[Updated] Ken Rockwell - 5/22/2007 - has updated its review of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and writes, “I just bought this jewel of a pocket camera and LOVE it!” - “Buy one! I bought two! My SD700 goes everywhere with me. Remember to set the exposure compensation to -2/3 and the Vivid option to get
PCWorld - 10/16/2006 - has reviewed the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and write - “An excellent 2.5-inch LCD panel dominates the back of the camera. The image is sharp and bright, and it’s fast enough that looking at it is like watching a small television. You can choose a movie mode that captures 60 frames per second (albeit at 320-by-240 resolution), and the LCD easily keeps up. Or you can opt for 640-by-480 resolution at 30 fps. The image does get slightly grainy at full zoom–but that has no effect on captured image quality, of course.”
Digital Camera Shopper Mag - 10/9/2006 - (September 2006 issue) has reviewed the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and write - “In our tests the optical stabilizer worked like a treat, enabling much slower shutter speeds than we would normally expect to use, without having to resort to flash. Best of all though, the color contract and sharpness of images delivered by the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS was consistently dazzlingly excellent.”
Ken Rockwell - 9/13/2006 - has reviewed of the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and writes, “I just bought this jewel of a pocket camera and LOVE it!” - “Buy one! I bought two! My SD700 goes everywhere with me. Remember to set the exposure compensation to -2/3 and the Vivid option to get professional exposures and color. I tried the crazy new “my colors” options and they were less vivid than the classic Vivid option.”
DPExpert - 8/25/2006 - has posted a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and write - “The Canon Ixus 800is goes to the top of the list of pocketable digicams alongside the Sony DSC-W100. The Sony has more pixels on a bigger sensor. The Canon wins the glamour stakes. Both have optical viewfinders. The Canon has image stabilisation and costs $100 more. Both are highly recommended and whichever is chosen it will not be the wrong choice!”
Photography Blog - 8/15/2006 - has a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and writes - “Easy to use, reliable, fast in operation – and delivering pictures that, for the most part, require little if any post processing – the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / Digital IXUS 800 IS suggests itself as one of the better (perhaps even one of the best) compromises between style, features and portability. Its zoom range is better than many fashion-orientated compacts at 4x, the LCD is large and clear enough to make framing and reviewing images a stress free process, while real optical image stabilization on such a camera, if not quite perfect, is still a real plus.”
DigitalCameraReview - 07/17/2006 - has posted a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and write -
“With several trade shows to attend each year, a couple of my colleagues ended up with the SD700 IS. They don’t like to carry large cameras, but were getting increasingly disappointed with the images from their older, slim cameras that didn’t do well in low light. With the SD700 IS, they get a camera that can take excellent shots of the latest and greatest electronics in the sometimes challenging light of trade show exhibits. All while still being small enough to easily pocket and not be too noticeable.”
DPReview - 07/17/2006 - has posted a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and write - “Whereas virtually ever other Ixus/ELPH camera I’ve reviewed over the last few years has failed, in some way, to produce image quality that quite lived up to the promise of such attractive and luxurious external design and construction, the SD 700 IS really does, for the most part, deliver the goods.”
Computer Active - 07/06/2006 - has posted a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and rate it a 4 out 5 stars - “The Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS is a valiant attempt to deliver a good-looking top-end compact that comes with a full complement of useful features.”
Photoxels - 07/01/2006 - reviews the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and write -
“The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS produces very good to excellent image quality and is very enjoyable to use. Image Stabilization sweetens the already excellent features available on this camera. It is simply one of the very best ultra-compact digital camera available today, period.”
Imaging Resource - 06/30/2006 - has reviewed the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and they write - “Though it’s a pricey little camera, the 6-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS offers some great tools for improving your photos that go beyond megapixels. In particular, the camera might change how consumers think about taking low-light photos. Instead of “nuking” your subject in a flash of harsh light, turn on this camera’s Image Stabilizer and set it to one of the higher ISO light sensitivity levels and you’ll be able to take very nice, atmospheric shots with little blur.”
Canon PowerShot SD700 IS - (6.0 megapixels)
DC Resource - 06/22/2006 - thinks the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS isn’t just another ultra-compact camera and here is their verdict from a recent review - “Camera performance is very good. The camera starts up in about a second, it focuses quickly, and shutter lag was not a problem. Shot-to-shot times were impressive, as was the SD700’s low light focusing abilities. The continuous shooting mode is superb. Like on Canon’s other DIGIC II-based cameras you can keep shooting at 2 frames/second until you run out of memory — assuming you’re using a high speed SD card. While an improvement over its predecessor, the SD700’s battery life numbers are average.”
Megapixel - 06/20/2006 - has reviewed the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and rate it 9.2 for Functionality and 9.6 for Photographic Quality -
“Positives: * Excellent image quality. * Optical stabilizer. * High quality lens. * Excellent metering. * Excellent colour rendition. * Capable of long exposures. * High quality construction.”
Lets Go Digital - 06/13/2006 - has reviewed the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and they write - “To sum things up, we have nothing but praise for the top model from the Digital IXUS series: the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS. The camera features a user-friendly operation, and produces first-rate image quality. It is not a camera for the photographer with high demands looking for something compact, whilst also wanting to make choices in aperture and shutter speeds, but then again, the Canon IXUS 800 IS does not claim to be this type of camera in the first place.”
DP Interface - 06/13/2006 - has reviewed the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and they write - “The SD700 has a nice stylish body but no manual controls, no live histogram and its buttons feel cheap. So if you’ve read the entire review, you’d have noticed that the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH is a great all round compact camera with a few minor bumps here and there. If you can live with the about average image quality and scarce controls, then the SD700 IS is for you.”
Steve’s Digicams - 06/12/2006 - has a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and indicate its shutter lag, the delay between depressing the shutter button and capturing an image, was almost instantaneous. They continue to write - “The PowerShot SD700 is another outstanding member of Canon’s Digital ELPH series, offering great image quality, robust performance, and useful exposure modes, all packed in an ultra-compact, durable and stylish shell. It’s sure to make an excellent choice for any user in the market for an extremely pocketable 4x zoom, high resolution digicam. “
Cameras UK - 06/02/2006 - has posted a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS and indicate it is one of the few cameras with this length of zoom lens to offer image stabilisation. They continue to write - “The Canon SD700 IS / IXUS 800 IS gives you plenty of confidence when it comes to taking a picture. It handles most situations very well. The build quality is excellent too and I also like the design and style. They say you pay for what you get and you will certainly need to dig deeper to buy this camera than you will with other similar models.”
Digital Camera Info - 05/30/2006 - has posted a new review of the 6 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD700 IS and they write - “The mode dial indicates the presence of a manual mode on the Canon PowerShot SD700 IS, but don’t be fooled. By “manual,†this camera means control over features like white balance, ISO, and exposure compensation – not over shutter speed or aperture settings. Still, the available options are fairly extensive: a custom white balance mode that keeps colors accurate, a wide ISO range from 80-800, and a standard exposure compensation scale to easily brighten or darken the image. This PowerShot has plenty of scene modes, including a MyColors mode available in playback mode as well as recording, unlike in previous Canon models.”
Digital Camera Tracker - 5/25/2006 - Canon’s PowerShot SD700 IS carries a lot of digital camera charm. It’s a tricolor sleek camera with curvaceous lines. With more under the hood than its peers the PowerShot SD600 and SD630 it uses the same 6 megapixel sensor but the SD700 IS utilizes a longer zoom lens (4x magnification) and image stabilization.
When I pulled the SD700 IS from its box it felt very sturdy, solid (6.8 ounces) and larger than the other two models. Larger perhaps, yet still small enough to qualify it as a very cool and highly portable point-and-shoot camera. The camera just looks and feels substantial.
PC World’s Alan Stafford has taken the Canon SD700 IS for a test drive and here’s what he thinks. “After having played with it for a couple of days, I think the SD700 IS is pretty nifty. It combines moderately small size, a great LCD, image stabilization, and awesome build quality. But it’s not cheap. If you’re looking for a digital camera to suit your personal style, the SD700 IS could be the one–if your style includes dressing up and dining at jackets-required restaurants.”
All Canon PowerShot SD700 images were shot using highest quality and the camera set to auto.
We’ll be posting the full Canon PowerShot SD700 review in couple of days.
CNET - 05/03/2006 - has a new review of Canon’s 6 megapixel SD700 IS (in Europe called the IXUS 800) and has this to say. “The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS has practically everything you could want in a compact camera, though you might think the price tag a bit steep.”
