Photo quality is about what you would expect for a camera under $200. It is not what they considered great but on the other hand it was not poor. Pictures taken with the 7010 were a little on the flat side indicated the reviewer however the colors were sharp and were rendered accurately. If you are headed into low light situation you can expect some additional noise in your images.
“At the end of the day the 7010 is a little confusing. Sure the specifications looks impressive but the test is in the pudding and with the 7010’s average photo quality, elevated image noise, and a bad battery life it fails to meet expectations. For the price it does pack some nice features but my recommendation would be to look elsewhere in the sub $200 camera lineup.”
“Here is a camera that does not need a lot of user intervention and they really don’t need to know much about photography, however, video capture is nothing to write home about.”
“The Stylus 7010 / mju-7010 is an interesting looking camera with a decent specification. Build quality and finish are of a high standard, it is versatile and easy to use, and it is capable of producing good results in most normal situations. However its poor low light performance, limited battery duration, lack of advanced features and relatively high price make it less appealing in comparison to some very capable rivals.”
“Certainly performance at ISO 400 and above is a let down – as are the rather cool, slightly washed out results delivered when shooting on the camera’s standard default settings. On the plus side the latest Mju is for the most part responsive and intuitive to use, and shouldn’t tax its target audience.”

With its stylish exterior, the 12 Megapixel µ-7010 is the perfect blend of elegance and substance. It features a Magic Filters mode, which allows photographers to give their pictures a whole new flair. Pop Art, for example, infuses images with striking colour to make them more intense and vivid.

Additional amazing creative effects include Pin Hole, Sketch, and Fish-Eye. And framing or viewing the resulting masterpieces is easy thanks to the versatile 7x wide optical zoom (28-196mm*) and generous 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal II LCD.

Another impressive new function is AF tracking, which guarantees that even moving subjects are perfectly in focus at all times. Dual IS performance further ensures that every shot is crystal clear. Meanwhile, the innovative i-Auto mode automatically identifies five commonly-encountered types of scenes and adjusts settings accordingly.

What’s more, you never need to worry about looking your best with the smart µ-7010: Beauty Mode smoothes out imperfections from the final image for a fresh complexion. In-Camera Panorama mode is also included for particularly expansive shots in the great outdoors or artistic fun in the city.

The new member of the classic µ series comes with 39 languages on board. Its comprehensive suite of powerful and practical features is rounded out by xD-Picture Card and microSD** compatibility. The Olympus µ-7010 hits stores in August 2009 along with a new software version: Olympus Master 2.2 for more image management and editing possibilities.

The Olympus µ-7010 – main features:

- 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal II LCD for excellent preview even in brilliant sunlight and at extreme angles (230,000 dots)
- 12 Megapixels to make poster-size prints
- The easy way to perfect images – Intelligent Auto Mode (i-Auto) detects the five most commonly used scenes and adjusts settings, focus and exposure automatically
- Advanced Face Detection of up to 16 persons for perfectly focused and exposed faces plus correct exposure of other image areas
- Sharp photos wherever your subject moves thanks to AF tracking
- Spice up your pictures with built-in Magic Filters
- TruePic III image processor for faster image handling and higher image quality
- Liven up your memories with movie recording with sound (up to VGA resolution at 30fps)
- xD-Picture Card and microSD** Card compatible

* Equivalent to a 35mm camera
** microSD is a trademark of the SD Card Association
Appendix

Advanced Face Detection Technology A technology that searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed. Advanced Face Detection Technology can detect up to 16 faces.

AF tracking This system tracks the moving subject automatically and keeps it continually in focus for pictures that are optimally focused and exposed. It also memorises subject data even when the subject goes out of frame and resumes tracking when it reappears.

Beauty Mode Beauty mode touches up the appearance of subjects even while the shot is being taken. This feature recognises faces and automatically makes skin on the face and adjacent areas appear smoother, brighter and more youthful.

Dual Image Stabilisation Providing two-fold protection, this special function helps to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or fast-moving subjects. It combines high ISO values with a CCD-based mechanical image stabiliser, where a built-in gyro sensor detects camera movement and adjusts the CCD accordingly.

In-Camera Panorama mode A mode allowing users to instantly compose panoramas of approx. 130° right inside the camera. By framing each shot in step with the on-screen guide, exciting panoramic scenes can be stitched together for a more realistic and emotional depiction of any landscape or skyline.

i-Auto mode This “intelligent-Auto” mode uses advanced automatic detection technology to allow the camera to recognise the five most commonly used scenes automatically. They enable the capture of perfect photos without any need for manual settings.

Magic Filters Enables special artistic effects to be created directly in the camera.

Pop Art: Enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid to create high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
Fish-Eye: Reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish eye lens, lending a new perspective to the whole scene with a “round” effect.
Sketch: Gives the impression that subjects have been sketched by an artist by transforming images into line drawings.
Pin Hole: Reduces the peripheral brightness like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.

microSD compatibilityA special attachment comes bundled with this camera which provides for microSD card compatibility in addition to being able to use xD-Picture Cards.

TruePic III image processorThis Olympus processing engine automatically enhances important aspects of image quality including: Colour reproduction (colour range, saturation and brightness), picture sharpness (reduced image noise, improved edge reproduction), as well as providing faster processing speeds.

“For one thing this camera is just too large for folks interested in upgrading. No flash. Now this is going to be a real problem for a lot of people who might have bought it otherwise. Compared to full DSLR the E-P1 does not offer that large of a size advantage and the fact that it does not have a viewfinder will probably end a ot of potential sales.”
“Bottom line – the slightly delayed focusing, middles of the road screen resolution and no onboard flash deny the E-P1 from receiving our top recommendation, but it still is a great camera, and depending on your personality could be the camera you have always been looking for. Micro Four Thirds is also creating lots of excitement in the digital photography world and we are curious how it will mature.”
“You get all the advantages of digital without the bulk of a DSLRa. The camera is small while the lens is compact and lightweight.
II’m not so thrilled with the LCD being the sole viewfinder, unless you’re using the 17m lens with its associated optical finder: in bright sun the LCD screen is practically useless, with the focusing indicators rendered.”
“The shutter lag is frustrating, though, it isn’t quite as compact as we’d truly like, and then of course there’s the price. In short, it isn’t the ideal universal travel camera, but if you’ve been waiting for a true rangefinder-style digital at a vaguely sensible price, the PEN E-P1 fits the bill.”
“What’s Hot: High-resolution, color-accurate images. Low noise up to ISO 800 and usable images at ISO 1600. Head-turning, retrostyle design.
What’s Not: No built-in flash or optical viewfinder. Sluggish autofocus, especially in low light. Micro Four Thirds lens selection is limited, but growing”
“We fell in love with the E-P1 the moment we took it from the box. So we bought one! We know that for years we have been advising readers not to buy cameras without proper viewfinders, and now look what we’ve done. Well, we were right – an LCD is no substitute. It is morning, and we still love her, but we are not blind to her flaws. She is gorgeous but cranky and demands that we do it her way. When was love ever any different?”
“Without making too much of a song and dance about it, the E-P1’s video mode is fairly impressive. Though it won’t tempt movie connoisseurs, as it offers only 720p high definition and no audio input, the results still look impressive, and can be output at 1080i if required. Plus, the ability to use the Art Filters, aperture priority and shutter priority for video means you can still get creative.”
“But the Olympus E-P1 with the 17mm lens hits the right spots for this photographer: great still image performance, very usable high ISO images, good optical quality, a prime lens with more to come, easy portability, and a certain charm that makes you want to take pictures. Hard to beat that. The Olympus E-P1 is a revolutionary design, and a Dave’s Pick.”
“Olympus seems to have made great strides with the other one-time weakness of Four Thirds sensors – high-ISO performance. ” I’d get an E-P1 to take anywhere to shoot anything that holds reasonably still. Unlike pocket cameras, the Olympus E-P1 is reasonably competent for shooting slowly-moving subjects. “The problem is that, without fixing all the little details, the Olympus E-P1 is very vulnerable to competition. I’m betting that the Panasonic GF1 doesn’t have the same problems, which is bad news for Olympus fans. So Olympus needs to get the E-P2 out quickly, and they need to address all the little things that are wrong with their initial offering. First to market is only good if you can protect the position. “Both the Sigma DP2 and the Olympus EP-1 deserve kudos for coming out ahead of the big boys— Canon and Nikon—and trying to meet those challenges but, in the end, these two cameras are a letdown. Of the two models, the EP-1 is definitely the superior camera and is being offered for about the same price. While it’s a beautiful looking camera with a first-rate HD video feature with fantastic sound, the frustratingly slow autofocus speed and its image noise issue at ISO 800 and above will limit where and when you’ll want to use the EP-1.”
“Shooting scenes with both highlights and shadows can often be dicey because of the extreme contrast between dark and bright areas. The E-P1 addresses this challenge with Shadow Adjustment Technology that adjusts for extreme light variations and maintains visible detail in both the shadow and highlight areas of the scene.”
“Yes, it handles noise decently and produces solid images; however, there’s a lot more that goes into the process. We need a competent and reliable autofocus system in order to make sure we capture the moment. If you aren’t going to take photos of living subjects, I suppose you could make the Olympus E-P1 work for you. Alternatively, if you want to look cool and have people compliment you on how cool your camera is, you should check this camera out.”
“The E-P1 combines an intelligent Auto mode that attempts to recognize the scene before you and match it up to a preset scene mode with the traditional program, aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual shooting modes. On the other, I can’t tell you how frustratingly slow this camera is if you’re used to the speed of a DSLR. Despite this fundamental flaw, the E-P1 makes a superb photographic tool for photographers who are willing to take their time with photography. “Manual focusing is confusing and difficult without an optical viewfinder. Autofocus not entirely reliable. No included flash. Maximum aperture of f3.5 in the kit lens is disappointing. “Here’s the easiest way for me to summarize my thoughts on the Olympus E-P1: If you’re taking action shots, consider something else. If you’re not, then it’s absolutely worth a look. The combination of size, style, photo quality, and features is hard to beat. Just like with the pioneering E-330 three years ago, if you can live with the E-P1’s trade offs then you’ll find that it’s a fun and capable interchangeable lens camera.”
“I think E-P1 is a niche camera for street shooters and those who NEED to travel light; at least for now with its premium price tag. For the same price, one can get the ‘dual lens kit’ for the Olympus E620, which is almost the same camera with better overall value, improved more-SLR-like ergonomics, a flip-out and rotate LCD and faster performance, but minus the ‘cool’ factor and movie mode of the E-P1. So you need to know what you’re doing before swiping the plastic for the Olympus E-P1.”
“You take a few pictures, and now you’re certifiably in love: they are spectacular. “Maybe Olympus has some better, more compact, more functional version of a Micro Four-Thirds camera around the corner – but it might be better to wait for now. The E-P1, as currently configured, looks too expensive and inflexible to be an “intermediate” camera and neither functional nor small enough to be a compact for serious photographers. It certainly does not evoke Olympus’ history of brilliant engineering and execution. If you can read this, Olympus, let’s see an improved E-P2 on the next go-round.”
“The Olympus E-P1 is an interesting and innovative camera, and as a first model in what will probably be a series it has some very nice features. “I applaud Olympus’s PEN E-P1. The camera world is badly in need of new ideas even if they’re not entirely new. Taking advantage of the PEN’s 50th anniversary was an inspiration that has injected welcome excitement into the camera marketplace, rather like the 2006 introduction of the Leica M8. Relatively few people can, or are willing to, spring for Leica’s pricey digital rangefinder. But the E-P1 is within reach of a broad segment of photo enthusiasts and is reportedly already selling very well.”
“The Micro Four Thirds shooter is using a new imaging processor, the TruePic V engine, which was developed for the new snapper. “First, the Olympus E-P1’s image quality won’t be held to the standard of bigger, heavier digital SLRs; even when it is compared — which it will be — people will make allowances for any shortcomings they see; if they see any at all. “This is not a speed monster, but a model that is based on a platform that gives life to an entire new camera segment, created by Olympus. “For the E-P1, Olympus went back to the drawing board, or at least, back to the filing cabinet. Vintage camera nuts will immediately recognize the aesthetic influence of Olympus’s classic Pen F – a half-frame 35mm camera from the middle of the last century, and one of the manufacturer’s early attempts at miniaturization – in the converging body lines of the E-P1’s top panel.”

This is a practical camera whose size and form factor make it usable in places that larger cameras wouldn’t work as well or possibly not at all. I’m seeing very detailed and sharp results up to ISO 1,250. After years of shooting 35mm, DSLR and even large format I’d have to say this is the most fun I’ve had with any camera I’ve owned. Its a camera guy’s camera that the beginner can use as well.
It is small, it is fancy, it is so nice you will be willing to give it a kiss. It has nice rigid and solid feel. It has everything I need need and nothing I don’t. It feel like a treat, like a candy. The satisfaction of using it, I mean the personal feelings are the same that made me a photographer some 35 years ago. The image quality is just above any concerns.

Press Excerpt

Hamburg, 16 June 2009 – When Olympus launched the legendary Pen series of cameras in 1959, this bold and revolutionary achievement rewrote the history of photography. Designed by renowned style guru Yoshihisa Maitani, the Pen represented the perfect marriage of simplicity, style and performance. Five decades later the Olympus passion for innovation is still setting the pace.

With the release of the E-P1, the digital era’s next generation Olympus Pen has arrived: mirrors are no longer a necessary component for digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. The first groundbreaking Olympus Micro Four Thirds model impresses with its incredibly small size, retro style, and ease of use – without giving up any of the benefits of D-SLR quality.

This new ultra-compact hybrid device can even record HD quality movies with depth of field and Art Filter effects familiar from still photography. Naturally, the E-P1 packs all the advantages of Olympus imaging technology e.g. image stabilisation, a dust reduction system, and bright interchangeable lenses. It will be available for purchase in July 2009.

Technology and design in perfect harmony
Combining modern technology with the timeless style of the classic Olympus Pen series, the removal of the mirror box allows the Olympus Pen E-P1 to be reduced to a remarkably compact size. Such mirror-less construction is also the foundation for a stunning new design.

A stylish metal finish and the optional FL-14 flash give the camera a retro-look reminiscent of the classic Olympus Pen F. Through its compactness and usability this legendary camera became one of the most popular and revolutionary products in the history of photography.

Not just a pretty face: D-SLR quality in compact form
To match its high-end look, the E-P1 has been fitted with the latest innovative Olympus technologies to deliver D-SLR quality images. In addition to in-camera image stabilisation, it is accompanied by the first Olympus interchangeable lenses specially designed for the new Micro Four Thirds format: the M. ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm 1:2.8 Pancake (34mm*) and M. ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 (28-84mm*) lenses.

To guarantee a wide range of shooting styles, the new model is compatible with all Micro Four Thirds lenses and, via an adapter, the full range of existing Four Thirds lenses. Adapters are also available for OM lenses and those made by other manufacturers. For unbeatable precision, a 12.3 Megapixel Live MOS sensor and the Olympus Pen E-P1’s new TruePic V image processor ensure all your precious memories are saved as crisp and clear images or movies.

The new processing engine guarantees ultra-high processing speeds as well as professional image quality at up to an incredible ISO 6400. It also enables the application of Art Filters to both movies and still images.

New modes for unlimited self-expression
The E-P1 boasts a variety of creative E-System features allowing photographers to explore new artistic possibilities. Inspired by the semi-professional E-30, a choice of six Art Filters lends images a new flair. The Pop Art filter, for example, infuses a picture with colour in order to create a more intense, joyful feel. Further fantastic filters include Pin Hole, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Colour, Light Tone and Grainy Film.

And so you’re never left wondering what your party would have looked like through a kaleidoscope, they can also be applied right in the camera after a picture has been taken. Other effects can be created using the Multi Exposure mode, which allows several RAW images to be superimposed in real-time. Multiple Exposure masterpieces can then be created on the fly in shooting mode, or later in editing mode. Creativity is further supported with a choice of four aspect ratios. What’s more, the E-P1 truly breaks new ground with the option of video recordings that were previously impossible.

Not only does the cutting-edge video function allow the application of Art Filters, but it also includes the ability to vary depth of field, angle of view, and autofocus during recording. And of course, this can be done with all lenses. It records up to an incredible 5 minutes of high-resolution HD (1280×720p) at 30fps in one single shot. The result? You’ll never miss a crucial moment – from the highlight of the party to that flashed smile on the catwalk. Movies can be recorded and played back in AVI format, at both standard 4:3 or wide screen 16:9 aspect ratios.

To take the guesswork out of achieving sharp focus, shifting electronic image stabilisation (Digital IS) ensures perfect pictures every time. Convenient transfer and viewing on modern displays is no problem since the Olympus Pen E-P1 is HDMI compatible. And since some memories look particularly good framed on the wall, high-resolution still images can be shot at the touch of a button while recording movies.

The E-P1’s high quality stereo recording ability will ensure your movies sound crisp and clear, whether you want to film your own music video or send a heartfelt message to a friend. It benefits from Olympus’ latest audio technologies, including high quality PCM recording.

Effortless handling and full control
The newly developed Live Control interface ensures effortless operation: it is incredibly easy to use and the effects of selected functions can be viewed immediately on the 7.6cm/3.0” HyperCrystal LCD. In addition to easy focusing for sharp and crisp shots, an intelligent i-Auto option also allows the camera to automatically adjust to six common scene modes such as portrait, landscape and night.

What’s more, subjects can be sure they will always look their best with e-Portrait – a practical option that smoothes away wrinkles and eliminates imperfections and blemishes. This way everyone can look like a top model, especially when they appear on TV via the practical HDMI output. SD card compatibility eliminates concerns about storage by providing ample space for recorded images and movies as well as convenient file storage and transfer.

A must have for style hounds and those seeking unbeatable performance without the weight and clumsiness of traditional D-SLRs, the Olympus Pen E-P1 is available in two stylish options: silver or white. The new model and its two accompanying Micro Four Thirds lenses will hit stores in July 2009.

“The impression that lasted for a long period of time after having testing the Olympus E450, is the feeling of ease and pleasure of photographing. The camera has strong features in that respect, which are not reflected directly in the technical specifications, but, in practice these certainly come out.”
“I like some of the features that Olympus have put on the E-450 and I think it could do well as long as people start to understand that FourThirds isn’t a bad system to buy into. It works easily enough I can just see a lot of newcomers to photography being turned off because of all the buttons on the body. Image quality is great, though, as is noise control and colour rendition. If you can see past the complexity of the buttons then you will bag yourself a lovely little camera.”
“Although the E-450 is a budget model, it’s not been dumbed down and keen photographers will find it gives them all the hands-on control they want, without burying the technicalities, and that’s a large part of its charm.”
“What the E-450 offers over the E-420, which can be had for even less? A subtly different LCD screen and processing engine aside, the difference is limited to the three Art Filters, present in the E-450 but absent from the E-420. The Art Filters are well implemented and admittedly fun to use, but are they enough to sway you away from the cheaper E-420? Only you can tell.”

More Details:
A creative powerhouse
Developed with amateurs in mind, the easy-to-use Olympus E-450 brings a high performance D-SLR to users with unbridled imaginations. A range of Art Filters allows photographers to stretch the limits of their creativity, without complicated software or a computer. Introduced with the E-30, this function gives pictures a make-over by selecting from one of three Art Filters.

Inspired by the kaleidoscopic colours of the pop art movement, the Pop Art effect, for example, infuses photographs with rich shades to give pictures a livelier, dynamic feel. Soft Focus, on the other hand, makes pictures seem ethereal and otherworldly, while Pin Hole gives images an air of secrecy. Framing shots perfectly is also a breeze with the generous 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal II LCD with 176° viewing angle, which allows you to shoot from virtually any perspective and is even brighter than the E-420’s.

The Live View functionality with the camera’s contrast AF** capabilities, on the other hand, allows you to comfortably judge exactly what results to expect, even before images are shot. This way, what you see is what you get, no matter what the perspective! Further guaranteeing pictures are optimally exposed, Face Detection Technology automatically detects and focuses on faces while Shadow Adjustment Technology balances out shadowy areas. 28 shooting modes, including automatic, semi-automatic and manual shooting options, ensure complete versatility. Nice pictures at the touch of a button – what more could you ask for?

Trusted and true
Olympus has packed the E-450 with everything an entry-level photographer needs to take high-quality pictures. It is equipped with Olympus’ proprietary dust reduction system, the Supersonic Wave Filter, which protects from the threat of dust – and has become the world’s leading solution against dust on the image sensor.

Additionally, a powerful 10 Megapixel Live MOS sensor provides incredible resolution for crisp, detailed shots. This is supported by the incorporation of the TruePic III+ image processor: it guarantees exceptionally true-to-life image reproduction while reducing noise and enhancing processing speed. It is possible to shoot at up to 3.5fps in full Megapixel mode with up to eight images in RAW buffer. Compact and light, the E-450 boasts all the advantages of Four Thirds and Olympus state-of-the-art technology in a handy format everyone can appreciate.

Full range of accessories
The Olympus E-450 is compatible with nearly all E-System accessories, such as 19 lenses with a focal range of 7 – 300mm (equivalent to 14 – 600mm on a 35mm camera) and various flash systems. A perfect companion for this compact model, for example, is the short-barreled and lightweight ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 (equivalent to 50mm on a 35mm camera) Pancake lens.

The E-System D-SLR newcomer also ensures perfect light no matter what with up to three Wireless Flash groups familiar from the professional E-3. Available are the FL-50R and FL-36R wireless flashes. And in any situation where a flash is needed, new robust Olympus Flash Brackets, such as the FL-BK04, guarantee good light and maximum flexibility. Two flashes can also be mounted on the practical FL-BKM03 Twin Flash Bracket.

Rookie creative types will find everything they want from a digital SLR in the E-450. One easy-to-use package unites Olympus technology and incredible E-System features such as the Supersonic Wave Filter and Live View with artistic options like Art Filters. Look for the new E-450 in stores as of the end of May 2009 at a retail price of €xxx

Art Filters
Enables special artistic effects to be created directly in the camera. The following Art Filters are available in the Olympus E-450

- Pop Art: Enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid to create high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
- Soft Focus: Creates a soft tone which gives pictures an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere. It renders pictures as though they were veiled in heavenly light, without obscuring details such as the hair or flower petals.
- Pin Hole: Reduces the peripheral brightness like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.

Face Detection Technology
A technology that searches for faces in a composition and recognises them as the main subject. It then automatically puts them in focus and optimally adjusts exposure to create an image that’s sharp in the right places and ideally exposed.

HyperCrystal
A high-grade, semi-transmissive technology used in LCDs, which employs an additional layer at the bottom of the LCD to reflect light from external light sources. This enhances the brightness of the LCD, so even in direct sunlight images are displayed sharply and with improved contrast compared to that of conventional displays. Also, it provides for particularly wide viewing angles without glare or shadow, so images can be framed from a variety of angles and viewed by several people at once.

Live View
Provides an alternative to framing shots through the viewfinder on a digital SLR camera. The image sent through the lens to the image sensor is displayed directly on the camera’s LCD. Whereas most compact digital cameras have been equipped with Live View functionality for many years, this feature has only recently become available on D-SLRs. The world’s first D-SLR to feature continuous Live View capabilities was the Olympus E-330.

RC Wireless Flash Control
The user can control wireless flash units remotely – eliminating the need for extra cables – by using the built-in flash as the system’s master unit. Control options include the ability to independently regulate flash mode and compensation settings for up to three groups of flashes, four channel settings to avoid interference as well as a wide range of brightness levels.

Shadow Adjustment Technology
A technology designed to improve exposure for pictures with dark areas. Using a sensor that works much like the human eye, dark parts of a composition (e.g. a shadow under a tree) are identified and the camera then adjusts the exposure settings accordingly for those areas. The result is a more realistic and detailed picture.

Supersonic Wave Filter
Dust entering digital SLRs, for example during lens changes, can cause damage to photos – unless it is removed. With the Supersonic Wave Filter, the potential for dust to ruin photos is eliminated. A transparent filter is located between the camera’s shutter and sensor. It makes sure no dust is able to land on the sensor. Instead, the particles settle on the filter and are then shaken off by a series of ultrasonic vibrations generated by the filter when activated. Olympus was the first manufacturer to incorporate dust protection in D-SLRs.

TruePic III+ image processor
Olympus’ latest-generation image processing engine. It automatically enhances important aspects of image quality including: colour reproduction (colour range, saturation and brightness), picture sharpness (reduced image noise, improved edge reproduction), as well as providing faster processing speeds. Furthermore, it supports Art Filters to enable unprecedented creative expression.

“It is clear that the Mju 9000 scores only moderately, and should be improved on several points in order to reach comparable test results like the PowerShot SX200 IS or Lumix DMC-TZ7 cameras of Canon and Panasonic respectively. Without these improvements, the Olympus Mju 9000 is unlikely to be around for long.”
“This camera is geared for the casual shooter looking for focal power and full automatic controls and it doesn’t demand all the precision of a more expensive camera with more manual control. The camera is a great travel companion, but it can’t be pushed past the limits of a snap shooting camera. The Stylus-9000 is what it is, an entry-level to intermediate point-and-shoot with some cool features.”
“Picture quality is not perfect, but the flaws only become noticeable if you are planning to make larger prints. The Olympus MJU 9000 is certainly a very handy size for a camera offering this much zoom.”
“Despite its professional look, the Mju 9000 didn’t quite deliver as expected especially in the image quality department. But if you are not fussy about image quality and just want a user-friendly, long-zoom compact, then perhaps you can consider this Olympus. If not, the SX200 IS or TZ7 may just be a better bet.”
“What began as an impressive display of features and build quality slowly soured as I used the camera more and more. If this camera can be kept in normal balanced daylight that’s bright enough to use a low ISO then the results will be acceptable. That’s the problem, though. I’d expect them to be more than acceptable as a camera that sits higher than others in its range and no flashy graphics or lit up buttons can change that.”
“Overall, there is plenty to like about this camera — it has a great zoom lens, useful in-camera editing and panorama stitching. You might have to play around with it in order to get the image quality you’re after, but it definitely has the ability to produce clear and vibrant images.”
“Don’t buy this camera if: – You want to shoot raw files (this camera is JPEG only). – You’d like to adjust aperture and shutter speed settings. – You want to shoot widescreen or high-definition video (VGA at 30 frames/second is the best this camera offers). – You want good low light performance.”
“Well the Olympus offers a good zoom and some nice features, however we weren’t overly impressed with the image quality or the button layout on the rear of the camera. Images seemed flat when reproduced, and although our test day was on the overcast side in terms of weather, even the bit of sun we did get didn’t lift our spirits or image colour that much.”
“The Olympus Mju 9000 is a sensibly designed and well made camera with a very useful zoom range. It is easy to use, performs well and produces good results in most situations. However the lack of some important features such as an AF assist lamp or any colour adjustments limit its appeal somewhat, especially considering the relatively high price.”
“The Olympus mju 9000 still has its main advantage of being smaller and lighter than its rivals, especially when compared to the Canon SX200 IS, and it certainly won’t disappoint if you decide it meets all your needs. A good first attempt at the travel zoom by Olympus, but it ultimately falls short of the high standards set by Canon and particularly Panasonic.”
“In terms of appearance and overall functionality, the Mju 9000 is one of the nicest Olympus compacts we’ve tested in quite some time. It’s a little bulkier than usual thanks to the 10x optical zoom but for the most part this is the pick of the bunch if you’re looking at buying an Olympus.”
“The Olympus Stylus 9000 is suited for casual/leisure picture-taking in well lit conditions (its movie mode is not fantastic). It’s not particularly speedy, there are no manual controls and pictures are usable only up to ISO 400. I would only recommend (even then, not whole-heartedly) the Stylus 9000 if you MUST absolutely have the smallest 10X zoom camera in the market.”
“The Olympus mju 9000’s a fairly smart little camera. It beats the latest Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ6 and DMC-TZ7 with 12 megapixels to their 10, but they’ve got a 12x zoom instead. While the 9000 has an attractive finish, the TZ6 and TZ7 are ever-so-slightly neater and more elegant, although you may disagree.”

Press Release

London, 7 January 2009 – The popular Olympus µ series is once again setting the standard for cameras that combine graceful design with practical innovative features. Confirming Olympus’ status as the leading developer of opto-digital technology, the new models feature compact optical zooms, with magnifications ranging from 5x in the µ-5000, 7x in the µ-7000, to an incredible 10x in the Stylus 9000. All three cameras feature 12 Megapixel CCDs and a host of features that guarantee brilliant results, including Dual Image Stabilization to reduce the effect of camera shake, and a remarkable Beauty Mode that smooths out the completions of people, knocking years of their age! With sleek metal bodies in a range of colors, the Olympus µ-5000 will be available at the end of January, while the µ-9000 and µ-7000 in stores mid February 2009.

Stylus 9000
Hidden inside its super-slim metal body the Stylus 9000 has a wide 10x optical zoom (28-280mm*) that’s powerful enough to capture wide, open landscapes and then zoom in to closely scrutinize details on the horizon. Of course the µ-9000 is great for photographing people too. Face Detection Technology identifies up to three human faces in a photo, then focuses and sets the exposure so that they look their best, and the wide viewing angles of the bright 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal III LCD make framing photos easy even in bright sunlight and at awkward angles. The µ-9000 will be available in Midnight Black and Royal Blue versions.

As with the other two new additions to the “classic” µ series, the µ-9000 includes Dual Image Stabilization. This reduces blur caused by camera shake by minutely adjusting the position of their 12 Megapixel CCDs to compensate for inadvertent camera movement, and uses higher ISO values to ensure faster shutter speeds

Handling and navigation on the new cameras is easy thanks to illuminated buttons and all models are compatible with xD-Picture Cards and microSD Cards**. The Olympus µ-5000 will be on sale from the end of January, while the µ-9000 and µ-7000 will become available in mid February 2009.

The Olympus Stylus 9000 – main features:

- Extra slim 10x wide optical zoom (28-280mm*) in a compact metal body to capture landscapes through to exciting close-ups
- Avoids blur thanks to Dual Image Stabilization (combines mechanical and digital image stabiliser)
- The easy way to perfect images – Intelligent Auto Mode detects the five most commonly used scenes and adjusts settings, focus and exposure automatically
- 12 Megapixels to make prints up to poster-size
- 6.9cm/2.7″ HyperCrystal III LCD for best ever preview even in brilliant sunlight and at extreme angles (230,000 dots)
- Face Detection for perfectly focused and exposed faces. In combination with Shadow Adjustment Technology other main parts of the picture are also correctly exposed.
- TruePic III image processor for faster image handling and higher image quality
- Liven up your memories with movie recording with sound (up to VGA resolution at 30fps) xD-Picture Card and microSD Card** compatible

“Is it unbridled zoom power you’re after? The 26x Olympus SP-590 UZ might be the camera for you. Do you attach more importance to the look, feel, and user experience of your camera? Take another look at the Nikon Coolpix P90. Bottom line – there are no losers here.”

<a href="http://www.cameras.co.uk/reviews/olympus-sp-590uz.cfm" target="_blank"rel="nofollow">Cameras.uk
“If it is plenty of zoom you are after you will struggle to find more than the 26x zoom on offer here. The camera does a good all round job and achieves what it sets out to do. It has a set of manual exposure controls and a wide angle lens.”
“Olympus has really made some improvements with the SP-590UZ. While many features have been carried over, the 590’s increased performance really helps this camera shine in a category that is becoming more and more competitive. With great image quality, speedy performance, loads of exposure options, and a generous 26x optical zoom lens, the SP-590 has a lot to offer.”

<a href="http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Olympus-SP-590UZ-Digital-Camera-Review-20931.htm" target="_blank"rel="nofollow">DigitalCameraInfo
“To put it bluntly, the zoom difference from 20x to 26x just isn’t that significant. While the Olympus performed well enough in most tasks, there are simply better choices out there for around the same price point.”

“We debated on the rating of the SP-590UZ’s photo quality. It’s not bad, and if you’re not picky, you’ll probably be very happy with the photos. However, even at low sensitivities (ISO 64 and ISO 100) our photos displayed visible noise, a lack of sharpness and had that painterly artifact quality usually associated with higher ISO images, which makes prints look soft.”

LetsGoDigital
“It is in fact the super mega zoom feature of the Olympus SP-590 UZ that lets us down. It seems Olympus went just one step too far. The specifications are beautiful, 26x zoom and high resolution with many setting options, but in practice the camera does not live up to its expectations. If you expect good quality and all-round photography, you’d better look for a DSLR.”

CNET
“Ultimately, the Olympus SP-590 UZ ranks as a functional but not particularly notable megazoom. While none of the current models have a 26x zoom lens, as with many megazooms the EVF makes it impractical to shoot the things most people want the long lens for–kids’ sports, for example. So you might as well go with an alternative: save money with a cheaper camera or got for a more expensive camera and get better image quality and performance.”

DigitalCameraReview
“Noise performance is average and the folks who live by the monitor on their point and shoots should plan to pack extra batteries (lots of extra batteries if they’re alkalines) for all-day outings. They’ll get lots of good stuff never venturing from the auto modes, but this camera does its best work when the user takes charge with the manual shooting options.”

DCResource (As compared to the Kodak EasyShare Z980, Nikon P90, Pentax X70)
“What I didn’t like: Dull colors out of the box, LCD on the small side, no IS in movie mode (unless you turn off sound recording), redeye a problem (though you can remove it in playback mode), plastic tripod mount, reliance on xD cards, lousy manual.”
“The camera’s zoom is quiet but it was slightly slow. Operation is on par with other advanced compact cameras we’ve tested, with shots taken quickly and an impressive 10 frames per second in the continuous shot mode in our testing. Interestingly, we did notice a faint but constant rhythmic ticking sound while the Olympus SP-590UZ was on — thankfully the camera didn’t explode. “

DPInterface
“The Olympus SP590’s operation, however, proved to be less user friendly than other super zoom cameras of its class. The SP590 has a Function menu which allows for quick access to certain shooting features (such as white balance and ISO), but for everything else, you’ll have to dig into the 5 page Camera Menu. The camera also lacks a control dial of any sort (ie rear rotary wheel or front command dial), so you’ll have to resort to tedious button mashing if you want to tweak exposure.”
“Buy this camera if: You’re looking for an ultra-zoom digicam with good wide-angle coverage, plenty of adjustable controls and image stabilisation – You want manual flash adjustment plus a good range of flash settings, along with the ability to work with multi-flash set-ups. – You’d enjoy taking very close ‘macro’ shots.”
“The Olympus SP-590UZ has most everything a beginner or serious amateur photographer needs ( only RAW file format and hot shoe are missing). Consider: super macro at 1 cm, satisfying wide-angle at 26mm, incredible tele reach at 676mm, full exposure flexibility with PASM, sensor-shift image stabilization, fast and precise AF in good and low lighting, a much improved menu system, and, more importantly, all of this packaged together so they work as a complete whole.”
“This is the “Hit or Miss” poster camera. The Olympus SP-590UZ would crank out a beautiful image in one shooting environment and then an exceedingly sub par image in the next. At close range, the SP-590UZ was great, but landscapes were bland and most colors lacked electricity.”
“Superzooms are tricky to recommend. Real photography enthusiasts will find they do a great deal but only tolerably well. The Olympus SP-590 UZ, however, is one of the best of the bunch and comes at a price that makes it well worth a punt.”
“The Olympus SP-590UZ has a lot to commend it. The price is good, and the overall design is attractive and functional, with very good handling. It performs well and it’s low light performance is especially good. However that title-capturing 26x zoom lens is far too big, produces inferior image quality and cannot be used at full zoom without a tripod. Image noise issues are also a problem.”
“Intuitive and well-featured compact bridge camera with a frankly amazing lens and focal range, which delivers good-looking images if taken in the right lighting conditions. It doesn’t fare so well in low-light, isn’t a great choice for keeping up with the action, and feels incomplete without the RAW mode. On the whole though, the Olympus SP-590UZ is a great do-it-all camera that’s easy to highly recommend.”
“Like most continuation models, there’s a lot that is, to put the matter bluntly, unremarkable about the 590. We haven’t even made it around to the camera’s electronic viewfinder and its 2.7 inch HyperCrystal II LCD, for instance, as neither is especially noteworthy or memorable.”

Press Release

London, 7 January 2009 – With a 26x optical zoom lens covering a remarkable 26-676mm* focal length range, 10fps sequential shooting, and a 12 Megapixel CCD, nothing can escape the scrutiny of the SP-590UZ. Photographers using the latest Olympus Ultra Zoom can further increase the power of its lens to 130x using the optional TCON-17N Teleconverter. Luckily, Dual Image Stabilisation is on hand to protect photos from blur caused by camera shake, and Shadow Adjustment Technology has been included to bring out details hidden in darker areas of the picture. So when photographers view their results on the camera’s 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal II LCD, they know that they’ll be picture perfect. The SP-590UZ will be in shops from March 2009.

Whether stalking wildlife on the moors, or photographing portraits on location, the last thing that a photographer needs is to be weighed down with heavy camera equipment. But with the Olympus SP-590UZ they have every focal length they need, built into one neat 26x optical zoom. That’s the freedom to choose from a 26mm* wide-angle lens, a 676mm* super telephoto, and everything between. And, should even this impressive range not be enough, the optional TCON-17N Teleconverter can be attached using the CLA-11 Adaptor Ring to give an unparalleled focal length equivalent to 1149mm*. Alternatively, the 5x digital zoom can be used to give a total magnification of 130x, that’s equivalent to 3380mm*!

For situations when working fast is a must, photographers can choose from 18 built-in shooting modes. And when more exposure control is required, full Manual, Aperture Priority, or Shutter Priority can be selected. So that photographers can be certain of the results they’ll get, Perfect Shot Preview allows the different effects of a particular setting, White Balance for example, to be compared next to each other on screen before the photo is taken.

Portrait photographers – and their models – will be delighted with the SP-590UZ. Advanced Face Detection Technology can identify up to 16 human subjects in a photo and expose and focus for them automatically. And even more remarkable, Beauty Mode will actually touch up the appearance of subjects as the photo is being taken, making their skin appear smoother, brighter and more youthful!

Creative photographers can focus as close as 1cm for dramatic natural history shots, control the optional Olympus FL-50R and FL-36R wireless flash units remotely for special lighting effects, and even superimpose one image on top of another using Multiple Exposure.

Image quality is paramount with the SP590UZ. Dual Image Stabilisation has been included to prevent blur caused by camera shake – very useful with such a powerful zoom – and Shadow Adjustment Technology brings out details that would otherwise be lost in shadows. And, of course, the camera’s 12 Megapixel picture resolution means that even giant display prints can be produced with ease.

The new Olympus SP-590UZ is compatibility with both xD-Picture Card and microSD Card*** and will go on sale from March 2009.

The Olympus SP-590UZ – main features:

- Most powerful optical performance in minimum size: 26x wide optical zoom (26-676mm*) – from extreme close-ups to the action as well as landscapes, 130x incl. digital zoom
- Avoids camera shake and blurry images thanks to Dual Image Stabilisation (combines mechanical and digital image stabilisation)
- Don’t miss the moment with high-speed 10fps sequence shooting**
- P/A/S/M exposure modes for creative freedom
- High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI™) technology incorporated for viewing images in high definition on HDMI TVs
- 12 Megapixels to make prints up to poster-size
- Advanced Face Detection of up to 16 persons for perfectly focused and exposed faces. In combination with Shadow Adjustment Technology other main parts of the picture are also correctly exposed.
- 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal II LCD with a bright display even in brilliant sunlight and at extreme angles (230,000 dots)
- Built-in flash and wireless flash control directly from the camera body
- Liven up your memories with movie recording with sound (up to VGA resolution at 30fps)
- xD-Picture Card and microSD Card*** compatible

“Picture quality is good. The screen is fantastic in bright sunlight. And the waterproof and shockproof qualities live up to their hype. The tap function works quite well making the camera good for cold weather or underwater photography. The camera is good-looking and easily pocketable.”
“Our big complaint with it, though, was its sluggish performance. Shutter lag and shot to shot times were very slow, making it poorly suited for any kind of action shooting. Given that a camera as rugged as the Olympus 6000 invites use in all sorts of active settings, we find it hard to recommend for the active life it seems designed for. If you can afford the roughly $80-90 difference in street price, the Olympus 8000 offers higher resolution, better shutter response and cycle time, and is even tougher and more waterproof than the Stylus Tough 6000; a better camera all around.”
“At the end of the day, the Tough-6000 – which impressed us so much early on – left us feeling just a little disappointment after a month of testing. Maybe our expectations were too high. Regardless, it’s a stylish, impressively solid little camera that handles itself well in the great outdoors. But for all of its adventure-photo advantages, the Tough-6000 is just a little too rough – or perhaps a little too tough – around the edges to be the all-in-one, general use answer we were hoping for.”
“There are very few cameras like this but if you do not consider all these characteristics to be important, it is fairly easy to find a better ultra-compact. If you do give importance to these, then the Tough 6000 holds its own quite well.”
“With a price to match your average 10-megapixel compact camera, the Olympus Mju Tough-6000 offers a good rugged approach without trying to sting you for it. That rugged approach lives up to its name, giving you a camera that you can happily give to the kids or take to the beach without the fear of breaking it.”
“There’s not much that we don’t like about the Tough 6000. In fact, we think it’s a lovely ruggedised camera for anyone with an adventurous bone in their body. Its picture quality is as good as the 12-megapixel Tough 8000, if not a little better. It’s also $100 cheaper than the Tough 8000, but it can’t go as deep or withstand as much force.
“With many handy features and scene modes, the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 aka Mju Tough 6000 is a decent point-and-shoot, rugged camera that I can recommend, with reservations. Why? The Stylus Tough 6000 isn’t the best camera in town – there are other rugged cameras with HD movie modes, better battery life, faster performance and better image quality.”
“I like this camera. Obviously its main attraction is the fact it is waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof, but it also takes a decent snapshot and is easy to use. If you are looking for a family camera knowing it might get the odd knock then this is well worth a look.”
“The Olympus mju Tough-6000 isn’t some testosterone-pumped freak of a camera. It’s a perfectly normal-looking, though stylish, pocket-sized compact that just happens to be able to survive extraordinary amounts of abuse. The picture quality is good rather than great, but, apart from that, it’s a tempting buy for outdoor types.”
“With the durability of the camera, there are no worries of children handling it. Performance and quality are ok, but the camera makes up for these with its unmatched versatility. With a MSRP of US$299, this is a great choice for people that want to document their adventures without the risk of breaking the camera from small bumps and accidents.”
“If we were in the market for an indestructible compact camera we would wait to see what Canon and Panasonic have to offer. We have tried a pre-production Panasonic unit and were satisfied with the results. As for the Beauty setting on the Olympus – we tried it on a plain person and it didn’t help. It simply blurs skin detail while keeping eyes and hair reasonably sharp. File under G for Gimmick along with Smile Detection.”

Press Excerpt

London, 7 January 2009 – Olympus’ unique range of waterproof, shockproof and freeze proof TOUGH cameras has grown with the addition of the 12 Megapixel µ TOUGH-8000 and the 10 Megapixel µ TOUGH-6000. Both models feature 3.6x wide zoom lenses, great for taking awesome wide-angle photos of rugged terrain and for zooming in on the distant bits that you can’t get to! Blur caused by camera shake is virtually eradicated on the two new TOUGHS, thanks to Dual Image Stabilisation and, as both cameras feature TAP Control, they can be operated by simply tapping on their casings – very handy if you’re wearing ski gloves. The µ TOUGH-8000 and µ TOUGH-6000 let you take extremely good photos in extreme conditions, and enjoy the experience.

The new top-of-the-range µ TOUGH-8000, is hard as nails and perfect for those who want to push things to their limits. It’s waterproof to 10m***, shockproof to falls from up to 2m**, freezeproof down to temperatures as low as -10°C and crushproof to weights of up to 100kg****. Fellow newcomer, the µ TOUGH-6000 is no wimp either. As well as being freezeproof, this model is waterproof to 3m*** and impervious to drops from up to 1.5m**.

Both models inherit the versatile 3.6x wide optical zoom first seen on the EISA Award winning Olympus µ 1030 SW. Starting at 28mm* wide-angle, fantastic for landscapes and architectural photos, this lens zooms up to a useful 102mm*, which is ideal for concentrating on more distant subjects. And Dual Image Stabilisation significantly reduces image blur caused by camera shake, even when the µ TOUGH-8000 and µ TOUGH-6000 are being used in challenging situations, such as being buffeted by the waves.

Being tough doesn’t mean that the new models aren’t sensitive. The µ TOUGH-8000 and µ TOUGH-6000 are packed with features that make beautiful photos a cert. And, with 12 and 10 Megapixels resolution respectively, results can be enlarged as big as you wish. Capable of recognising up to 3 faces, the µ TOUGH-8000’s Face Detection Technology guarantees that human subjects are always perfectly focused and exposed. The µ TOUGH-6000, which boasts Advanced Face Detection Technology, goes one better and can detect up to 16 faces. It also has a handy Smile Shot feature which automatically takes the picture as soon as the subject smiles and, for even happier results, Beauty Mode can retouch their skin as the shot is being taken, removing lines and wrinkles for a smooth glowing complexion.

To further improve picture quality Shadow Adjustment Technology has been included to boost shadow detail that would otherwise be lost. And for the ultimate in photography convenience, Intelligent Auto Mode analyses the image being photographed and matches it to one of five commonly-used scene modes, automatically selecting the best choice.

As an alternative to the intuitive on-screen menus displayed on their 6.9cm/2.7” HyperCrystal III LCD screens, the µ TOUGH-8000 and µ TOUGH-6000 also feature Tap Control. This allows fast access to a range of settings simply by tapping the camera body – even when wearing gloves, such as when skiing.

The µ TOUGH-8000 and µ TOUGH-6000 are waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof, and available in a range of great colours – so picking the right one might prove tough too! Expect to see them in UK stores in mid-January and early February 2009 respectively.

“Relative to other test shots by other waterproof cameras, the photos were, well, middling and grainy. I don’t believe that picture quality is necessarily a main concern on waterproof cameras—water quality is a bigger determination here—but as an above water camera, there are better choices.”
“While the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 is tough, has handy tap controls, and is quite attractive for a ruggedized camera, it’s difficult to recommend an almost-$400 shooter with image quality results that are on a par with the Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph—a camera from 2004.”
“Leading the way in “go anywhere, do anything” line of digicams, the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 goes as deep and is as strong as any other camera on the market. A big plus is that the styling of the camera doesn’t make it stand out as an underwater only camera. Featuring a 12-Megapixel imaging sensor, 3.6x wide optical zoom lens and dual image stabilization, it has everything you would find on other digicams in its price range. Performance from this Olympus model is very good, but it does lack a little in image quality.”
“Photo quality is good, but could certainly be better. Image noise and detail degradation starts creeping in fairly early, about ISO 200, so try to keep the ISO set at 64 or 100, and make sure you have plenty of light. Colors are natural and pleasing, and at their best at these lower ISOs, too; shots were generally evenly exposed as well. At all of the ISO settings, however, photos from the Tough 8000 just aren’t sharp.”
“Its combination of “tough” features and ratings outranks anything else currently on the market, and it snaps photos with accurate color and better than average detail for its category. Drop it, crush it, freeze it, or dive with it to 33 feet, and it’ll keep on clicking: If “tough” is what you need, the Tough 8000 delivers it in spades.”
“The camera has a wide range of features that should suit every person, such as face detection focus, shadow adjustment, numerous scene modes, good video mode, excellent macro mode, a wide angle 3.6x optical zoom lens, etc. It’s also good to see Olympus are supporting MicroSD memory cards with the provided XD adapter. The only thing I’d say this camera was missing, is custom white balance.”
“The controls are too dainty for extreme conditions. The buttons would be hard to operate underwater or in a blizzard, and the menu system is hard to navigate. However, image quality is reasonable, with a decent amount of detail and pleasing colors.”
“This is a robust digital camera at home around water or on the ski slopes. It is also drop proof and crush proof. It takes a good picture and is worth a good look if you are after a digital camera anyone in the family can use.”
“Overall image quality is good as long as you don’t push the camera to produce big enlargements. Underwater scene modes produced average results in a swimming pool, which feels like a missed opportunity for a camera designed to tame the elements. “Overall image quality is fine as long as you don’t push the camera to produce beyond its design. I made 13″ x 19″ enlargements from the 12 megapixel files, and they were OK, but I saw corner softness on only average detail. But I liked the 5″ x 7″ and the 8.5″ x 11″ prints much better.”
“For an almost $400 camera, the image quality with the Stylus Tough-8000 is a mixed bag. In good lighting, you’ll find excellent images most of the time, with good color and sharpness. However, when the lighting is not as good, you’ll tend to find some stray noise in images.”
“If you are in the market for a waterproof digital camera, the Stylus Tough-8000 Digital Camera is one of the best ones on the market at the moment. It has everything the previous Olympus waterproof camera had and then some. If you do a lot of travel or serious outdoor activities, the Stylus Tough-8000 Digital Camera should be a no brainer.”
“It was a tight race, however. The Olympus Tough 8000 is definitely the best current Stylus of the lot. But when it came down to overall sharpness, detail and color, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 took the cake, with the Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP riding its coattails.”
“There isn’t much this Olympus unit isn’t able do for a camera in its price range and there certainly aren’t many places it can’t be taken. So for the oft travelling, adventure seeking, and those who would prefer to really use their camera to its fullest rather than keep it tucked away for special occasions, this unit is one to seriously consider.”
“The usual caveats apply of course. Like most digital compacts, the Olympus mju Tough 8000 likes good light and isn’t really well suited to low-light photography. In addition to that, its extreme pixel density pushes its folding optics to their limits and beyond, meaning you don’t get as much detail as you would expect based on its high pixel count.”
“Topside, the image quality is everything you would expect from a good point and shoot camera. The auto shoot mode on the camera does a great job adjusting the flash and exposure settings to get the best picture possible. We found ourselves in that “auto” mode ~95% of the time because the camera is undoubtedly better at judging the proper settings.”
“Performance-wise, the Stylus Tough 8000 is around average in terms of speed. There is nothing in particular that screams ‘blazing fast’, but things aren’t sluggish either, considering the 12 megapixel files the camera needs to process. Battery life of the Stylus Tough 8000 is around 10% above the group average.”
“You expect compromises in a specialized camera, but precious few have been made with the Olympus mju Tough-8000. The fine detail could be better but it’s not enough to worry about, and you’re not giving up on any of the things you can take for granted in a standard snapper.”
“While the Tough 8000 may be the most rugged camera on the market, it doesn’t mean it’s the best in terms of image quality. We were disappointed with the general lack of clarity that photos had, and the amount of noise and chromatic aberration present.”
“Another feature that I thought was quite nice was the “tap control” feature. I have used cameras underwater before and one of the main issues I had was trying to change settings whilst underwater with diving gloves on.”
“Although we certainly like the tough concept and the ability to kiss your worries goodbye if drop your camera, step on it by mistake or take it into the snow and water without a care in the world, a digicam still has to take good pictures. The Olympus Tough-8000 really doesn’t do that primary task well, sad to say, and it’s hard to recommend”
