DPExpert has reviewed the Canon Powershot A650 IS and they write -
“Once again we are dealing with what is basically a good camera, as far as design and build are concerned, with excellent features, like the optical viewfinder and the articulated LCD, which is let down by the image sensor. However, allowing for the pixel caveat, the Canon A650is can produce decent images that will take a small degree of enlargement and will look good on a monitor. Correctly exposed photos taken under even lighting – which includes the excellent flash – will satisfy most users. We would suggest that prospective buyers should look at the Canon Powershot A590is, which is $200 cheaper, with a less ambitious zoom, an 8 megapixel sensor and without the swiveling LCD.”

PopPhoto has reviewed the Canon Powershot A650 IS and they write -
“While not without its flaws, particularly high ISO image quality, shooting with the Canon A650 IS was a very pleasant experience. Its lack of RAW support and lower image quality at ISO 400 and above are redeemed by optical image stabilization which helps to keep the camera in the lower ISOs, excellent outdoor performance, a 12.1-megapixel sensor for nice quality large prints from low-ISO shots, surprisingly incredible battery life and affordability.”

GoodGearGuide - 14 February’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and thought it was one of the beefiest point-and-shoots. Here’s a summary of their review -
“This is not the camera you tuck conveniently in your pocket. On the other hand you get high resolution tons of features and a rotating LCD. Image quality was impressive with accurate colors and very little optical distortion.”

ImagingResource - 13 February’08 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and feels the camera delivers in the area that matters most, image quality. Here’s a summary of their review -
“The 650 IS performs like a champ with fast startup and shot-to-shot times. Digital noise was evident as low as ISO 80 and gets worse at 200 yet because of the cameras optics and sensor the noise is not a real problem and prints as large as 11 x 14 looked good. Optical distortion was about average for camera in this class.”

Looks like the folks at ImagingResource liked the A650 IS a lot. they were a little taken with digital noise but indicated that since most people generally don’t produce printed pictures above 8 x 10 this camera produces great looking prints and it has so many appealing features it’s a winner camera all the around.

DigitalCameraInfo - 03 December’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and notes the camera offers more features and options than other zooms in its class. Here’s an excerpt from their review conclusion -
“In terms of image quality, the A650 IS sports Canon’s traditionally excellent color and white balance accuracy. With 12 megapixels, the camera also provides great resolution, but suffers from high noise levels and poor dynamic range above ISO 100. This is typical of high-megapixel cameras; what is gained in resolution, is made up for with lots of noise.”

Cameras.co.uk - 12 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and feels the camera is one of the best digital cameras on the market. Here’s the overall verdict -
“The Canon Powershot A650 IS is a very smart digital camera. It has a good selection of features and picture quality is among the best you will find from a consumer, compact digital camera. I have really struggled to come up with any negative points about the camera. You will also find the build quality of the camera a step up from most other Powershot models. Recommended.”

ePhotozine - 03 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and offers this verdict;
“As a cheaper version of the Canon Powershot S5 IS , the A650 doesn’t offer all the same build qualities or features like the USM lens, 12x optical zoom or LCD viewfinder yet the S5 is a mere £20 more. Why the A650 is so close in price to the S5 can be anyones guess.

Without that in mind, the camera is a very capable one giving good results if you are willing to wait for them because of the start up time.

If you are wanting a camera that can do what an SLR can do but the idea of the S5 scares you, then take a look at this.”

DigitalCameraReview - 02 October’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and offers the following conclusion;
“The Canon A650 IS packs a lot of features into a reasonably priced, relatively compact digital point and shoot that Canon hails as the leader of its value-intensive A-series line. But that reasonable price has to be matched by performance, and the A650 IS delivers the goods. Good image quality and color; good shutter and flash performance; optical image stabilization; a lens focal range that goes from modestly wide to modest telephoto and the ability to add options to the camera that broaden the focal range are only a few of the nice details in Canon’s latest offering. The camera features auto functions that can have a novice taking great shots right out of the box, but also provides a full complement of manual controls for folks who wish to get more involved. It’s the lowest-priced 12MP camera in Canon’s current fleet.

When I reviewed my last A-series camera, the A570 IS, my gripes with it were that Canon had basic and advanced camera guides instead of a single guide, and the battery cover was difficult to close and felt a little flimsy. The A650 IS has a single guide, and while the battery cover is still a little difficult to close, it feels more substantial. There’s not much to dislike with the A650 IS.”

PhotoReview - 19 September’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and writes;
“Aside from some reservations we have about the body design, the A650 IS provides an excellent control suit for its price. It’s also an affordable choice for photographers who want the benefits of P, Av, Tv and M shooting modes and high resolution and would be an excellent ‘learning’ camera for prospective DSLR buyers. Ideal for family photographers and travelers, it’s worthy of consideration by any amateur photographer who wants a flexible, user-friendly digicam with good performance and a wealth of useful functions.”

Rating: ½½½½½

CNET - 18 September’07 - reviews the Canon Powershot A650 IS and writes;
“With its great picture quality and wealth of features, the Canon PowerShot A650 IS makes a great camera for amateur photographers who either don’t want to step up to a digital SLR yet, or who simply want a secondary camera alongside their SLR. Despite its performance and noise issues, the A650 IS presents a fine choice for a flexible, high-resolution, photographer-friendly camera.

The bottom line: Performance issues aside, the Canon PowerShot A650 IS combines large, good-looking photos and a generous feature set into a fine midrange shooter.”
