KenRockwell - 1/8/2007 has a complete comparison of the Nikon D200 vs. the Canon 5D and here is the conclusion - "Yes, as I said, my 5D totally smokes my D200 for huge prints if you've got the time to set it up correctly.

These two cameras are in completely different worlds of resolution and sharpness, just as different as they are in terms of usability of their LCD monitors. My Canon's LCD is so bad that I only can guess at what I've shot while I'm still in the field. Most people are perfectly happy with it, but not if you compare it to any of Canon's or Casio's point-and-shoots or any of the modern Nikon DSLR LCDs."

If it makes it any more palatable, perhaps it’s best to consider the 5D not as expensive compared to the 30D and D200, but a bargain compared to the 1Ds Mark II. It may not have mainstream appeal, but the 5D remains a decent upgrade for many Canon owners and a camera we've greatly enjoyed using since its launch."

ThinkCamera - 9/22/2006 - has reviewed the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D and here's the verdict - "The EOS 5D isn't the ideal camera for everyone and there are some minor compromises as well as some excellent features. It isn't a point and shoot camera by any means and both the body and the price tag are substantial - but it's smaller and better priced than many full-frame sensor cameras. If this is your first foray up the chain of D-SLR's and you don't want to spend too much first time round, the EOS-5D is a good starting point. Performance is neither exceptional nor lacking: for example whilst it doesn't compete with extra-fast models designed for sports photography, you won't find it slowing you down even when you're shooting in RAW. It should be viewed as a very good prosumer camera rather than a professional one - many pros use it but they are generally happier to work within its limitations than spend 3 times as much on a 1DS MkII."

Pros:
35mm-equivalent sensor produces excellent high-resolution images with exceptionally low noise

Cons:
Neither the convenience of consumer camera controls nor the locked settings of high-end pro cameras.

In summary the positive points of the Canon EOS 5D are:
Excellent performance across all ISO sensitivities.
Build quality (although there is still room for improvement in some areas).
Separate Red, Green and Blue histogram display.
Viewfinder is bright and clear.

The negative points:
Time taken to display RAW images.
Vignetting at wide angles.
Value for money.
Autofocus points are not spread as far across the frame as I would like.

Against:
- The clearness of the captures is very good.
- Considerably slow burst, even being a camera for calm photography.
- It has only three quality levels JPEG, when Mark II offers the triple.
- Some balance of prefixed targets do not work well, as it either does not do the automatic one in scenes with light of tungsten.
- Somewhat complex screen menus.
- It does not take integrated a flash of pop-up type (although if it is for the optical viewfinder, we accepted it).
- It would not have been good to incorporated an autofocus light.
