DigitalTrends has reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD1000 (IXUS 70) and they write -
“Anyone looking for a good point-and-forget digicam should put the Canon Powershot SD1000 Digital ELPH high on the list. It’s not the fastest camera in the world, but it works quickly enough, even with the flash blazing away. Photo quality is of the classic Canon style, which I like very much. I’m sure zillions of shutterbugs will like it too.”

RegHardware - 28 February’08 - reviews the Canon PowerShot SD1000 (IXUS 70) and thinks it’s not a very appealing camera to look at. Here’s a summary of their review -
“The camera simple does not offer a lot in the way of features. Of course the camera does not pretend to be anything other than a basic point-and-shoot camera. If your the kind of person who like s minimal buttons and an uncluttered camera the SD1000 might worth a look.”

Good Gear Guide reviews the Canon PowerShot SD1000 (IXUS 70) thinks because of its size it is the perfect camera to pack to parties and etc. They were impressed with its 0.07 second shutter lag and 1.2 second power up. The camera is also relatively speedy in between shots at 1.6 seconds. One of best features of the cameras was the face detection capability. The reviewer empahasized that this feature would surly be appreciated by photographers who take lots of pictures of family and friends.

Cameras.co.uk - 6/16/2007 - reviews the Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The Canon SD1000/IXUS 70 is a good quality pocket sized digital camera. Although you do need to pay a bit more for this model than other digital camera with a similar specification you will find above average picture and build quality. Well worth a close look.”

What Digital Camera Magazine - 6/12/2007 - reviews the Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The Canon IXUS 70 may seem pricey for its specification, but the design and build quality are excellent and worth every penny.”

DP Interface - 6/1/2007 - reviews the Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The SD1000’s performance is above average with features that Canon is now known for: unlimited continuous shooting mode, great movie mode (now made better) and a face detection system that works. Missing things from previous Digital ELPHs such as full exposure information and a shortcut button now exist along with added fancy features in playback.

In the end, despite some minor quirks on the Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, it still deserves my recommendation for being a very capable, very fast and really stylish ultra-compact camera. The SD1000 being loaded with features put other similarly priced competitors to shame.”

ImagingResource - 5/8/2007 - reviews the Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The Canon PowerShot SD1000 will instantly be usable for anyone already familiar with Canon compacts, and will only take a few minutes for everyone else to become quite comfortable as well. The SD1000’s feature set, which includes 10 scene modes, special color effects and control over parameters such as ISO and white balance, is enhanced by the inclusion of Canon’s latest automatic Face Detection technology. Using a no-frills approach to shooting, the SD1000 is easy to use but features that are buried deep within the menu will either go unnoticed (and unused) or provide some frustration to those who discover them by accident or via the user manual. Still the SD1000 is wonderfully simple, gorgeous to behold, and produces great images.”

DigitalCameraReview - 5/7/2007 - reviews the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “There really isn’t anything new here. Canon is the most modular of the major digicam manufacturers and their product development folks have a broad catalog of proven components (sensors, zoom lenses, LCD screens, processors, etc.) to draw from when creating new models. This impressive level of component interchangeability (modularity) allows Canon’s product development folks to create new models easily and cheaply. The SD1000 is a very good example of just how well this modular design philosophy works.”

DCRP - 4/27/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “Camera performance was superb. The SD1000 starts up in under a second, despite having a lens to extend. Focusing times are noticeably quicker than on older ELPHs, and low light focusing was accurate. Shutter lag wasn’t a problem, and shot-to-shot delays were minimal. Like all of Canon’s cameras, the SD1000’s burst mode is quite good, allowing you to keep shooting at 1.6 frames/second until your high speed memory card fills up. The SD1000 also offers support for the USB 2.0 High Speed standard. Battery life was the only weak spot here, being about 15% below average in the ultra-compact group.”

TrustedReviews - 4/23/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The Canon Digital IXUS 70 is a wonderfully stylish ultra-compact which offers lightning-quick performance, outstanding low-light ability and a useful range of features. Value for money is also surprisingly good for what is usually an expensive brand. Its picture quality isn’t perfect, but it can produce good results under difficult circumstances. For social photography and holiday snaps it will not often disappoint.”

PCmag - 4/16/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “At a list price of $299.99, this shooter is a tad pricey, too. Even so, whether I needed indoor images (with or without flash), outdoor landscape pictures, or cityscape shots, I could count on the SD1000 to hit the mark, almost always dead-on.”

DigiCamReview - 4/10/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The Canon Digital IXUS 70 / SD1000 is an excellent ultra compact digital camera - image quality is very good with great colour and detail although images are slightly soft. This camera is one of the slimmest Canon digital cameras available and is a camera that you can take anywhere and use in almost every situation. This camera has a lot of options and features which makes it a very capable and useful digital camera, one that could easily be used as a main or backup digital camera. The Canon Digital IXUS 70 is ultra-compact with a metal body, and scores highly in all of the key areas: image quality, features and price, and is therefore recommended.”

PhotographyBlog - 4-9-2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The Canon Digital IXUS 70 is a stylishly retro, well-made, responsive point-and-shoot digital camera that successfully recalls the original IXUS design and which thankfully doesn’t sacrifice substance for style. The IXUS 70 is a tiny and slim camera that both looks great and works well, with a number of innovative features on offer. On paper it doesn’t seem to offer anything different to a lot of other, cheaper cameras - 3x optical zoom lens, 7 megapixel sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen - but pick the IXUS 70 up and there is an undeniable sense of quality which exceeds most of the competition. Just as impressively, Canon have managed to include a large LCD screen and small optical viewfinder despite the tiny dimensions of the IXUS 70. Unfortunately image quality isn’t quite up to the high standards set by the rest of the camera, with image noise being the main issue.”

DigitalTrends - 4/9/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “Anyone looking for a good point-and-forget digicam should put the Canon Powershot SD1000 Digital ELPH high on the list. It’s not the fastest camera in the world, but it works quickly enough, even with the flash blazing away. Photo quality is of the classic Canon style, which I like very much. I’m sure zillions of shutterbugs will like it too.”

Steve’s Digicams - 4/6/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “Canon has created yet another appealing Digital ELPH model. I was also glad to see the return of the “classic” ELPH look, with its squared off edges. With a retail price of US$299 or less, I feel the Canon Powershot SD1000 offers a good value for a durable, 7- megapixel “ultra-compact” model. The only issues I saw with this camera was that ISO levels were higher than past models.”

GoodGearGuide - 3/21/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes, “The design is also noteworthy. Departing from the rather traditional plain silver motif seen on past models, Canon has this time decide to go for a more eye catching design, combining silver and gloss black metal, to create one of the most stylish compact cameras on the market. This is well complimented by the enormous 3in screen. A great feature that will be appreciated by many users, the screen is not only huge but of great quality, and makes framing shots so much easier. The controls are laid out in a similar way to the previous IXUS models. The five-way navigational pad is still present, and the buttons run in a line from top to bottom around it. They are a little smaller on this model, but everything is still easy to navigate and new users shouldn’t have any trouble navigating the interface.”

DPExpert - 3/16/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes’ “This is a sensible camera and praise doesn’t come any higher. It has a sensible number of pixels, optical viewfinder and degree of manual control. It will never be mistaken for a flash fashion accessory — it is a camera. It is certainly a sensible price for a camera which produces such high quality images. It is simple enough to be used by a child (we tried) and yet sophisticated enough for serious photography. Highly recommended.”

CNET - 3/14/2007 - has reviewed the 7.1 megapixel Canon (IXUS 70) SD1000 and writes’ “Despite our minor gripes, the PowerShot SD1000 is a top-notch compact camera for its price range. Most users will be pleased with its excellent image quality and the useful, if not extensive, feature set. The most significant feature you won’t find here is optical image stabilization, though at this price, you’d be hard pressed to find it elsewhere while maintaining a decent level of image quality at the same time.”
