DigitalLifestyles - 5/1/2007 - has a 3 part review of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write, “There’s no denying that the Ixus 850 manages to pack an awful lot into its stylish, ultra-compact case, and the combination of optical image stabilisation, a 7.1 megapixel sensor and a wide 28-105 mm lens makes for a very attractive take-anywhere package.

The image quality may fall slightly behind the class leaders and the lack of manual controls will frustrate advanced users, but for point’n’shooters looking for an everyday camera, the Ixus 850 could be a camera to consider.

It’s a bit of a pricey number though at around £250, and the lack of durability might be of concern to those who don’t like to mollycoddle their cameras in cases all the time, but the spec sheet does make a compelling read.”

Pocket-lint - 1/24/2007 - likes the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS becaue it offers some neat new touches. They continue to write, “In my view, the Face Detection AF/AE is a gimmick and though it works, it is darn slow here. The AiAF had problems deciding what it should focus on, but the “normal” AF set up is fast and reliable. Therefore, in the end, the Canon IXUS 850IS is reduced from a great looking, well made star performer to a great looking, well made average snapper. Now, put the new wider-angle zoom lens from the 850IS on the 800IS and it would be almost perfect.”

PCAuthority - 1/20/2007 - reviews the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and writes, “While we’re impressed by such innovative features on a digital compact, the image quality largely negates them. The net result is a camera that’s superb as a feature-laden gadget for the casual snapper, but will likely disappoint the serious amateur who wants a backup for their digital SLR.”

DPReview - 1/12/2007 - reviews the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and thinks it’s a dream come true for anyone who appreciates the significant advantages offered by a zoom that starts at 28mm rather than 35 or 38mm. They continue to write - “The SD 700 IS was an easy ‘Highly Recommended’, this one doesn’t quite make the grade simply because here at dpreview we put a lot of weight on image quality, which is the one area where the SD 800 IS can’t compete with the older model.”

ImagingResource - 1/9/2007 - reviews the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and treally likes the cameras image stabilization. They continue to write - “The SD800 is a very responsive camera, with low shutter lag in daylight conditions, and excellent shot-to-shot speeds. It also sports very good battery life, a very capable Movie mode, and excellent download speed. The bright 2.5-inch color LCD monitor is excellent for framing and reviewing shots, and the overall design and layout of the SD800 IS is user-friendly and hassle-free. If you’re looking for a good take anywhere camera with great versatility and good color and tonality, the Canon SD800 IS deserves a close look.”

DPInterface - 12/29/2006 - has reviewed of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “Image quality was overall satisfactory. On one hand, there’s low noise, optimal sharpness and color accuracy was there. The camera’s 3 cm macro mode also means you can get really close. On the other hand, the lens itself probably caused the downsides of image quality on the SD800 IS: Corner softness and color fringing.

I’d definitely recommend the Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH, which is an all-round camera, not having any really huge issues. Despite my recommendation, you may also wanna check out the Panasonic Lumix FX07 and FX50 twins which also have wide-angle lenses but retail for $50 - $100 less. The latter has a huge 3 inch display as well. So take a look at the SD800 IS, and also check out its competitors, and see which one you like better.”

Cameras.co.uk - 12/21/2006 - has released a video turorial of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS.

Steve’s Digicams - 12/1/2006 - reviews of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “If you’re in the market this holiday season for a stylish, durable, and ultra-compact model that captures awesome photos and can be tucked away easily, then this might just be the model you’re looking for. With 7-megapixels of resolution, you can create stunning prints up to poster size!”

DCViews - 11/20/2006 - reviews of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “After two weeks and more than 1000 pictures, we have to say that the Canon SD800 is a very compelling camera that should be seriously considered if you are looking for a quality compact. Several handy functions add greatly to its versatility. The fact that it has a 28mm wide angle zoom will widen its appeal among landscape shooters. The new face detect technology together with optical image stabilisation makes for happy snapshots, whereas the wide ISO range will come in handy in indoor shots without flash.”

DigiCamReview - 11/18/2006 - reviews of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “The Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS is an excellent ultra compact digital camera - image quality isn’t perfect - but it is very good with great colour and detail. Throw in a wide angle lens to help get you get more of your friends in the photo, and then add optical image stabilisation to help make sure your photos are sharp even in low light, and you end up with a cracking camera that you can take anywhere and use in almost every situation. The only aspect of the camera that might put you off is the price when compared to the competition. If you want a highly capable and pocketable digital camera with a wide-angle lens and optical image stabilisation then the Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS is recommended!”

Imaging Resource - 11/10/2006 - has produced a very thorough review of the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “The SD800 is a very responsive camera, with low shutter lag in daylight conditions, and excellent shot-to-shot speeds. It also sports very good battery life, a very capable Movie mode, and excellent download speed. Finally, Canon makes a line of accessory lenses, filters, a slave flash for the PowerShot SD800 as well, greatly expanding your options beyond what you’d normally expect from a compact digicam model.”

Cameras.co.uk - 11/6/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “The Canon IXUS 850 IS is another successful model in the Canon IXUS line. Picture quality is very good and the build quality of the camera also puts it ahead of many rivals. The camera does not come cheap, but its all round capabilities mean it is worth finding the extra money if at all possible.”

Ken Rockwell - 10/30/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and he writes - “The Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS combines every piece of cutting edge technology currently available in the digital camera market into one beautifully made high-performance package, and tops it off with superb image quality. It’s an expensive luxury gadget, but if you really want the best then you should expect to pay a little extra for it.”

Digital Camera Info - 10/11/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “The 7.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS has a solid set of components overshadowed by its newer and trendier technology. Its better features include an improved 2.5-inch LCD screen, a wide 3.8x optical zoom lens, and a built-in flash that does not create terribly unnatural lighting. Coming out ten years after the first Digital ELPH and one year after the first to include optical image stabilization, the SD800 is only the second model in the Canon lineup to provide the IS feature.”

DC Resource - 10-11-2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they write - “Image quality is very good overall, but not without its problems. On the positive side, I was pleased with both exposure and color accuracy. Noise levels are low through ISO 400, and sharpness was right about where I like it. The SD800 does have trouble with three photo quality issues, though: corner softness, purple fringing, and redeye. The first two are the tradeoffs for having a compact, wide-angle lens (and won’t be noticeable when you actually print the photos), while the last one seems to come with the territory in the ultra-compact class.”

CNET - 10/3/2006 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH / IXUS 850 IS and they rate it 7.8 out 10. They continue to write - “The Canon PowerShot SD800 IS is a great point-and-shoot camera. It’s small, it sports a stabilized, wide-angle lens, and it can pump out beautiful shots at a pretty rapid pace. If you want higher resolution and don’t mind losing the optical image stabilization–though we don’t recommend the tradeoff–the Canon PowerShot SD900 and the Casio Exilim EX-Z1000 offer 10 megapixels in ultracompact bodies.”

Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Initial Press Release

Canon’s first wide angle Digital IXUS includes DIGIC III and Face Detection

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 14 September, 2006: Canon today debuts its latest offering for the style-conscious photo enthusiast – the Digital IXUS 850 IS. The 7.1 Megapixel camera introduces wide-angle zoom capability to the Digital IXUS range for the first time with an optical Image Stabilizer and 28mm (35mm equivalent) 3.8x optical zoom lens.

Geared to satisfy serious photographers, the ultra-compact Digital IXUS 850 IS stays true to its design heritage with a smoothly sculpted curvature design and all-metal finish. Enhanced performance and image quality are assured through Canon’s latest DIGIC III image processor , which also enables low-noise ISO 1600 shooting and new Face Detection AF/AE – a Canon technology that detects up to nine faces in a frame and automatically optimises the focus and exposure for great people shots. The Digital IXUS 850 IS will be available from early October. Key specifications include:

* 7.1 Megapixels and 3.8x zoom
* Wide angle 28mm lens with Optical Image Stabilizer
* DIGIC III with Advanced Noise Reduction and Face Detection
* AF/AE Safety Zoom for extra telephoto reach
* ISO 1600
* High resolution 2.5" LCD17 shooting modes including VGA movies (30 fps) with sound
* Range of optional accessories including Underwater Case

“This latest incarnation of the Digital IXUS shows just how far the range has developed since the original analogue IXUS was launched in 1996,” explains Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “By incorporating a string of firsts that will appeal to photo hobbyists – wide angle capability, DIGIC III and Face Detection AF/AE – IXUS continues to innovate.”Wide-angle Digital IXUS.

Offering a focal length range of 28 – 105mm (35mm equivalent), the Digital IXUS 850 IS’s 3.8x optical zoom lens allows photographers to capture wider panoramas, architectural photos and group shots. The lens incorporates Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer to counteract the effects of camera shake for steadier performance in low light, at full zoom or when shooting from moving vehicles.

Image Quality The 7.1 Megapixel sensor ensures that images are captured with all the detail needed for large photo quality prints. Taking advantage of the camera’s resolving power, photographers can use the Safety Zoom feature to expand the zoom range without impacting on image quality – up to 15x zoom when shooting Small size images.

New DIGIC III Processor with Face Detection AF/AE Delivering fast, responsive camera performance and superb image rendering, the new DIGIC III processor also drives Canon’s landmark Face Detection technology. Face Detection AF/AE ensures accurate and bright people shots by automatically detecting faces in a scene and optimising focus and exposure accordingly. The system is designed to cleverly revert to 9-point AiAF if it determines that the main subject is non-human, avoiding focusing errors at tourist attractions and other crowded locations. Face Detection AF/AE performs accurately with large groups and when subjects are distant or move within the frame. Because the technology is hardware-based, it operates at the same rapid speed as Canon’s standard AiAF.

Shooting modes and My Colors Adaptable to almost any shooting situation, the camera’s 17 shooting modes include a new Aquarium Special Scene mode and a manual mode for selection of exposure settings such as White Balance and ISO – now made easier with the inclusion of a dedicated ISO button. For creative image manipulation in-camera, My Colors photo effects can be applied during and after shooting. A new My Category function simplifies image management by automatically tagging images with categories such as People, Scenery and Events, based on face detection and the shooting mode selected.

The camera’s movie functions include 30fps VGA recording with sound. Canon’s unique Intelligent Orientation Sensor automatically rotates vertically shot movies for playback on camera, PC or TV via the integrated AV Out connection.

LCD Enhancements The Digital IXUS 850 IS’s bright 2.5″ LCD screen features a wide viewing angle for comfortable image framing and viewing. Benefiting from a screen resolution of 207,000 pixels, users can select the Image Inspection Tool to display a magnified section next to each captured shot straight after shooting. The magnified spot can be moved between AF points or to any area of the image, allowing users to check sharpness or facial expressions before leaving the scene. A selectable 3:2 ratio overlay aids composition by displaying the printable area for standard photo prints. The user interface (UI) has also been enhanced to speed up navigation between related camera settings. For accurate framing without the LCD, the camera retains a real-image optical viewfinder– useful in difficult lighting situations or when battery power is running low.
