Bright Highlights In The Background Can Wreck Your Outdoor Digital Portrait

by DCT on May 30, 2005

Bright Highlights In The Background Can Wreck Your Outdoor Digital Portrait: Remember… light attracts, dark recedes. Your eye will be attracted to the bright areas in a photograph. They will be VERY distracting in the photo and take attention away from your subject. And while bad enough on the background, they can be disturbing to your subject.

Rays of sunlight that cause splotches on your subjects clothing and face can quickly derailed an otherwise nice outdoor portrait.

Tip:

Take the time to move your subject to avoid splotches of light on them or their clothing. And look behind your subject at the background. If there bright spots or as photographers call them, hotspots, move your subject. Hotspots cause overexposed highlights. Film is more forgiving of them than digital.
