Review Index – (updated 17 November’09)

PhotographyBay
These guys indicated that if you are looking for a simple but capable compact camera the S640 would probably fit the bill. While it may not stand out in the crowd it is a pretty decent point-and-shoot. One of their gripes was that it had a pretty slow start-up time. However, once it’s engine is fully powered it turns into a decent dependable camera.
“Bottom line – the S640 is an easy to operate compact camera that most users will really enjoy because it is fast and smart enough to deliver consistent sharp photos of both stationary and fast moving subjects – which is what everyone wants their camera to do.”

Press Release

Four advanced image stabilising features help ensure sharper results
Nikon’s optical lens shift VR image stabilisation compensates for the effects of camera shake. High ISO 6400 capability at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement as well as camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

High-quality 2.7-in. Clear Colour Display provides a wider, clearer view
The high-quality 2.7-in. Clear Colour Display for the COOLPIX S640 features an ultra wide-viewing angle, anti-reflection coating, antifouling and water repellent layer, and screen brightness boost function.?Automatic colour correction and contrast adjustment at playback optimise image quality to match the viewing conditions, while also maximising power savings. The monitor’s new structure greatly reduces reflection and improves visibility outdoors.

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System with Skin Softening
As part of Nikon’s Smart Portrait System, a series of advanced functions help produce consistently great portraits. The new Skin Softening function automatically detects and analyses your subject’s skin and then adjusts smoothness for enhanced results. Automatically detecting as many as 12 faces in the shot, Face-priority AF helps produce satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure. Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the priority subject smiles while the Blink Proof function automatically shoots two sequential frames and saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are wide open. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Subject Tracking with auto lock-on
Subject tracking with its new auto lock-on capability automatically detects a human face and then continues to track and focus on that subject. Particularly useful when capturing children as they move naturally, Subject Tracking even functions if the subject moves out of the frame and returns within three seconds.

Quick Retouch
Quick Retouch adds the right finishing touch to your photos by automatically creating a retouched copy with the best balance of contrast and saturation.
COOLPIX S570 FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS

Intelligent automation contributes to carefree shooting
Nikon’s Scene Auto Selector eliminates the need to manually select a scene mode to match the shot, making it faster and easier to capture the moment. The COOLPIX S570 uses this intelligent function to analyse the subject and surrounding setting and automatically selects the most appropriate of the following six scene modes to achieve optimal results — Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Close-up, or Backlight.

Four advanced image stabilising features help ensure sharper results
The projector looks to have the potential to be a party hit noted the reviewer or now tht the holiday season is upon us it would be a good way to show holiday photos. It adds to the price of the camera so in the end you need t decide if the increased cost is worth it to you. Photo quality is just middle of the road and ultimately all you have here is a standard point-and-shoot.
Ok so it seems there is a “buy cool new technology” tax associated with the S1000pj. Price is not the only thing that is draining, the batteries don’t last so long when you switch the projector on. and last but not least this camera is no the most slender on the market but if you know all the pluses and minuses this might be your camera.
“OK Nikon has a really neat idea here but they should have spent a little more time giving the camera aspect more power. More battery power and a brighter projector would make this camera a market leader and consumer favorite. Nikon deserves an aware for bringing such an innovative and cool product to the market.”
“This camera leads the current pack as far as technology primarily because of a built-in projector. while the projector may sound gimmicky, everyone we showed it to thought it was cool and useful. If only the camera would provide higher quality photos at higher ISOs, but you have to give credit to Nikon for bring such a great devise to a rather dull point-and-shoot market.”
“This is a unique camera, you will find all the stuff that you would expect in a compact camera and on top of that you get a mini projector for some photo projector fun. At first you’ll have fun with the projector but after awhile it’ll probably lose its newness appeal. This is really a niche camera – to justify the so so performance and slightly more expense price this is a camera you’ll really need to want.”
“Yes, this camera is a novelty in the a very positive way: it’s fresh, interesting and innovative and most people will be amazed at its ability to project photos onto walls but even more impressed that it is a great compact digital camera in all aspects. “
“This is sure an innovative product, but it just falls shy of the mark. They forgot to make it a camera first, light fall off and lack of manual controls and a better overall layout are not good. It may be the world’s first projector camera but it has limited application and that it will only show images will limit this from being a popular camera.”
“Apart from the projector, this cameras performance and features are about what you would find on a cameras at half the price. Unless you need the built-in projector, you might want to consider a camera with better performance and features, like a long optical zoom lens, a larger LCD, or HD-video capture.”
“As one would expect the built-in projector found on the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj works better, the darker it is. In my tests, it showed that it can be used in daylight but don’t expect great results. One cool thing though is that simple pictures of family and friends that would normally be delegated to living in a folder somewhere on a hard drive took on a whole new perspective. They actually looked interesting and nostalgic and I think it’s down to how the projector handles the light registered on the image.”
“It is expensive, but it’s also innovative. No other camera falls into that price point with that classification, most are a less. That said, I enjoyed using the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj and I think if you’re into sharing your images then this is the camera for you.”

Photoxels
“The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is an enjoyable camera to use. It’s compact enough to carry in a trousers pocket, so it is always available for a quick shot. The controls are very intuitive. The built-in projector makes this a distinctly unique camera.”
“So the camera delivers decent results and the projector works too. But the real question is what you are going to do with it. We guess that if you are interested in the camera you can already see the benefits of having projection in the same device.”
“The projector is a handy feature if you often like to show friends what you’ve shot. I wouldn’t use it to show off my portfolio, but I would use it at night to show a few people at once my baby pictures. It is a lot bigger than the built-in LCD for showing other people your work, but the colors and blacks aren’t there yet.”
“Well, it’s an okay camera with a unique feature that will either leave you chortling with delight or utterly unimpressed. It’s definitely something to try before you buy. Just remember that you can get the same basic picture quality and features for half the price, so you’re paying plenty for that dinky little projector.”
“There was no doubt that the S1000pj handled itself well for daytime shots. Image stabilization is given due attention, but all that changed when we moved indoors. Being a point-and-shoot camera, users of the S1000pj would be sticking with the Auto mode. By doing so, we’ve seen noise levels becoming undesirable and the image stabilizer having a hard time getting the sharpness and details back to normal.”

DPReview
“This camera does not set new standards like its predecessor did and unless you absolutely must have video there is clearly no reason for D300 owners to upgrade. Don’t get us wrong though, this is a magnificent piece of gear – with subtle amount of upgrades on a camera we all ready thought had set new standards when it was released. Canon’s EOS 7D may be a tasty alternative but if you don’t need the higher resolution the Nikon still shines a little brighter in competitive landscape.”
“Bottom Line: Pick one up, for those looking for a dependable DSLR at a good price. Do you find yourself constantly wishing for another card in the camera, here’s your solution. Don’t buy this camera if all you need is the movie feature. With that said if you already have a D300, get the D300S for that second body, otherwise, pass because you won’t be picking up much of boost in performance or feature.”

WDC
“It seems Nikon had a good thing going with the D300 and felt that because they had few new additions, like video, it was time to come out with a new camera. It is pretty evident the D300s is for people who shoot stills and video. Bottom line it’s enhancements are subtle upgrades to an already outstanding camera.”

PhotographyBay
“The Nikon D300s is a great camera overall. The D300s occupies the space of a prosumer DSLR very well. It matches up nearly perfect to its intended market. The D300s is not without its flaws though. A couple of downers, which may vary in gravity depending on your needs, are the lower frame rate with 14-bit RAW image capture and the elevated noise at higher ISOs.”

TrustedReviews
“While the second card slot and slightly improved performance are welcome upgrades to an already brilliant camera, the new video recording mode and live monitor view are a bit disappointing compared to other premium models. The D300s is still utterly superb and one of the best DSLRs on the market, but don’t trade in your D300 just yet.”

Neutralday
“From my point of view the D300s offered incredible performance. The AF system that I initially had told myself (as a Canon EOS 5D Mark II owner) was overkill is actually not so at all. It’s fast, very fast, at gaining focus, and while seemingly complex, it turns out to be quite easy to use. I kept trying to find faults with the AF, but this system really is the best I’ve used.”

Ken Rockwell
“The D300s adds the same crappy movie mode as the D90 but with a new stereo microphone input (the D300s has only a mono mic built-in), face detection on playback so you can zoom right in on faces, ADR bracketing, and a Live-View virtual horizon so you won’t have tilted horizons when shooting in dense fog.”

PhotoReview.au
“Buy this camera if: – You want a solidly-built DSLR camera with a weather-resistant body and a professional-standard controls and functions – You want a Live View system plus the ability to shoot HD video clips – and are prepared to accept the limitations in the Movie mode – You have a selection of DX-Nikkor lenses.”

CrunchGear
“Nikon used a faster processor in the D300s, and it shows. The autofocus (one of the things that didn’t work *quite* right on D300) is fast and intelligent, the picture controls are intuitive, and the end results are outstanding. Nikon’s inclusion of custom picture control settings makes it easy to get everything exactly how you want it, consistently.”

PhotographyBlog
“So what does the D300s bring to the table that wasn’t available in its predecessor? In our opinion, the most important improvement is the addition of a second memory card slot, which lets you instantly back up your images or helps organize them by allowing you to record NEFs on one card and JPEGs on the other. Another nice addition is the Virtual Horizon, which helps you keep the camera level.”
“The D300s may not be the revolutionary update that some photographers had hoped for but Nikon has done a good job of retaining the solid, high performance base of the D300 and enhancing its performance and feature-set. HD video no longer has the “Wow Factor” it used to but photographers who want the flexibility to shoot video will find the D300s even more appealing.”

DigitalCameraReview
“The D300S combines high-speed performance, exceptional image processing, rugged build quality, and great video capabilities in a very familiar package. Add to that Nikon’s extraordinary collection of lenses, and a huge variety of accessories and the Nikon D300S becomes the obvious centerpiece to a top-quality photographic kit.”

Camera Labs
“Indeed by recycling the still and video capabilities of the year-old D90, the D300s comes across as standing still in some important regards when its arch rival ploughs forward. To be fair, Nikon makes no attempt to hide the fact the D300s is simply an enhanced version of an earlier model and not an entirely new camera – it is after all called the D300s, not the D400. But the important point is it’s now up against a brand new rival at much the same price point.”
“It’s fast, reliable workhorse for the semi-professional or amateur photographer who’s not quite ready for the D700 or the D3/D3X. It feels great to use and makes picture taking a real pleasure. That said, if you don’t need the addition of HD video you might want to look at trying to pick up a D300 seeing as they are so similar.”
“The Nikon D300S is a great choice for professionals who’ve got numerous Nikkor DX lenses and don’t plan on going full-frame any time soon. It could even make a handy second camera for a full-frame system, thanks to its fast frame rate and 1.5x focal factor (it makes your telephotos go further). But it’s not cheap, and the DX format is hardly future-proof.”

CameraLabs (High ISO results as compared to the Canon EOS 50D)
“At 6400 ISO we’re at the upper-level of the D300s, and both cameras have taken a plunge in overall quality. Canon then goes on to bravely offer a 12,800 ISO option, but the results ain’t pretty.”
“If you don’t need or want video, slightly faster low-light AF, or a bump in continuous-shooting speed, current D300 owners needn’t get upgrade envy and new purchasers might want to consider the older model if they can find it at a significantly lower price–though that may be difficult.”
“The Nikon D300s updates the excellent D300 as Nikon’s flagship DX format DSLR. While superficially very similar to the D300, there are major additions “borrowed” from other models such as the virtual horizon system introduced on the D3 and HD movie capture from Nikon’s D90. Another stunning new Nikon DX format DSLR that combines the performance and handling panache of its predecessor with HD video and other neat toys that may just make it worth your reaching for your check book.”
“The bottom line is that we loved taking pictures with the D300S. Quite apart from image quality, it’s so quick to use and adjust that you’ll hardly ever miss a shot.
Outstanding!!!
Bought this camera recently to replace the many years, but still trusty Nikon D200. Took both of them on a road trip recently and was extremely please with the Nikon D300s. The auto focus was super fast and accurate.

A word of warning if you’re buying a D300S for its video capabilities
This is a tough review because this camera is so excellent as a still device and easily earns five stars. However, if you’re currently a D300 owner looking to upgrade for this camera’s new video capabilities you will be disappointed.

Press Release

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 30th July 2009 – Nikon announces the D300S, a camera to broaden the possibilities for today’s creative image makers.

The D300S brings HD movie capability, a faster frame advance rate of 7fps and dual CF and SD memory card slots to offer new opportunities to explore creative imaging. Built upon the widely acclaimed D300, the D300S incorporates the same DX-format 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, professional 51-point autofocus system and commended EXPEED image processing in a discrete compact body.

Robert Cristina, Manager, Professional Products for Nikon Europe, comments: “The D300S is designed for today’s generation of creative image makers who want to combine brilliant stills in photography with the creative potential of video capture. The DX format has the advantage of lens magnification, compact size and affordability making the D300S a really exciting package for anyone looking to take their photography to another level”.

Capture and Edit HD Movies in stereo
The D300S comprehensively extends DSLR HD movie capture by adding external stereo sound input, autofocus capability and premieres in-camera movie editing. External stereo microphone support adds more realistic sound to shooting movie clips, and a new dedicated LV button makes switching between stills and movies easier than ever. In-camera movie clips can be edited by simply selecting the start and stop points during playback. Also, the new Type C HDMI interface enables editing to be carried out on an HD display if desired.

Dual slot storage media
For the first time in this class, the D300S offers the choice of dual storage media standards; CF (Compact Flash™) and SD (Secure Digital™) with options to manage how the camera records data to them. For example, one can elect to store stills to one format and movie clips to another.

Faster shooting, outstanding quality.
The D300S captures images up to a blistering 7 frames per second without requiring any additional battery pack. The optional MB-D10 pack makes 8fps possible as well as improved vertical shooting ergonomics.

The camera inherits the groundbreaking imaging technologies from the D300 such as Scene Recognition System with 1005 pixel RGB colour metering, and class-leading autofocus performance from the 51-Point Multi-CAM3500 autofocus system, which together deliver accurate autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance control. The EXPEED image processing system delivers Nikon’s acclaimed image quality criteria of rich accurate colours, smooth skin gradations, exceptional detail with the minimum of noise, with all of the flexibility of Nikon’s exclusive Picture Control system to manage the ‘look and feel’ of your work.

Intuitive ergonomics
Significant improvements have been made to Nikon’s renowned ergonomics with the adoption of the same multi-selector to that used on the D3 series and D700 that features a centre button to trigger movie start and stop. The D300S also features a Quiet release mode for discrete photography by allowing the user to manage the mirror return manually. The dedicated Info button simplifies displays and short cuts to commonly used settings, and the built-in pop-up flash diffuser covers 16mm wide-angle field of view.

Practical performance
The 3 inch 920K dot high definition TFT monitor offers excellent image playback and movie composition support. One can also display the Virtual Horizon level during movie shooting if desired. A variety of in-camera processing tools now includes an image resize function to process RAW files to one of four pre-set dimensions to enable to do more in camera, and less on the PC.

More than just an ‘s’
The D300S comprehensive feature set is designed for anyone who is serious about the future of their photography. It proposes much more than the simple ‘s’ suffix might suggest to cement a unique position in Nikon’s comprehensive DSLR range with a practical blend of creative options, professional technologies, compact size and affordability.

The D300S will be available in two kit configurations: AFS DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-4.5 VR and the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II.

Features

High-speed performance
One major advancement of the D300S is its ability to shoot as fast as 7 frames per second,*1 with Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL3e, and up to 8 frames per second*2 when using the optional Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10 and Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL4a. It also offers a rapid startup time of approx. 130 milliseconds and an amazingly short shutter release time lag of only 49 milliseconds*1.
*1 Based on CIPA Guidelines.
*2 Based on CIPA Guidelines. Battery Chamber Cover BL-3 required for Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL4a.

Refined D-Movie
The D300S’s advanced D-Movie function benefits from a number of functional and technological advancements, including an external stereo microphone input enabling high-fidelity audio, plus in-camera movie editing. In Tripod mode, the D300S features contrast-detect AF.

Experimenting with Nikon’s selection of finest-quality NIKKOR interchangeable lenses — from ultra-wide-angle and fisheye to super-telephoto – will enhance the dramatic impact of HD video. What’s more, the camera’s versatile Picture Control adjustment options let you modify the tone and colour of HD video clips with remarkable ease.

AF system with high-density 51-point AF
The D300S’s Multi-CAM 3500DX AF sensor module provides an exceptionally wide area of AF coverage. With 51 AF points densely positioned across the frame, it’s designed to capture your subject accurately, even when its movement is unpredictable. Moreover, it utilises 15 powerful cross-type sensors in the centre of the frame to give you the ultimate in detection performance with any AF NIKKOR lens of f/5.6 or faster. You can also choose to shoot with 11 focus points.

The 51 AF points are employed in various focus area modes, according to subject conditions. Single-point AF mode allows you to choose a single AF point from among the 51, and in dynamic-area AF mode, you can select from 9, 21 or 51 AF points. The 51-point option offers 3D-tracking mode, which automatically shifts the focus point to match the subject’s movements. Auto-area AF mode specialises in focusing on people, automatically detecting and prioritising skin tones with all 51 points.

Large, bright viewfinder with approximately 100% frame coverage
The D300S’s viewfinder features an eye-level pentaprism with approx. 100% frame coverage and approx. 0.94x magnification. The large, bright viewfinder makes for easier, more accurate composition.

DX-format CMOS image sensor; 12.3 effective megapixels
The D300S employs Nikon’s renowned DX-format CMOS image sensor that provides 12.3 effective megapixels. It delivers extraordinary image quality throughout a wide ISO sensitivity range of ISO 200 to ISO 3200 with low noise. In addition, Lo 1 for ISO 100 equivalent and Hi 1 for ISO 6400 equivalent are also available. Initial image capture data can be quickly and accurately transferred using 14-bit integrated A/D conversion. All successive internal processing is then handled at a full 16 bits. The resulting output reveals breathtaking details and remarkably smooth tonal gradations.

EXPEED image processing
Nikon’s comprehensive EXPEED image processing utilises an accumulation of sophisticated Nikon technologies to ensure impeccable quality for both still images and movies, while also achieving high-speed processing and low power consumption. It also effectively reduces lateral chromatic aberration.

Scene Recognition System makes the most of the 1,005-pixel RGB sensor
Nikon’s intelligent and exclusive light metering sensor applications have been refined to deliver the Scene Recognition System, which uses precise colour and brightness information from the 1,005-pixel RGB sensor to push accuracy levels for autofocus, auto exposure, i-TTL flash control and auto white balance to an unprecedented level. And in playback mode, the added Face Detection System lets you instantly zoom in on a human face in the high-resolution, 920k-dot LCD monitor.

Dual card slots for CF/SD memory cards
New for the D300, the D300S provides dual card slots, enabling the simultaneous use of both CompactFlash*3 and SD memory cards and allows photographers to select the primary recording slot. The secondary slot can record in three methods : “Overflow” recording lets you use the memory capacity of the secondary card when the primary card is full, automatically; “Backup” recording stores the same images on both cards; and “RAW primary, JPEG secondary” recording lets you record RAW data and JPEG data separately to each card. You can also copy images between the two memory cards. And when shooting D-Movie clips, it allows you to select the slot containing the card with the most available capacity.
*3Type I compatible only.

Engineered durability
Tested on fully assembled cameras, the shutter mechanism assembly has been proven for 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The ruggedly constructed D300S employs a strong yet lightweight magnesium alloy for its exterior cover, chassis and mirror box, as well as for the cover of the optional Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10. The camera also offers comprehensive countermeasures at key points to combat invasive moisture and dust.

Easy-to-access Live View mode
Live View function, activated by pressing the dedicated Live View button, makes it easy to shoot while composing on the LCD monitor.

In Handheld mode, which allows you to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting, TTL phase-detection AF using 51 AF points is activated. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects. It allows contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a frame.

Quiet Shutter-release mode for non-intrusive shooting
By selecting “Q” on the release mode dial, photographers can opt to substantially reduce the sound of the camera’s mirror-down during shooting. This is particularly useful when shooting in restrictive conditions such as when photographing wildlife.

Active D-Lighting for smooth tone reproduction in high-contrast lighting
By localising tone control, Active D-Lighting accurately restores the details in shadows and highlighted areas which are often lost in high-contrast lighting situations. Simply choose the appropriate setting — auto, extra high, high, normal, low or off — prior to shooting. For further options that will help you achieve your desired tone, the D300S also allows you to bracket your pictures with varying strength levels, for up to five frames, perfect for difficult lighting situations or if you don’t have the time or experience to select just one Active D-Lighting setting.

Picture Control: Customise the visual style of your images
Nikon’s Picture Control enables you to create the pictures you envisage, quickly and easily, by making specific selections and adjustments to image sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation and hue. And with other Picture Control-compatible cameras, as long as the settings are the same, you’re able to obtain the same picture tone. The D300S offers four preset Picture Control options — Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome. You can also download two additional presets, Portrait and Landscape, from the Nikon website.

Built-in flash with 16mm lens coverage
With a guide number of approx. 17/56 (m/ft., ISO 200, 20°C/68°F) and 16mm lens coverage — wider than the 18mm of the D300 — the high-performance built-in flash supports Nikon’s original i-TTL flash control that evaluates flash exposure with greater precision for exceptional results. Compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, the built-in flash controls up to two groups of remote units as a master/commander in Advanced Wireless Lighting.

Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10 (optional)
The optional Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10 supports three types of batteries: R6/AA-size batteries, along with Nikon’s Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL3e and Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL4a. It combines added stability with extended shooting of up to approx. 2,950 shots*1 per charge and enables faster high-speed continuous shooting at up to 8 fps*2.
*1Based on CIPA Standards. When Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL3e is used for camera body, together with Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL4a and Battery Chamber Cover BL-3 for the Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10.
*2 Based on CIPA Guidelines. When Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL4a and Battery Chamber Cover BL-3 are used for the Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10, all of which are sold separately.

“This camera with its great touchscreen controls earned my full recommendation. It does a wonderful job in bright outdoor light and is stuffed with really neat features and on top of that takes great images. If you’re after a neat touch screen compact camera here it is however, if you’ll be shooting low light or fast moving subject you might be better off looking at another camera.”
“I hate to say it but this camera is a terrible performer and the resulting photos are bad too. It’s big and a slow poke. Canon Powershots are way better, which is why Canon sells more compact cameras than Nikon, by a lot. I crossed my fingers and hoped that once the photos got onto my computer that all complaining about it being slow and bulky would be made up for by great photo quality. Wishful thinking on my part. The pictures were terrible with fuzzy corners no matter what I set the camera at.”

Nikon’s electronic VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilisation compensates for the effects of camera shake. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement as well as camera shake. ISO 3200 capability at any image size up to its maximum of 4000 x 3000 pixels allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

Quick Retouch
Quick Retouch adds the right finishing touch to your photos by automatically creating a retouched copy with the best balance of contrast and saturation.

A full frame sensor combined with low megapixels and good algorithms to keep the noise down allows photographers to record images that simply are not possible with other cameras. One photographer remarked about the D3s, “I took better photos, and it wasn’t because I became a better photographer.””
“Dinner was served in a dimly-lit environment, presenting the ideal circumstances to try out the high ISO performance of the Nikon D3s. It’s a pity we cannot show you the images, since it is simply incredible what the improved sensor of the D3s is able to do. Both pictures and videos benefit from the large ISO range, enabling shooting in the most difficult circumstances. If you have the possibility to shoot using a Nikon D3s in the near future, you will soon be convinced.”

Press Release

October 14, 2009: Nikon today announces the introduction of the D3S, the camera that enables professionals to take control of the unpredictable and extends the possibilities for action photographers everywhere. Built upon the widely acclaimed Nikon D3, the D3S advances low light photography to another level and sets in motion new creative options for multi-media movie shooting.

Robert Cristina, Manager, Professional Products for Nikon Europe, comments: “The D3S rewrites the rules for extreme low light photography, enabling photographers to take control of ambient light. Professionals from all over the world have contributed to making the best even better.”

It’s what we need, now.
Francois Marit, Photo Technical Manager at global news provider, Agence France Presse, said: “Since we started using the Nikon D3, we have also been exploring movie capture to see exactly how it can help us. Now the D3S gives us exactly what we need, the ability to shoot pictures and movies with one piece of professional equipment. This enables us to transmit complete packages of still images and movie clips from the thousands of news and sports events we cover every week, and will really give us the edge in both online and print formats”

Bill Frakes, one of the first professional photographers to trial the D3S, said: “I make career decisions in milliseconds and I want the best possible image quality every time I push the button. I need a camera that responds precisely, quickly and consistently. The D3S does that and more and this gives me enormous freedom.”

When flash is not an option
The D3S features a completely re-designed 12.1 effective megapixel image sensor. The large pixel pitch, with a completely modified inner structure, means that the D3S can capture images under light conditions which were previously believed to be impossible. The seven stop ISO range of 200 – 12,800 enables image and movie capture in extremely low ambient light conditions which is essential for today’s news and sports photographers.

Further proof of the D3S’s incredible capacity for low light photography is the fact that it is the first camera to offer no less than three additional ISO boost levels, up to Hi-3, (ISO equivalent of an astounding 102,400).

FX format HD movies
The D3S delivers a new look and feel to the emerging trend of DSLR movie capture and exploits the creative depth-of-field effects offered by the large FX-format sensor and the benefits of wide aperture NIKKOR lenses, the lens of choice for the world’s leading photographers. Instant and intuitive in use, the D3S’s D-movie function is prioritised for high productivity.

Movies are captured at 720p/ 24fps in motion JPEG with stereo sound using the input jack. The file format enables a unique ‘Save Selected’ frame option that enables the user to shoot video freely, secure in the knowledge that a still image of a key moment can be transmitted as well.

Acclaimed autofocus tuned for movie capture.
Completely configurable to set up, but extremely simple to use, Nikon’s acclaimed high-density 51-point Multi-CAM3500 AF system, with 15- highly sensitive cross points, provides users with an industry leading system for tracking fast moving subjects. The D3S contrast detection AF system has also been tuned to provide autofocus support during movie capture and Live View.

Image sensor cleaning
Following extensive feedback from professional photographers, the D3S implements a new image sensor cleaning function that generates vibrations at four different frequencies to reduce the impact of static dust collection on the optical low pass filter of the image sensor. This has been implemented without impacting on the 100% viewfinder coverage expected from a flagship, professional D series camera.

Total flexibility
The D3S now offers no less than three alternative crop modes, all masked automatically in the viewfinder. The photographer can now choose from 5:4 (30×24); 1.2x (30×20); and DX (24×16). The new crop mode is designed to offer a practical combination of lens magnification and slightly reduced file size.

When discretion is required
The D3S features a new Quiet shutter release mode that enables the photographer to mitigate the sound caused by the mirror return. Suitable for wildlife photography and other situations where shutter noise might distract the subject, this innovation again reflects and responds to practical feedback from photographers using Nikon’s D3 series cameras.

Improved Active D-Lighting options
The D3S now offers no fewer than five options for Active D-Lighting when shooting high contrast or high key subject matter. Alongside a new Auto setting, users now have four manual control levels; Extra High ; High, Normal and Low.

In camera post processing
Another aid for increasing productivity in the D3S is the new RAW processing options in the Retouch menu. The following image settings can be applied to RAW (NEF) files in the camera on-the-fly: JPEG compression, Size, White Balance, Exposure Compensation, Picture Control, Noise Reduction, Colour space and Vignette Control settings. These options accelerate post production worklflow for the busy photographer on the road, by reducing the need to use a PC and Capture NX2 software.

Ready for anything
The D3S redraws the boundaries for photographers allowing them even more control over unpredictable subjects in testing lighting conditions. The camera sensor is so sensitive that it can capture subjects that are practically invisible to the naked eye and render results that are remarkably clear of noise and ready for print. The weather-sealed durable magnesium construction is built to withstand extreme temperatures and humidity to enable users to complete assignments faster and more efficiently.
Feature Highlights

ISO performance: ISO 12800 as standard, expandable to ISO equivalent of 102400 (Hi 3)
Professional photographers can now rely on ISO 200 to ISO 12800 as the professional standard of image quality for their assignments — an incredible advantage when shooting indoor sports, stadium events at night or any other shooting situations where light is limited and Speedlights are not practical. Shooting at ISOs as high as 12,800, the D3S can take commercial-quality, pin-sharp images in low light at action-freezing shutter speeds — a capability that will open a new world of photographic opportunities. When needed, the D3S expands to the amazing ISO equivalent of 102,400, still revealing colours and details even in extremely low-lit places where human eyes may find it difficult to discern objects. This exceptional low-noiseperformance also applies to D-Movie capture, which creates new potential for multimedia projects and assignments.
Large pixel pitch: the 12.1-megapixel FX-format advantage
The D3S’s image sensor has been completely redesigned from the D3; the inner structure has been further optimised, with the pixel count and large pixel pitch maintained for even greater latitude in high ISO performance. As a result, the D3S captures and renders light in ways that no other ordinary digital SLR cameras has yet achieved, with a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio and a wide dynamic range for unmatched image quality for both still images and movies throughout the broadened ISO sensitivity capabilities.

New and improved D-Movie function
From well-lit scenes to extremely low-lit situations, the D3S’s D-Movie mode delivers unique versatility. The newly refined D-Movie offers HD quality (1,280 x 720 pixels) Motion-JPEG movies at 24 fps. By controlling the aperture from the widest f-stop to the smallest, the large FX-format sensor renders low-noise images with beautiful bokeh effects from a large selection of NIKKOR lenses. High-Sensitivity Movie mode allows users to shoot at up to ISO equivalent of 102,400in places too dark to see clearly with their own eyes. D-Movie footage is easy to trim in-camera by simply selecting the starting and ending point. An extra bonus for sports and news photographers is the ability to save selected movie frames as JPEGs for immediate printand web publishing needs. The D3S has both an internal mono-aural microphone and an external stereo microphone input, enabling higher fidelity audio recording.

Image sensor cleaning: assured protection
Another significant improvement from the D3 is the employment of the Image Sensor Cleaning function, which generates vibrations at four specific frequencies to optimise dust removal. This function can be set to operate automatically when the camera is turned on and off, or manually.

EXPEED: Nikon’s comprehensive approach to quality digital images
Nikon’s fast, comprehensive, and energy-efficient approach to in-camera image processing maintains the rich initial data’s integrity through 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit image-processing, which demonstrates the enormous creative potential of NEF (Nikon Electronic Image Format). Combined with Nikon’s FX-format sensor, the D3S produces an exceptional tonal range and minimized tone jumps. Users can expect more accuracy with difficult colour combinations such as skin tones and strong reds in the same frame without over-saturation and finer tonal gradation in highlights, even with extremely bright subject matter.
Lateral chromatic aberration reduction: edge-to-edge sharpness
The D3S corrects colour fringes caused by chromatic aberrations that, in some instances, can appear at the edges of differing subject elements. Lateral chromatic aberrations are corrected regardless of lens type — whether telephoto, wide-angle, non-CPU and other types of NIKKOR lenses.

Active D-Lighting: rescuing tone in highlights and shadows
Nikon’s Active D-Lighting automatically regulates the dynamic range of high-contrast scenes, pulling out shadow details and preserving highlights while maintaining proper contrast. The D3S allows photographers to choose from six Active D-Lighting settings, including the newly added Auto and Extra High, as well as High, Normal, Low and Off. You can also bracket Active D-Lighting strength levels up to five frames and select the best rendition afterwards.

Picture Control: custom-tailored tone and color
Picture Control helps you define the look and feel of your images by custom-tailoring sharpness, saturation and other parameters to match your creative intentions. The D3S comes with four pre-installed Picture Control profiles, which can be fine-tuned and saved as new custom Picture Control profiles that match your personal shooting style or particular shooting conditions. These profiles can easily be copied to additional cameras.
Speed and readiness throughout the workflow
The D3S optimises workflow speed and fluidity throughout the entire shooting process. Start-up time is approx. 0.12 seconds* and release time lag is minimised to approx. 0.04 seconds*, exactly as fast as the D3, but the D3S’s increased buffer memory is twice as large as that of the D3’s. In addition, the D3S’s autofocusing, image processing, memory card access and recording, USB interface and optional wireless transmitter all work together to keep professional photographers focused. And for sport and news photographers, many of the D3S’s JPEG files are print-readywith little or no post-production: an extra edge when time is short.

9-frames-per-second* shooting rate in FX-format, 11 fps* in DX crop
The D3S’s continuous shooting rates are impressive, and the D3S’s powerful stepping motor allows for a more steady delivery of fast continuous shooting speeds at a wider range of aperture settings than lesser cameras can claim. Professionals will now have greater control and fewer limitations when making the images they desire. With the DX crop, photographers can also add a 1.5x picture angle and a faster frame rate to their arsenal. Furthermore, the factory-installed buffer memory is twice the capacity of the D3, dramatically increasing the power of continuous shooting.

Scene Recognition System: enlightened accuracy and intelligence
Nikon’s exclusive 1,005-pixel RGB sensor precisely reads brightness and colour information to raise the overall accuracy of AF, AE, i-TTL flash control and auto white balance to new heights, thanks to the Scene Recognition System. The D3S’s AF delivers superb subject tracking and subject identification performance. Highlight analysis used for AE reproduces brightness faithful to the eye, and light source identification makes auto white balance uniquely precise and reliable.

51-point AF: fast and accurate subject acquisition
The D3S’s strategically positioned 51 AF points deliver faster focus, even with quick and/or erratic subject movement. The 15 cross-type sensors in the centre of the frame maintain the same outstanding performance with any AF NIKKOR lens f/5.6 or faster. There are four Dynamic-area AF options, including 51 points (3D-tracking), which accurately follows your subject by shifting focus points using colour and brightness information from the Scene Recognition System. This gives users an extra advantage when composition is important but your subject’s movement is extremely erratic. Single-point and Auto-area AF modes are also available.
Sophisticated AE with highlight analysis
Nikon’s exclusive 3D colour matrix metering II is highly praised for its outstanding performance and faithful exposure results — even in complex, unforgiving lighting conditions. The D3S takes accurate exposure further, using highlight analysis from the Scene Recognition System and then carefully selecting from a database containing information from over 30,000 actual shooting situations.

Informed auto white balance
Leading professionals often note that Nikon’s auto white balance exhibits remarkable results, even in challenging conditions with mixed light sources. With the D3S, auto white balance makes even further progress. Professionals can expect white as truly white in a wider variety of settings.

Approx. 100% frame coverage
The D3S’s large prism gives you the FX-format visual advantage when you shoot. The viewfinder image is not only larger and brighter, but the focusing screen is also carefully designed to help you to more intuitively sense sharp focus, be it manual or autofocus.

Superior durability
For the reliability professionals demand, the shutter of the D3S has been tested for up to 300,000 cycles in fully assembled cameras under rigorous conditions. The ruggedly constructed D3S employs a strong yet lightweight magnesium alloy for its body, exterior cover, chassis and mirror box. Furthermore, a comprehensive series of O-rings and other specialised seals, combined with additional Nikon engineering, protect the D3S against invasive moisture, dust and even electromagnetic interference.

Twin CF card slots
The D3S lets you designate each card slot for certain tasks: record two full CF cards of data sequentially for a large amount of storage, record the same data onto two cards (backup), record RAW and JPEG simultaneously onto separate cards, and transfer data from one card to another. You can also designate the slot for data-heavy D-Movie recording.

Long-life battery
The D3S uses the EN-EL4a rechargeable batteries. Power consumption and power management systems have been engineered for greater operating efficiency, so you can expect long battery life, shooting up to 4,200 images* per charge.

Easy-to-access Live View mode
The dedicated Live View button gives you instant access to two Live View modes: Tripod mode for accurate AF operation and Hand-held mode for more versatile shooting angles. The speed for Contrast-detect AF in Tripod mode has also been improved for enhanced practicality.
Quiet Shutter-release mode for non-intrusive shooting
Photographers can select “Q” on the release mode dial to substantially reduce the sound of the camera’s mirror-down during shooting. This is particularly useful when shooting in restrictive conditions such as when photographing theatrical performances or wildlife.

3-in., approx. 921k-dot color, 170º viewing angle LCD monitor
The D3S’s large, high-resolution LCD monitor delivers bright, crisp image playback with up to 27x enlargement for immediate and precise image confirmation. Each LCD is covered with scratch resistant tempered glass and individuallycalibrated and fine-tuned at the factory to deliver consistent performance.

“This camera definitely has eye appeal and comes packed with a lot of new technologies from Nikon. On the down side the lens does have a bit blurring, unimpressive color reproduction, not quite accurate white balance, and a little slow in between shots. Higher ISO’s do present some noise but we applaud Nikon for some unique qualities and really nice photos when printed. Add it all up and the S630 earns our recommended designation.”
“The Coolpix S630 is on the slow side if you want to fire off more than one photo. It does a decent job without being anything to get too excited about. For me the most impressive feature was the brightness and co lours of my outdoor shots.”
“While not heavy on controls, its still image quality was excellent, with low noise, above average color accuracy, and minimal lens distortion. Where the camera faltered was its image stabilization system, a slow continuous burst mode, and standard definition video with very little control.”
“There’s not a lot that makes the Coolpix S630 stand out from the crowd. There’s no HD movie recording, limited manual control and there are a number of handling issues. You’ll get decent images in most cases, but little improvement over a camera offering 10Mp performance. This isn’t a bad camera, it’s just we expected rather a lot more from brand like Nikon.”
“We had trouble at night, particularly in certain types of dim lighting. Steadying the Nikon Coolpix S630 for a one-second shutter speed was a challenge, so we had to resort to the flash in certain situations. Colors are decent, but noise is heightened and the image looks fake.”

DCRP
“Photo quality is undoubtedly the Coolpix S630’s weak spot. Exposure is generally spot-on, though like most compact cameras, the S630 likes to clip highlights. I have no complaints about color: the camera handled everyday shooting and my studio lamps without an issue. The big problem is detail, or rather a lack of detail. Images are soft, overprocessed, and fuzzy — even at IS0 64. The reason for this is that Nikon is applying a ton of noise reduction to photos. So, instead of seeing grainy photos as the ISO increases, you just lose detail.”
“For a little compact I don’t think it’s too bad. I think if you had this as something to stick in your pocket on those family days when the bag you’re carrying will have sandwiches in, then it’ll do the job nicely. It seems to prefer sunny days, but then don’t we all?”
“Overall outdoor image quality is good. The exposures are very accurate based on the cameras focus point, however, it left the overcast skies slightly overexposed. The color in the images looks very natural, giving authentic representations of what the photographer is viewing. With the included Nikkor 7x (37-260mm, 35mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, shooting landscape, group portraits and getting extremely close to distant objects it simple.”
“The Nikon Coolpix S630’s downfall is pretty anti-climatic, just about everything was smooth sailing (except battery life and movie mode) until we reached image quality. What’s the use of having good ergonomics and a decent set of point-and-shoot features when a camera can’t take good quality photos? If you actually do buy the Coolpix S630, remember to get an extra battery and be prepared to do cleaning up of images on your computer.”
“Being a point-and-shoot camera, manual features are kept to a bare minimum. Along with the now-obligatory face detection and 16 scene modes, the highlight is probably the continuous shooting mode, which offers an impressive 11 frames per second burst rate (up to 20 frames can be taken with each shutter-release). If you’re a sporting fanatic keen to study the minutia of your technique, this function is bound to come in handy.”
“If you were considering an average compact point-and-shoot with a more typical 3x zoom, the Nikon Coolpix S630 is a nice (there’s that word again) step up. “Although it’s a bit expensive for a point-and-shoot automatic, the Nikon CoolPix S630 does offer excellent handling, Nikon’s impeccable build quality, a big 7x zoom and very good picture quality. It copes well with most lighting conditions, and is ideal for holiday snaps and social situations. Performance is a bit slow, and it lacks some of the latest features, but it’s a nice camera to use and takes good pictures. “
“The S630 is a decent compact camera if you need speedy burst shooting in a small body with 7x optical zoom. Apart from that, there’s little else to recommend this camera on considering the disappointing image quality and expensive asking price.”
“By the time you’ve worked out everything the Nikon Coolpix S630 does and how to use it, it’ll be time to get a new camera. The S630 does everything it sets out to, but not especially well and often with restrictions you may not have anticipated.”

The S630 – fit for anyone

With a Sure Grip that comfortably fits your hand, taking pictures with the S630 simply feels right. Its performance is right on the mark too. With 12 million effective megapixels, image-sensor shift VR (Vibration Reduction) and a superb 7x optical zoom NIKKOR lens, the quality of the images it produces will enhance any occasion. It boasts cutting edge features such as the all-new Blink Proof feature, which combines Smile mode and Blink Warning. This function detects a face and automatically takes two sequential shots when the subject smiles, then saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are open. Add Scene Auto mode, which automatically adjusts the settings to suit the scene, a Sports Continuous Mode with up to 10 fps and a Quick Retouch function, and this is clearly a camera to be reckoned with. It is available in Black or Ruby Red.

“For day-to-day outdoor photos the camera did ok with no big flaws. color balance is accurate, photo detail is pretty good, and contrast level is also good. Chromatic aberration in the image corners is detectable but not at a level that wrecks the photos.”
“The Nikon Coolpix S220 is what it is: an inexpensive, lightweight, ultracompact camera that takes pictures. Those pictures might not always look too great–especially viewed at full size–but it really comes down to what you’re after? If it’s capturing the moment to post online for sharing with friends and family and you’re sick of using your phone to do it and want more control over the end results, the S220 is an option.”
“The Nikon CoolPix S220 is just a slight upgrade over the S210 that came out last year. They have added a couple new features, including a 10-Megapixel imaging sensor and some shooting modes that make the camera even easier to use. However, the image quality and performance really hold this ultra-compact model back.”
“While some lens, LCD, and image quality is sacrificed in the Coolpix S220 for its affordable price tag and ultra compact body, overall this unit undoubtedly offers a lot of style and portability for a very little asking price. One certainly worth considering if looking to purchase a stylish but positively simple compact camera within this price range.”
“This is one of the cheaper pocket sized cameras from a known brand. It takes a decent snapshot, without really hitting the highest quality levels. It is one of the smallest digital cameras and it is extremely lightweight too.”
“The Nikon CoolPix S225 a very pretty little camera. It is well made, sensibly designed and performs reasonably well. It is lacking in interesting features, but it is very easy to use. It has excellent high-ISO noise control, but unfortunately it is badly let down by inferior lens quality and restricted dynamic range.”
“The Nikon CoolPix S220 wasn’t brilliant when it came to our speed tests. Although start-up took less than a second, you’ll have to wait a further 3 seconds before your first shot. This is pretty lethargic by modern camera standards and may lead to the occasional lost opportunity (an intoxicated chum teetering and then falling into a pool, say).”
“The battery life is better than the S230 sibling as you’d expect, giving you a cited 160 shots from a full charge, which we found to be around the right marker – it should give you enough to get through a typical wedding, for example. It can leave you wanting more on the imaging front, but for those looking for an easy to use snapper, which is light and compact, then the S220 does come at an appealing price.”

Nikon UK is introducing an upgraded S-Series line-up that includes the S630, S620, S230 and S220. All four models have been designed with one thing in mind: to offer users ultimate style, speed and simplicity in a compact camera body.

The S630 is compact, and stylishly designed with a special Sure grip for a comfortable finger-fit. The S620 has the best ISO standard of any compact camera in its class. The S230 is both stylish and easy to use thanks to its advanced touch-screen system, while the S220 looks elegant, but easy to use. All 4 models are available in colours that fit any taste or personality, and all feature Nikon’s EXPEED image-processing concept.

Mark Pekelharing, Product Manager Consumer Products at Nikon Europe B.V: “We are very proud of our colourful new S-Series line-up and believe we have a camera to suit anyone’s taste. The cameras are a joy to use. They look good, feel good and produce stunning pictures.”

S230/S220 – sensible style and powerful simplicity
Slim, compact and stylish, this duo is perhaps the most elegant of the new S-Series. The S230 features a combination of an advanced 3.0 inch touch-screen with basic buttons, so taking photographs is great fun and very easy. It also incorporates an array of advanced functions such as the new Blink Proof, Quick Retouch, Scene Auto Selector and Scene Mode. Blink Proof ensures you won’t take pictures of anyone with their eyes closed. Quick Retouch allows you to retouch images after they’ve been taken using advanced technologies from Nikon’s award winning D-SLRs. Seventeen scene modes in the S230 and sixteen in the S220 allow you to choose the perfect camera settings for almost any shooting situation. In addition to 10 effective megapixels and a NIKKOR 3x zoom lens, these models offer Electronic Vibration Reduction, a high sensitivity range up to ISO 2000 and Motion Detection to make picture-taking easy in any situation. At just 18mm, the S220 is thin and lightweight (approx. 100 g) and has a 2.5-inch LCD monitor for reviewing your pictures. Both cameras have stylish metallic bodies that will fit any small bag and come in a range of fashionable colours varying from Soft Silver, Warm Silver, Aqua Green, Gloss Red, Night Blue, Cobalt Blue, Magenta and Purple to Black.

“At the end of the day, the Nikon D3000 did a nice enough job that it would satisfy anyone who limits their print size to 8 x 10, because of the cameras really saturated color and occasional higher noise levels at higher ISOs. Keep an eye on the focus, and make sure you don’t move the AF point accidentally, it’s easy to do. It’s a good camera, don’t get me wrong, but it just does not rise to the level where we can give it our full endorsement.”
“We had more fun testing this camera than we expected. It’s loaded with features entry level shooters will appreciate, yet with enough horse power to feel and act like a pro camera. It’s light and compact with straight forward handling and a quality build. Too bad Nikon did not to add movie capture or Live View mode. Bottom line, this Nikons most beginner DSLR so far, thanks to its spot on performance, brilliant new features, it qualifies as one of the best deals out there.”
“This camera is an ideal choice for DSLR beginners or first-time owners who do not need Live View. The Guide mode and help system have no competition for friendliness and ease of use, while under the hood the powerful metering and AF systems make sure the user has a high success rate.”
“In our opinion the Nikon D3000 is just about the perfect entry-level DSLR. It offers excellent build quality, super easy handling, outstanding performance and good image quality, while leaving out non-useful gimmicks like video and live view. The Guide mode will help newcomers discover the basics of SLR photography, while a good range of manual options, as well as the excellent metering and AF systems, will provide plenty of scope for more experienced users.”
“In terms of settings, the Nikon D3000 provides plenty of application possibilities for the amateur or novice photographer. If you have outgrown your compact camera and just want more image quality, and really want to delve into your creativity, the Nikon D3000 will be a great camera for you!”

Photocrati
“The D3000 deserves to be even more popular because of its greater speed, more effective autofocus system and the extra features mentioned earlier. Unless you definitely want live view, movie mode and the extras available with the more expensive D5000, this smaller/lighter camera would be an ideal choice.”

DigitalCameraInfo
“In two of our key performance tests, resolution and color accuracy, the D3000 was unimpressive. Resolution was marginally better than the disappointing NIkon D5000, but nowhere near as good as the Pentax K2000, an equally inexpensive camera. As for color accuracy, the D3000 trailed all of our comparison cameras.”

Ken Rockwell
“The Nikon D3000 is inferior both in operational speed and ease of use, as well as inferior in technical image quality. Specifically, the D3000 is about one stop noisier at any given ISO than the D40; the D3000 is as noisy at ISO 800 as the D40 is at ISO 1,600. While the D40 looks great at ISO 1,600, the D3000 is too grainy at ISO 1,600 for normal use. You have to keep the D3000 at ISO 800 or below for the best results.”
“If you’re looking for a dSLR that piles on the features for a pittance, the D3000 probably isn’t it. But if you want to make the step up from a point-and-shoot, the Nikon D3000 provides the right combination of newbie-friendly operation coupled with the performance and image quality that made you want to upgrade in the first place.”
“Given its attractive price and newbie-friendly features, the Nikon D3000 isn’t a bad choice for a first-D-SLR purchase, since you also get solid low-ISO images and plenty of lens options in the bargain. But the $549.99 (with 18-55mm kit lens) Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 is also worth a look: It’s not only user-friendly, but offers better low-light performance, and an HDMI port—for $50 less.”
“I’m disappointed to see the lack of live view and video mode simply because these are features that the intended market are used to having on their cameras. Still, Nikon have shown some spirit as this will force newcomers into using a DSLR as it was originally intended.”
“If you want an affordable, simple DSLR as a step up from a point and shoot camera, then the Nikon D3000 deserves your consideration. Sure, you could step up to the D5000, which offers a couple more megapixels and can shoot 720p HD video; however, I suspect that few D5000 buyers will find satisfaction in the camera as a dual purpose machine. The megapixel disparity is inconsequential.”
“The Nikon D3000 is very middle-of-the-road, but its pictures are great, its technology is perfectly adequate and it’s as simple to use as Nikon says it is. Even the price is alright — it’s much more than you might have paid for a starter dSLR a couple of years ago, but rivals have gone up in price too.”
“In the end, the D3000 is great because it delivers what novice DSLR users expect from a DSLR: image quality and speed above all. A simple and durable body round off its place as an excellent choice among entry-level DSLR cameras.”
“Despite a few image quality issues. feature omissions, and bundle frustrations, the Nikon D3000 is a very nice entry-level digital SLR. For under $600 you get a compact and capable camera that’s remarkably easy to use, and when you’re ready for manual controls and nicer lenses, the D3000 will be waiting. The D3000 earns my recommendation, though be sure to use that comparison table at the top of the review to see if it’s worth spending a bit more for the D5000’s feature set.”
“The D3000 gives you a great camera body and a great lens with image stabilization along with many other features to help you along the way like exceptional light sensitivity and great image reproduction. Other benefits for the beginner include full automatic control for those uncomfortable with manual settings to help the transition into DSLR photography, a 10.2 megapixel image sensor, and the Nikon Guide Mode.”
“This is a great first SLR and a genuine pleasure to use. It’s fast and intelligent, with a good quality kit lens, and comes with all the advantages of Nikon’s optical heritage. The ISO performance is great for the money, and the clear LCD makes it easy to make adjustments as you go along.”
“The D3000 has no depth-of-field preview and no exposure bracketing, just manual plus/minus compensation. This covers a huge five stops range either way, and can be set in Guide mode on the rear screen without using the quick compensation button located behind the shutter release. It also lacks HDMI output even for stills (many competing models offer an HDMI socket now) and has no GPS interface – for these, the D5000 is needed.”
“Overall then, the Nikon D3000 is worthy of a coveted Photography Blog “Highly Recommended” award. A few more features next time though Nikon, and you might truly have something to shout about.”
“The Nikon D3000 also incorporates the same 11 point AF system with 3D Focus Tracking found in the Nikon D5000 and D90, while retaining many of the features and overall design that made the Nikon D40 and the current Nikon D60 so popular, including an easy to use menu system and comfortable buttons and controls.”
“The Nikon D3000 isn’t designed to ‘wow’ people, but instead to teach people. It’s a digital SLR camera with in-built guides that can help novices select the appropriate shooting mode and settings depending on the style of photo they want to take. It’s image quality is good overall, but it’s no match for a mid-range D-SLR.”
“In terms of light sensitivity, noise begins to intrude into shadow detail from ISO 400, but up to and including ISO 800 it’s kept sufficiently at bay to avoid overall softening and loss of detail. Stray above this however and you risk an image looking more painterly rather than photographic.”
“As long as you don’t expect too many fancy bells and whistles, you won’t be disappointed with the quality and performance of the D3000. “Despite the D3000 being an entry-level digital SLR, its performance is still quite good. It will shoot at just over two frames per second in continuous mode (and slightly faster for the first 10 or so shots it takes), and its focusing engine is swift and accurate. It features 3D tracking, which works very well — even in relatively dim lighting — to track your subject throughout a frame, as long as the subject stays within the 11 focus points of the sensor. It’s very useful when taking photos of pets, for example, but it also works a treat for candid portraits of people. “

Nikon D3000 Press Release

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 30th July 2009 – Nikon announces the simplest, most accessible DSLR to date, the D3000.

Jordi Brinkman, Product Manager for Nikon Europe says: “The D3000 dispels the view that DSLR cameras are complicated and makes taking great pictures simpler than ever before. You can really concentrate on having fun with photography and the Guide mode helps you to get the best results with the minimum of fuss.”

DSLR, pure and simple
The D3000 is designed for anyone who wants to take pictures without worrying about settings. You can select from a choice of subject parameters and the camera will do the rest, and the instant response time means you never miss a moment. The 11-point autofocus system ensures everyone is in focus, and the bright viewfinder means you get what you want, when you want it.

Great pictures, automatically
The 10.2 megapixel sensor, powerful EXPEED processing system and brilliant NIKKOR lenses ensure excellent pictures wherever you are, whatever you or your subject is doing. The comprehensive exposure metering system, ISO 1600 sensitivity and built-in pop up flash make light work of dark places.

Guide the way
For the DSLR first timer, the intelligent Guide mode helps you get the most from the potential DSLR photography offers. It simplifies the camera set up and shows you how to get better pictures. If you want to develop your picture taking, you can. If you want to concentrate on the subject, you can do that too. Either way, the D3000 does it effortlessly and automatically.

3-inch LCD screen
The 3-inch LCD screen means you can share your efforts with family and friends and makes retouching your pictures in camera great fun. Beyond the Guide mode, the GUI menus are larger and simpler to use thanks to extensive use of visuals instead of text. The wide variety of exciting in-camera processing effects means you can get really creative with your pictures and share them with friends and family.

Anytime and anywhere
Whatever you do, wherever you go, the D3000 is a must have for any family event or day out. The camera’s comprehensive technologies and tough exterior are ready to handle whatever your free time can throw at it. The exclusive dust reduction system with Airflow control minimises the impact of dust on the image sensor and its compact size and weight – and tough housing – on both body and lens make the D3000 impossible to leave behind.

Key features:

- 10.2megapixel CCD sensor. Even in low light the image resolution makes easy work of big prints and sharp enlargements.
- 11-point autofocus system. Keeps even the fastest moving subjects in focus, often the biggest challenge for compact cameras
- Fast response. The start up time and shutter lag means you can capture the shot almost instantly, without the delayed response time common of compact cameras
- Guide mode. Simply the easiest way to get great pictures, without having to read the manual
- 3-inch TFT. With pictures this good, you will need a great screen to share them with friends and family
- EXPEED image processing. Exclusive system to deliver rich, bright results close to what you saw with your own eyes
- Picture Controls. Lets you set the look and mood of your images before you shoot
- 3 fps continuous shooting allows you to capture fast-moving action at 3 frames per second
- Intuitive ergonomics. We challenge anyone to pick up a D3000 and it not to feel part of your hand
- Stylish discrete appearance. The D3000 does not become a barrier between you and your subject, resulting in natural looking expressions
- Compact, light and durable. It won’t fit in your pocket, but with pictures this good you will find a shoulder to hang it on

New Guide mode
In-camera guidance is provided by the new Guide mode, which employs an easy-to-use interface that makes it easy for first-time users to select shooting modes. Additionally, after selecting an item in Guide mode, camera settings can be further adjusted in order to obtain optimal results.

Nikon DX-format CCD sensor; 10.2 effective megapixels
At 10.2 effective megapixels, the D3000 produces high-resolution images that enable beautiful enlargements without loss of sharpness. Normal ISO sensitivity is ISO 100 to 1600 but for added shooting versatility, a Hi 1 setting increases sensitivity to ISO 3200.

EXPEED image processing system
The D3000 is equipped with Nikon’s EXPEED image processing system. EXPEED realises excellent resolution, long tonal scale, and superb colour while also making possible fast processing of the D3000’s advanced imaging functions such as Scene Recognition and Active D-Lighting.

Scene Recognition System
This feature improves accuracy for exposure, white balance, and autofocus by analysing colour and illumination over the entire scene milliseconds prior to shooting. It then adjusts the camera settings accordingly for optimal picture quality.

Active D-Lighting
The D3000 incorporates Nikon’s Active D-Lighting function which can vastly improve shadows and highlights of high-contrast scenes. Like the Scene Recognition System, Active D-Lighting utilises the 420-pixel RGB sensor to analyse a scene then adjust exposure to achieve images that closely resemble what the human eye sees. During processing, this function also restores details in the highlight and shadow areas of the image that may have been lost.

11-point AF system with Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module
Employing 11-point autofocus, driven by Nikon’s Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module, the D3000 delivers fast, precise focus over a wide area of the frame. Four versatile AF modes are available: single-point AF for stationary subjects, especially ones that are off-centre; dynamic-area AF for moving subjects; auto-area AF when you want the D3000 to automatically determine the proper focus method; and 3D-tracking (11 points) AF for maintaining focus on subjects even if the composition changes.

3.0-in. LCD monitor
Image playback and viewing menus is now easier than ever thanks to the 3.0-in., 230k-dot TFT LCD monitor. Text size is also 20% larger than on previous Nikon digital SLR cameras.

Picture Control System
The Picture Control System gives users the ability to customise key digital image capture characteristics to suit personal preferences.Six settings are available: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, and Landscape.

In-camera photo editing
After shooting, the D3000’s photo editing functions allow for in-camera retouching, reducing the need for a computer to enhance or modify images. The D3000 introduces a new Miniature effect under its Retouch Menu that modifies images to look like pictures of miniature models. Each editing function is applied to a copy of the image, with the original left unmodified.

Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System
Dust reduction is handled by the Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System. This is a comprehensive solution that reduces the generation and accumulation of dust as well as measures to remove dust. A key element of the solution is the Airflow Control System, which directs dust away from the image sensor. The system also includes an image sensor cleaning function that activates automatically when the D3000 is powered on or off. This vibrates the low-pass filter (located in front of the sensor) to free it from dust.

Superb NIKKOR lenses
The D3000 opens up a wide range of possibilities for creative shooting thanks to full compatibility with the extensive lineup of NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses. From ultra wide-angle and micro to super telephoto, NIKKOR lenses give users the means to explore their creativity to the fullest.

Nikon D3000 Other Features

- Extensive playback options that allow viewing of images one at a time or in batches of 4, 9, and 72 as well as Calendar view that organises images by shooting date and time. A histogram display is also available that shows exposure data for a magnified area of the image.
- Highly durable shutter unit tested to 100,000 cycles.
- Long-lasting Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL9a that provides up to 550 shots per charge. (CIPA standard, with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and flash fired at full power once every other shot.)
- Built-in flash with a guide number of approx. 12/39 (ISO 100, m/ft., 20°C/68°F) and support for Nikon’s i-TTL flash control.
- Support for the Nikon Creative Lighting System when using SB-900, SB-600, or SB-400 Speedlights, or the SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander.
- Compatible with all NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses that have an autofocus motor.
- Compatible with the optional Wireless Remote Control ML-L3. There are two shutter release modes available when using the control: Quick Response mode for immediate triggering of the shutter release and Delayed Remote mode, which delays triggering for two seconds.
- Viewfinder grid lines that aid in picture composition.
- Compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards
- Includes Nikon ViewNX image browsing and editing software, which lets you organize, label, and select images as well as perform NEF (RAW) image editing adjustments and conversions.
- Photos captured with the D3000 can be used with optional Nikon Capture NX 2 photo-editing software, which features patented U Point® technology and powerful tools for quick and easy photo editing, including enhanced NEF (RAW) Editing.
