Reviewers Conclusions & Verdicts - (updated 30 October’08)

Steves Digicams
“While I did have an issue with the amount of noise at higher ISO settings, the camera does have the ability to capture beautiful images; just keep the ISO at 200 and below.”

“It delivers extra zoom in a compact body, with a pleasing design. It performed well in my tests and would be up near the top of my shortlist if I was looking for this type of camera.”

GoodGearGuide
“Everything right down to ISO 80 is a little grainier than it should be. You won’t notice unless the shots are magnified quite a bit but it is definitely there. “

“We liked the Canon’s long zoom, and picture quality is very good. But there are a few operational quirks, and unless you need a camera with a very long zoom and don’t want to go down the DSLR route, it’s hard to see who else the PowerShot SX110 IS will appeal to.”

PhotoReview
“The image stabiliser enabled us to shoot at shutter speeds down to 1/15 second at wide and mid-range focal lengths but blurring occurred at 1/60 second with longer settings. However, the lack of AF area selection was a disadvantage in many situations and shooting with longer focal lengths in low light levels resulted in numerous blurred shots because the camera focused on the wrong part of the subject.”

“The camera had a tendency to ov erexpose images when left to its automatic settings. Exposure can be manually adjusted, but then that does go against the user-friendly stripped-down ethos. When it does get it right, however, photos are impressively sharp and crisply detailed, although colours are at their best with the Vivid setting selected.”

“If you were considering a Panasonic TZ5 but you really want manual exposure options, then the SX110 ISO is just what you’re looking for. It is fast, well made, versatile, easy to use and has outstanding picture quality. It’s a little expensive, but it really is one of the best general-purpose digital cameras on the market.”

TrustedReviews
“The negatives are that it eats up alkaline AAs, the optical zoom can’t be used when filming video and images can be noisy if you stray above ISO 400, but the build, the ease of use, the range of family-orientated features and that reasonable price off-set any performance grumbles.”

DigitalCameraReview
“In truth, the SX110 targets a different user than the TZ5. There are manual controls here, for starters, and the simple but well-stocked menus and solid performance of the SX110 encourage you to get out and take some shots rather than get wrapped up in lots of novelty.”

Actual Owner Feedback

“Out of the box impressions are excellent. Skipped the manual and wanted to see how it did in Auto. If you owned an SX100 or read the reviews this camera fixes any cons that were written. The LCD is very bright and no issues in the sun.”

“After doing all the research, I just knew this was the camera for me. My main camera is a Canon Rebel and I was looking for a backup camera to use when I don’t feel like carrying the big one around. When I read the specs and reviews for this one, I rushed out to get it. “
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com
“It takes nice, in focus pictures, and the image stabilization is useful in avoiding flash shots, which need some color adjustment. It snaps much quicker than my old Lumix TZ7, and the large display is very nice, although a little difficult to see in bright sunlight.”
Portion of user comment on Amazon.com
“A thing that is missing is a Sports mode, which is a feature to shoot fast moving objects.”

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 26 August 2008: Canon today strengthens its PowerShot range of digital cameras with the addition of a new SX “Super Zoom” model: the 9 Megapixel PowerShot SX110 IS, which replaces the popular SX100 IS. Featuring a 10x optical zoom with optical Image Stabilizer – plus a 3.0” LCD – the PowerShot SX110 IS delivers outstanding telephoto reach in an even more compact and lightweight body.

A full range of Canon technologies – including Face Detection Technology, Motion Detection Technology and a new Easy Mode – help everyone take great photos, while experienced users can also enjoy the creative possibilities offered by full manual control.

Maximum reach, minimum weight With a 10x Canon optical zoom – featuring a 35mm film equivalent focal length of 36-360mm - the PowerShot SX110 IS brings even distant subjects into view, making it the perfect camera for everything from school sports days to family holidays. Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer technology combats the effects of camera shake, delivering sharp, blur-free shots throughout the camera’s extensive zoom range.

Effortless ease and creative control The PowerShot SX110 IS features a wide range of 20 shooting modes designed to achieve optimum results in a wide range of lighting conditions – a great help for users of all levels, from complete novices to more experienced photographers.

Shooting modes include a new Easy Mode, which sees all shooting settings chosen automatically by the camera – perfect for beginners prone to making unsuitable adjustments. Easy Mode also limits Playback options to simple image viewing and deletion functions. At the other end of the spectrum, experienced users can switch to full manual control, and customize settings for special effects or unusual lighting. To keep shots looking sharp, Motion Detection Technology – activated in High ISO Auto mode – uses Face Detection Technology, the optical Image Stabilizer and scene information to identify subject motion and camera-shake. ISO is also optimized for minimum blur and maximum image quality.
