Reviewers Conclusions & Verdicts - (updated 31 March ‘08)
DigiCamReview - 31 March’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and thinks it’s the perfect pocket camera. Here’s a summary of their review -
“About the only missing from this feature rich compact is a wider lens. Image quality is a little shaky with photos displaying some purple fringing and a little digital noise but the color is accurate and saturation is good. Surprisingly the reviewer found the face detection function on the SX100 pretty useful in that it quickly checks whether the subject is smiling and not blinking.

TechTree - 03 March’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and points out the coolest aspect of this camera is its 10x zoom. Here’s a summary of their review -
“While the reviewer remarked that focusing was quick and spot on they also noted the red-eye reduction feature rarely worked. The cameras face recognition system worked well and the camera performed well in low light situations. A couple of down sides were the AA batteries caused a flash delay which REALLY slows the flash taking sessions way down. Second, the LCD worked great indoors but out in bright light it becomes very challenging.

DevHardware - 15 February’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and notes it has performance issues. Here’s a summary of their review -
“If your criteria for choosing a camera is strictly excellent image quality then the SX100 might be worth considering. This is not the the speediest superzoom on the market, in fact, the reviewer considered it, slow. In addition if you turn on the flash the cameras performance grinds down even further. Its long range shots were among the best the reviewer had ever seen though.

DCResource - 17 January’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and feels for the price it has a nice set of features. Here’s a summary of their review -
“Photo quality was good with great color and middle of the road sharpness. As with a lot of cameras in this range it’s best to avoid using ISO above 800 for the obvious reason of digital noise. One big problem with this camera was red eye however Canon added a feature that allows you to retouch red eye out in camera, which is really handy. All in all not an impressive camera but as an entry level dependable shooter it worth a look.”

ComputerActive - 12 January’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and thinks the photo quality is outstanding. And after all that’s the bottom line on any digital camera isn’t it? Here’s a summary of their review -
“The SX100 IS has what everyone likes, larger control buttons, plus when you push them things happen quickly. It’s too bad that with such a big bad 10x zoom Canon chose NOT to let you use it in movie mode, kind of lame… Granted you do not have a lot of manual control over this camera but if you’re into getting close to your subject and want a camera that’s fast out of the starting block this just might be your camera.”

DPReview - 21 December’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and writes that it’s hard to find a camera with better image quality. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The SX100 IS offers reliable image quality, a big zoom range and a good variety of photographic controls in a relatively compact body at a very competitive price. If you don’t mind the slow flash recycling times (which somewhat limit the camera’s use as a social snapshot tool) the SX100 IS is a perfect piece of equipment for anyone wanting to cover a large variety of photographic situations without breaking the bank or carrying a backpack full of lenses. It offers a well balanced package, value for money and is simply fun to use.”

Imaging-Resource - 18 December’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and really like the LCD even in bright outdoors shooting situaltions. Here’s an excerpt from their review verdict -
“Overall, the PowerShot SX100IS is an enjoyable, versatile, and very well thought-out digital camera. A truly powerful zoom lens really frees you to get close to action you might otherwise have missed, and optical image stabilization ensures that when you do, the shots won’t be a blurry mess. A range of manual controls and options ensure there’s room to grow into the camera’s capabilities as your experience increases, but simple presets and auto functions make sure that beginners can still get the shot without needing to understand camera jargon. Image quality, with the exception of some noise related issues, is generally great, with good color and exposure metering, and the ability to tweak output to your tastes.”

Cameras.co.uk - 26 November’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and noticed there was shutter lag when the flash was being used. Here’s an excerpt from their review verdict -
“The Canon Powershot SX100 IS is a more handy size than most other cameras with a 10x optical zoom lens. Picture quality compares well with other similar cameras and there are still plenty of features to get your teeth into.”

DigitalCameraReview - 19 November’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and notes the flash recycle times can literally shut the camera down for as long as 10 seconds. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“The Canon Powershot SX100 IS offers a blend of automatic and manual shooting options that should appeal to a broad range of users. The novice can shoot in auto with confidence that the camera won’t let her down, and the more experienced user can make use of the manual controls to exert creative license on their shots. This relatively compact camera mounts a 10x optical zoom lens and offers good shutter performance, image color and quality along with optical stabilization.”

PhotographyBlog - 15 November’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and didn’t like the fact that inability to adjust the zoom while in shooting video. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“Overall the SX100 IS adds up to one of the more competent performers out there in this price bracket, boasting just the sort of shot-to-shot reliability you want when it’s potentially being passed around everyone from little Agnes to Grandma. I was expecting a performance that was OK and was pleasantly surprised when the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS exceeded it. So that’s another recommendation from the PhotographyBLOG crew for those wanting an all-singing, all-dancing big zoom compact, but without too many distracting specifications or a hefty price tag in tow.”

TrustedReviews - 13 November’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and notes the camera goes to the head of the class for picture quality. Here’s an excerpt from their review verdict -
“For a relatively modest price the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS offers a good range of features to accommodate both novice and more experienced photographers. Its long zoom range gives it added versatility, and its fast performance, superb AF system and high image quality are capable of producing excellent results in a wide range of situations. Its only disadvantages are its bulk and weight, and its poor high-ISO noise reduction.”

PhotoReview - 01 November’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and thought their test pictures were sharp but a little too contrasty. Here’s their review conclusion -
“The PowerShot SX100 IS is built to a price and it shows in the body construction more than in the feature set provided. With an RRP $250 less than the PowerShot S5 IS – which has the same resolution but is better built and has a marginally more sophisticated feature set – it represents a good choice for photographers who want a long-zoom digicam with decent performance at an affordable price. But, if you can afford the extra money – which may not be as much at street price level – the S5 IS would be the better buy.”
DigitalCameraInfo - 31 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and was impressed with the camera’s advanced face detection options. Here’s and excerpt from their review conclusion -
“In terms of image quality, the SX100 IS is an excellent lower-priced option than the Canon PowerShot SD-series, but not significantly better than lower-priced options in the PowerShot A-series. In other words, most PowerShot point-and-shoots released this year have very similar image quality, with the exception of the PowerShot TX1 hybrid and PowerShot G9. PowerShot image quality this year has been marked by excellent color accuracy and white balance performance, nice-looking videos, but also lots of noise and low dynamic range at high ISO speeds. The SX100 IS has the added bonus of performing very well in low light. This camera would be an obvious choice for a relatively inexpensive 10x zoom camera, if it weren’t for the Panasonic Lumix TZ3, which has even better image quality.”
GoodGearGuide - 31 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and notes the sharpness of images is this cameras strong point. Here’s and excerpt from their review -
“Aesthetically the SX100 is very nice. It has a smooth, curved design that helps it stand out a little, and the matte black color scheme differentiates it from the mass of silver models on the market. It is constructed of plastic and thus isn’t as sturdy as some other units, but it sits comfortably in the hand. The controls should be familiar to any Canon veteran but won’t prove a hassle even for novice users.”
ePhotozine - 25 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and thought the image quality was outstanding. Here’s and excerpt from their review verdict -
“The performance of the noise is the most pleasant surprise and is great news for those of you who want a good looking camera with some creative control and one that will work in a bar when you go out at night.”
CNET - 16 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and notes the camera has performance and quality issues. Here’s and excerpt from their review -
“Despite its arguably best-in-class photo quality, the Canon PowerShot SX100’s spotty performance, disappointing movie capture, and occasionally frustrating design keep it from earning a no-brainer recommendation.”
PopPhoto - 06 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot SX100 IS and notes they were less than thrilled with the low “cut corner” resolution LCD. Here’s their bottom line -
“The Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is a cute camera with some powerful functionality hidden beneath an easy-to-use interface. Despite the composite body, it feels good and solid in the hand and it produces very nice images at ISOs 80 and 100. The 10x optically stabilized 36-360mm zoom give a great reach from normal to supertelephoto, and the IS system works to keep the camera steady in both still and video shooting modes. Unfortunately, the low-resolution LCD can be very noisy during capture and medium and high ISO image quality is lacking. The 10x stabilized pocket superzoom category is gaining in popularity, and we’re happy to see this. Canon’s first jump into this arena brings some interesting features and functions (and lack thereof) into this new category. However, the low-resolution LCD and mid and high ISO image quality are disappointments.”
