memory Card from the LUMIX GH1 and insert it into the VIERA Image Viewer (SDHC/SD Memory Card slot) located in the VIERA HDTV or in the Panasonic Blu-ray disc player. Alternatively, an optional mini HDMI™ cable is available to output the images from the LUMIX GH1 directly to the Panasonic HDTV via VIERA Link™. Then, using the VIERA HDTV’s remote control, users can take advantage of the LUMIX GH1’s advanced playback and slideshow features.

In addition to the new LUMIX G lenses, the DMC-GH1 and LUMIX G Micro System is compatible with any interchangeable lens that complies with the Four Thirds standard.**** This gives users access to the entire range of Four Thirds lenses. Additional Micro Four Thirds lenses will be announced in the future, giving users a large, diverse line of high-performance lenses to add to their photographic toolboxes. With the LUMIX G Micro System and the growing assortment of lenses becoming available, the creative possibilities are endless.

The LUMIX DMC-GH1 is a system camera with a wide variety of options to choose from to match a wide range of shooting situations and styles. Accessories compatible with the LUMIX G Micro System include: External Flash: DMW-FL220(GN22) / DMW-FL360(GN36) / DMW-FL500(GN50); PL Filter: DMW-LPL62; ND Filter: DMW-LND62 (New); MC Protector: DMW-LMCH62; Mount Adapter: DMW-MA1; Stereo Microphone: DMW-MS1 (New); Battery Pack: DMW-BLB13; DC Cable: DMW-DCC3; Soft Cases: DMW-CG1, DMW-CG2 (New); Soft Bag: DMW-BAG1; Shoulder Strap (Stylish) DMW-SSTG1-A/C/R/K(New); Shoulder Strap (Woven) DMW-SSTG2-W; Shoulder Strap (Leather) DMW-SSTG3-T; Remote Shutter: DMW-RSL1.

“This is an excellent pocket camera that’s easy to recommend if you don’t need more advanced manual controls or the best possible HD video. “This is a good all round snapshot digital camera. It produces good photos in most situations and the extra zoom should come in handy. Shutter lag and turn on times are extremely impressive.”
“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 might not seem like an astonishing camera, but its combination of new technologies and materials, generally excellent photo quality and performance, and healthy feature set geared toward snapshooters makes it a standout pocket megazoom. “
“The ZR1/ZX1 is a really nice camera to use; it feels solid and well built, and yet is small enough to easily slip into your pocket.
