PCMag – 25 February’08 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and feels the camera is not worth buying.
Pocket-lint – 21 January’08 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and points out the anti shake button only causes an increase in ISO which gets you clearer pictures but be prepared for lots of digital noise. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“You get pretty much all the functions you would expect in a compact with the addition of family face detection insuring all the important people in your pictures are well focused. If you are in to YouTube then you will be particularly happy with this camera considering it arrives with a function just for producing YouTube ready to go videos. Picture quality was not anything to stand up and cheer about but they had good color balance and were reasonably free of digital noise.”
LapTopMag – 19 December’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and noted the camera has just too many buttons. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“Shutterbugs who just want to capture the occasional dog or baby in motion should definitely go for the EX-S880 or a similar digicam. In fact, anyone who expects to shoot more photos than video should invest in a good digital still camera; most current models capture very good clips, and some are even capable of recording very good sound, too. The Casio Exilim Card EX-S880 is a well-rounded choice. This camera (as well as others with similar capabilities) is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and offers many options in terms of manual controls. And 47 minutes should do the trick for capturing special moments.”
ComputerActive – 13 December’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and felt the cameras main selling point was the video blog mode. Here’s an excerpt from their review -
“At the end of the day though we can’t escape the fact that, when it comes to image quality, the EX-S880’s swan-like feathers reveal an ugly duckling.”
Cameras.co.uk – 06 December’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and it scores well for small size and ease of operation. Here’s an excerpt from their review verdict -
“It is difficult to find a truly thin digital camera that offers exceptional picture quality. The Casio Exilim EX-S880 tries hard, but does not quite hit the heights when it comes to the quality of photos it produces. That’s a shame as I found it very easy to use.”
TrustedReviews – 23 November’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and thought it had outstanding image quality. Here’s an excerpt from their review verdict -
“With the Exilim EX-S880, Casio once again proves that it is a force to be reckoned with in the digital camera market. Although it is competing with some very impressive products from other manufacturers, there are few that can match its combination of ultra-compact size, excellent build quality, striking design, crisp performance, superior image quality and fantastic value for money. If you’re looking for a pocket compact the S880 should be near the top of your list.”
PCWorld – 20 November’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and points out that due to inconsistent picture quality you might want to look elsewhere. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The EX-S880 lacks optical image stabilization, instead raising the ISO sensitivity in its antishake mode to enable faster shutter speeds. Exposure compensation lets you adjust the brightness easily, but you’ll find other manual controls. The solid metal body comes in a choice of black or red, but the anodized-aluminum finish scratches easily.”
DigitalCameraReview – 26 October’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and noted the white balance had problems in some indoor lighting situations. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The Casio Exilim Card cameras typically don’t change much from their predecessors and the S880 is just a minor upgrade from the S770. The most significant updates are that the S880 has face detection capability and Casio’s new optimized-for-YouTube movie capture mode. The S880 can take some good pictures, but it struggles a bit indoors, with shaky white balance and an under-powered flash. Camera usability is good, with quick performance, easy to change shooting settings, and excellent battery life. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced, stylish, ultra-thin camera, the Casio Exilim EX-S880 deserves to be considered.”
Steves-Digicams – 24 October’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and warns that the LCD is really reflective and in bight outdoor situations it can be a problem. The final conclusion;
“Blazing fast performance and packed in a stylish and durable shell I still feel the quality of its images is not quite up to par with similar models in this category. That said, the Casio EX-S880 offers an Ok value for an 8-megapixel model that can be stuffed in the smallest of pockets, just be sure to take a good look at the competition before making your final purchase decision.”
InfoSync – 05 October’07 – reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and thought the large LCD screen squeezed the operational buttons to the right side making one handed operation almost impossible. The final conclusion;
“A thin card-styled camera, the EX-S880 is both good-looking and functional. The metal case is attractive yet durable, but the standout feature is the dedicated video record button, and what it means for the interface. By having only one shooting mode but two separate buttons for video and still photos, Casio has churned out the most convenient camera for shooting both stills and videos that we’ve tested.”
CNET reviews the Casio Exilim EX-S880 and writes;
“The Casio Exilim EX-S880 tries to slide by as an upgraded S770 with a higher resolution and a different image processor. Unfortunately, it doesn’t meet the standards set by its predecessor. While a new image processor usually means faster performance, the S800 performs slower and photos are terribly soft compared to the older camera. The addition of face detection and YouTube uploading software present mildly handy features, but they really don’t justify purchasing the S880 if you can still find an EX-S770.”

Press Release

DOVER, NJ, JULY 10, 2007 Casio, Inc. and its parent company, Casio Computer Co., Ltd., announced today the release of two new digital cameras with the cutting-edge EXILIM Engine 2.0 image processing module. In conjunction with the release of these cameras, Casio, Inc. announced today their agreement with YouTube to include a unique YouTube Capture mode and bundle software to provide ideal settings for recording, storing and uploading video on the company’s newest EXILIM digital cameras – EX-S880 and EX-Z77. This agreement represents an effort by Casio, Inc. to directly engage the YouTube community by simplifying the process of creating and sharing videos.

The increased popularity of video sharing Web sites such as YouTube offers a great opportunity for innovation, said John Homlish, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Casio, Inc. We recognized that there was a demand for an easier way to upload high-quality video and are thrilled to be the first digital camera company to be able to offer a solution for consumers.

Casio’s YouTube Capture mode records in next-generation MPEG-4 H.264 high quality video format; this provides an ideal compression ratio that allows users to record longer without having to sacrifice the quality of their movies. This mode also provides sharp resolution (640 x 480) and a frame rate of up to 30 frames per second. Casio is providing consumers with a groundbreaking tool to get videos recorded and uploaded directly to YouTube in as few as two steps! Casio has also included an exclusive software application that makes it seamless to upload movies to YouTube. This technology will also allow users to upload multiple videos at once, making it easier than ever before to share original content online.

We are constantly looking for ways to make it simpler for our community to create and share videos, said Hunter Walk, YouTube product management. The YouTube Capture mode featured on these Casio EXILIM cameras is remarkably innovative and easy to use, and will further expand and diversify the incredible range of originally-created content for which YouTube is known.

The stylish 8.1 megapixel EXILIM Card EX-S880 is the latest addition to the popular EXILIM Card series, known for its sophisticated design in a thin card size. The sophisticated 7.2 megapixel EXILIM Zoom EX-Z77 joins Casio’s successful EXILIM Zoom series, whose excellent balance of superior functionality and stylish, compact look characterize the EXILIM brand. Both models add enhanced movie functionality and are the first within the line to feature YouTube Capture mode.

The new cameras also feature a blur reduction function that uses motion analysis technology, an auto-tracking AF system, and face detection technology. The combination of face detection technology and the auto-tracking AF system ensures that, once the focus locks on to a person’s face, it will stay sharp and maintain the right exposure, even if the person moves. Casio has made it much easier to capture beautiful portraits.

Exclusive to the Casio EXILIM line of digital cameras in the U.S., and featured in the EX-S880 and the EX-Z77 is the eBay® Best Shot Mode. eBay Best Shot takes photos at a size that is image optimized for display on eBay, allowing picture takers to more quickly and easily create photos for selling items on eBay. For ease of use, eBay photos are stored in a special eBay directory.

The EX-S880 is available in red and black with an MSRP of $299.99. The EX-Z77 is available in black, blue, pink and silver with an MSRP of $229.99. Both cameras will be available at retail in August.

Casio will have the marketing exclusivity for the YouTube feature during the Holiday ‘07 season. All cameras that feature YouTube Capture mode will feature a custom YouTube sticker logo, licensed by YouTube. YouTube Capture mode will be included in Casio’s 2007 Holiday line-up of EXILIM digital cameras. The cameras with YouTube Capture mode and the upload functionality software will be available in a bundle package to be sold during the holiday season, allowing users to receive all the hardware and software necessary for upload for one price.
