Apple announced the next generation of iPod nanos will arrive with a video camera. Two new models are announced today featuring either 8 or 16GB of memory.

The new nano features a 2.2 inch display along with a camera that records 640×480 standard definition video at 30 frames per second. One of fifteen filters can be added to video ranging from Sepia to more intense choices like Cyborg and Light Tunnel. Four filters can be previewed on-screen in real-time.
“It’s disappointing that the camera can’t shoot stills, but the Nano’s super-slim design and slick interface means that it’ll nonetheless appeal to young folk who just want a convenient all-in-one device that will let them play music and video, and shoot video clips of their friends.”
“It offers something better than most phones but isn’t even top dog there. At the end of the day, you still have to take a camcorder out with you and a stills device as well. Nice bit of fun but it just doesn’t solve any problems.”
“Without question, the fifth-generation model is Apple’s best iPod nano yet, and the 16GB version is exceptionally good value. That’s not to say this nano is perfect though, and, unless you badly want a video camera, there’s no reason to upgrade from the previous model. Overall, it’s even more feature-packed than its predecessors, yet leaves intact the spot-on functionality that we’ve always adored.”

It appears Apple computer is getting ready to reinvent the digital camera. Imagine a digital photography computer instead of a point-and-shoot digital camera. Take that thought one step farther and imagine an iPod Touch with a quality camera and lens. Speculators agree that’s almost to the letter what we’re taking about.

Industry chatter indicates Apple is purchasing many 3 and 5 megapixel camera CCDs from Omnivision for upcoming embedded products. Again, industry sources are certain the 3MP cameras will show up in next month’s iPhones.

DigiTimes says:

“The company [Omnivision] is also said to have secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year.”

Since it would essentially be an iPod touch that means it has Wifi, Photo Apps, and access to Apple’s App Store. That means you could edit and directly upload your videos and pictures onto the web, Facebook and Flickr. You could even send these pictures to get printed online or at your nearest COSTCO. Or just simply use Mail/AIM to send photos to friends.

And since this new camera is an iPod it would have all the goodies of an iPod. Music, Maps, Email,VoIP phone, IM clients, etc. so talk about convergence. If this rumor is correct then considering the power and capability of this iPod Touch Camera you literally would have a lot of power, image capture and connectivity at your finger tips.
