Canon PowerShot SD780 IS/Digital IXUS 100 IS is a 12.1 megapixel optically image stabilized compact camera that features a 3x optical zoom, motion detection, face detection, 2.5 inch LCD and a ISO range from 80 – 3200.
Review Index – (updated 10 November’09)
“This camera is a little dated especially if you consider it only has 3x and all the other competitors on the market sporty wide angles and really long zooms. To make matters worse it was awkward to handle and it has a miniature viewfinder. On the other hand it performs well and photo quality was good.”

“Canon has taken the concept of a fashionable, easy-to-use point-and-shoot that also performs well and knocked it out of the park. The PowerShot SD780 IS is sure to turn heads and keep casual photograpers happy with its image quality and fun features, though you don’t get much in the way of manual controls.”

DigitalCameraInfo
“One of the main problems we had with this camera is tied to its small size. Due to the short supply of real estate on the camera’s back, the buttons all felt very small. This, coupled with their placement flush with the body (i.e., not raised at all), it is very hard to accurately press the button you want. Likewise, the optical viewfinder, while a nice touch, is far too small to use in all but the most dire of situations.”

“The SD780 is the smallest good camera I’ve ever used. I’d suggest it as a first choice for tag-along digital camera. As a main camera, I prefer a full-sized, wider-angle compact like the SD880, but that’s just me. The SD780 is much smaller than specifications suggest because its corners are all rounded.”

LapTopMag
“In most regards, the SD780 IS is a solid mid-range point-and-shoot: it has decent image quality, records HD video, and is one of the most attractive pocket cameras we’ve seen in a while. Some flaws, however, such as overexposed shots when using Macro and low-light performance, hold it back from a higher rating. But casual photographers might rather have a camera this tiny than one that excels at close-ups or low-light shooting.”

Neocamera
“The Canon Powershot SD780 IS compromises a bit too much for its svelt size and dense sensor, particularly if compared to the rather similar SD1200 IS. While it still keeps some characteristics of Canon ultra-compacts, like a sturdy metallic body and well-rounded feature set, the image quality is below average.”

CNET
“Photo quality is very good, but still subject to problems characteristic of point-and-shoot cameras of this size and price. Some smudginess from noise reduction starts appearing at ISO 200, but all photos were generally soft. Subjects get noticeably softer and smoother as the ISO gets higher, but detail remains reasonably good up to and including ISO 800.”

“The camera is pleasingly responsive, intuitive to use for anyone who has handled a Canon IXUS before and, being small enough to slip into a shirt top pocket is the kind of camera you’ll carry with you anywhere and everywhere. The result? A greater likelihood of taking that winning shot. It all adds up to a Photography Blog Recommended award.”

IT Reviews
“Canon’s latest Digital IXUS is targeted at the style-conscious snapper who wants to look cool while letting the camera do most of the work. It’s a shame about the limited zoom and slightly hit-and-miss shooting mode selection, but the end quality remains impressive.”

“This is a high quality, pocket sized digital camera. It takes very good photos, looks attractive and is well made. You will also find a few extra features including image stabilization, a viewfinder and High Definition movies.”

“The Canon PowerShot SD780 Digital ELPH produces good image quality below ISO 800, with nicely saturated colors, low color fringing and distortion and no redeye (thanks to the redeye removal tool available in both shooting and playback modes). If you don’t mind making small 4 x 6 prints, then you could use the camera’s ISO 3200 mode, which lowers resolution to 2 MP but quality is comparable to native 2 megapixel cameras several years back.”

“I really fell in love with this camera. It lived up to my expectations. Usually when I anticipate a product so much I get disappointed when it’s not as good as I thought. However with this camera it really amazed me, GREAT JOB CANON! However some things in the user interface could get fixed, it took me about five minutes to figure out where the color swap function is for images.”

“The performance and image quality were decent, although the specifications of the optics are somewhat of a slight letdown. However, that probably won’t stop fashionistas who want a sleek-looking shooter.”

“The results are generally good, but more discerning photographers may feel they have to work the settings to get exactly what they want, but for your average user looking for a versatile compact camera, then theSD780 IS / 100 IS appeals. For those who actually want to make use of the viewfinder on a daily basis it is a less appealing.”

“We were expecting an identical performance, but the PowerShot SD780 IS surprised us with a significant reduction in fringing compared to the PowerShot SD960 IS. In low light, both cameras were neck and neck, but we actually liked the PowerShot SD780 IS in bright light.”

“I hand-picked the Canon SD780 IS from the range of Spring 2009 digital cameras, hoping it would be a good performer, as I expect its appearance alone to make it a great seller. We’ve even see other sites give it a positive review. Though we really like the way the camera works, and at least two of us had it on our short list as our next pocket camera, the fact that it can’t exceed the capabilities of the two-year-old 7.1-megapixel Canon SD1000 scuttled our plans.”

StevesDigicams
” I truly enjoyed using the SD780 IS. This camera produces images that rival that of larger more expensive digicams, and offers AF performance that leaves many of them in the dust as well. I was slightly disappointed that the burst mode was slower than its predecessor however I don’t see too many of the consumers that buy this camera using that feature often.”

PCMag
“If you’re looking for a camera that can capture HD video and has even fancier features, you have lots of options; check out our latest roundup for several ideas. But don’t overlook the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS. In this camera, Canon has delivered all the basics: great image quality, HD video capture, and fast speeds in a small body.”

Camera Labs
“But with small size inevitably comes compromises. The 3x optical range is unremarkable, you can’t zoom while filming video, and we noticed softness in the corners of images on our sample. Considering the size, it’s pretty remarkable to find an optical viewfinder squeezed in there, but it’s so small we can’t see many people using it – indeed you forget its even there most of the time.”

Digital Camera Review
“We certainly wish the SD780’s lens was better, in terms of versatility and performance, and Canon’s very aggressive processing is a “love it or hate it” proposition for most. Assuming the street price lands where we expect it to, though, this is one surprisingly versatile, surprisingly small, and – considering all of this – surprisingly affordable little ultracompact.”

Press Release
Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 18 February 2009: Canon today strengthens its reputation for excellence in digital compact camera design with two new models: the slimmest ever Digital IXUS model, the 12.1 Megapixel Digital IXUS 100 IS, and the 10 Megapixel Digital IXUS 95 IS. Both models feature a new Smart Auto mode, which uses Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to help users take great shots with ease. The Digital IXUS 100 IS also includes the option to shoot HD movies (1280 x 720, 30fps) and HDMI connectivity.
Replacing the Digital IXUS 85 IS, the Digital IXUS 100 IS features a striking, 18.4mm wide stainless steel body, finished in a choice of silver, black, gold or red – making it ideal for the most prestigious of occasions. The Digital IXUS 95 IS, successor to the Digital IXUS 80 IS, offers an ultra-stylish, take-anywhere alternative in silver, grey, blue or pink. Both models offer framing flexibility via a 3.0x optical zoom, with consistently blur-free results provided by Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer.
Built for stunning images
Generous resolutions of 10.0 Megapixels and 12.1 Megapixels allow for huge A2+ size prints or the freedom to crop images to improve composition while retaining outstanding image detail. The addition of Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor allows both models to deliver ultra-fast operation, and rich, low-noise images with outstanding clarity and colour reproduction.
Beauty and brains
For incredible pictures with extreme ease, both models incorporate a new
Smart Auto mode. This uses Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to analyse the shooting scene in detail – checking subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then instantly selects one of 18 possible modes, to ensure perfect settings for the scene.
Thanks to DIGIC 4 processing, Canon’s intelligent technologies are now more accurate than ever. Improved Motion Detection aids blur-free capture of moving subjects. i-Contrast brightens the dark areas of a photo without blowing out correctly-exposed areas. Face Detection Technology can register multiple faces in a frame and adjusts settings for better results; with the Digital IXUS 100 IS, this includes new Blink Detection, which helps avoid the disappointment of a mistimed portrait shot. FaceSelf-Timer simplifies group shots or self portraits by waiting until the user enters the frame before shooting. Auto Red-Eye Correction removes the unwanted red-eye effect caused by flash photography, either during or after shooting.
In addition, both models offer a smarter, newly improved User Interface – making functions even easier and more intuitive to access.
Movies and more
Despite its tiny proportions, the Digital IXUS 100 IS includes the ability to shoot pin-sharp, ultra-detailed video clips in High Definition (1280 x 720) – which can be played back on any HDTV via an HDMI connection. The Digital IXUS 95 IS offers fun movie capture at VGA resolution, with the option of Long Play movies for extended shooting.
On both models, a 2.5” PureColor LCD II offers bright, detailed image preview and review. The inclusion of an optical viewfinder offers users an alternative way to compose shots.
“United by some of our smartest technology yet, these models offer two compelling new choices to Digital IXUS fans: prestige, slimline design, or great style for everyday use,” commented Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe.

- DIGIC 4 enables Smart Auto to be more accurate and give better images.
Introduction
Spring 2009 sees the launch of a new step-change in image quality for Canon cameras. For as long as most users can remember, AUTO mode has been a feature of point and shoot cameras -allowing minimal intervention or expertise needed to achieve satisfactory focus and exposure. Since the introduction and rise of digital photography, there have been many technological advances and additional shooting modes, yet AUTO mode remains the staple favourite of many snappers. Research conducted by Canon also reveals that AUTO is one of the most frequently used shooting modes.
Cameras with IQ
From today Canon are making AUTO mode different. The latest range of Digital Still Camera products launched incorporate a new smart system that uses Scene Detection Technology, which along with other advanced Canon technologies, leads to one of the most comprehensive and clever AUTO modes ever seen on a digital camera. Whilst complex in technology, Smart AUTO still delivers the peace of mind and ease of use for point and shooters that has always been expected from selecting the familiar green icon mode.
With intelligent and integrated use of key functions such as focus, exposure, ISO sensitivity, flash, dynamic range adjustments and Intelligent Contrast Correction, Canon Cameras have never been so smart. Added to these Canon Motion Detection and Face Detection Technology plus advanced Noise Reduction, together with pleasing colour rendition all delivered by the DIGIC 4 processor, mean when selecting AUTO mode on these latest models, users can be assured of the best in image quality even in more challenging shooting conditions.
Smart Auto overview:
Using Scene Detection Technology, Smart AUTO can distinguish parameters allowing the camera to carry out optimum processing for a shot by:
-Detecting people
- Evaluating Distances
- Evaluating Subject and camera movement information
- Analysing Scene Brightness
- Analysing Colour
